In fact, head coach Nort Thornton believes that this season’s team has a Top 5 finish in them. “We have to integrate our new people with those who have played at the NCAA level and are aware of how it all works and what pressures there are,” Thornton said. “Right now, it’s a matter of getting everybody on the same page and building a team.” The team may feature many newcomers, but the returning swimmers are among the best from a season ago. One of the world’s greatest sprinters, Anthony Ervin, returns for his senior season. During his first three years as a Bear, Ervin has already inked his name in the

    Contact: Hillary Zaken, Director of Communications (336) 217-7057; [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE American Hebrew Academy hosts Olympic Gold Medalist Lenny Krayzelburg GREENSBORO The American Hebrew Academy is proud to host four-time Olympic Gold medalist swimmer Lenny Krayzelburg on campus on September 17, 2015 from 11:30 am-12:15 pm. Krayzelburg will tell his inspiring personal story of being a Ukrainian Jewish immigrant to the US who rose to fame as a swimmer. He is a member of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, and has held five world swimming records. After his retirement from competitive athletics, he has been involved with teaching swimming and water safety across the country. His story includes his difficulties as a new immigrant, and how he overcame adversity to fulfill his own American Dream. He will be telling his story at the American Hebrew Academy, the only international Jewish college prep boarding school in the world. At the Academy, Jewish students from all over the United States and the world study together. Over the past five years, the American Hebrew Academy has enjoyed a 25% increase in international enrollment, which has included numerous students from Russia and many other Russian speaking countries. Krayzelburg was born in Odessa in the former Soviet Union. After spending his boyhood years in what is now the Ukraine, his family immigrated to the United States to escape Soviet Jewish anti- Semitism and the call of the Soviet army, settling in Los Angeles. He is a four-time Olympic gold medalist in swimming from the 2000, and 2004 Olympic Games, the 1998 World Champion in 100m and 200m backstroke, 11-time United States National Champion, and has owned 5 world records in backstroke.

    USA TEAM: 2017 WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES August 19-30, 2017, Taipei City, Taiwan INTRODUCTION The World University Games is the American term for “Universiade,” an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival, staged every two years in a different city around the world, representing both winter and summer competitions. It is second only in importance to the Olympic Games. THE USA TEAM (see: www.wugusa.com) The 2017 Summer Games in Taipei City, Taiwan will have U.S. representation in up to 22 sports. By contrast, the 2015 American team had 600 athletes and staff in Gwangju, South Korea. The following 22 sports competitions are open for U.S. representation in Taiwan: Athletics/Track and Field Football (Soccer) Table Tennis Archery Golf Taekwondo Badminton Gymnastics (Artistic) Tennis Baseball Gymnastics (Rhythmic) Volleyball Basketball Judo Water Polo Cue Sports (Billiards) Roller Sports Weightlifting Diving Swimming Wushu Fencing AMERICAN SUCCESS AT THE WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES: The U.S.A. won a total of 54 medals at the 2015 Summer Games, finishing 5th in the world. Many now-famous athletes have represented the U.S.A. in previous WUG competitions prior to gaining stardom in the Olympics and professional sports. These include such elite athletes as Michael Johnson (Track), Charles Barkley and Larry Bird (Men’s Basketball), Matt Biondi and Michael Phelps (Swimming), and Lisa Leslie (Women’s Basketball).     Swimming and Diving DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Michigan wins fi rst championship since 1995, 12th overall: — When Michigan’s Bruno Ortiz pulled himself out of the water after swimming the anchor leg in the 400- yard freestyle relay at the 2013 Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, the singing started. “Hail to the Victors” echoed around the Indiana University Natatorium at IUPUI March 30, beginning with two Michigan spectator sections on one side of the building and carrying over to the Michigan bench area on the pool deck. The Wolverines did not win the 400 free relay; they fi nished second. But it didn’t matter. Michigan had wrapped up its fi rst national team title since 1995 long before that fi nal relay event. It was the 12th national title for Michigan, and meant it was no longer tied with Ohio State for the overall lead in Division I men’s titles. “This morning, we just kind of let our passion drive us. And that was it,” said Connor Jaeger, who began Michigan’s title drive on the fi nal night of the three-day meet with a victory in the 1,650-yard freestyle. He also won the 500 free in the meet’s fi rst individual race. Michigan’s victory halted a two-year title run by California, which fi nished second. “We started four years ago working on this,” said Michigan’s fi fth-year coach Mike Bottom. “You do it one day at a time; you do it one student-athlete at a time.
