Seahawks Sign Pair Of International Students For 2017-18 Season Staten Island, NY – (Jan. 18, 2017) Wagner first-year head women’s basketball coach Heather Jacobs has signed two highly-regarded international players, Jo- ellen How from Opunake, New Zealand and Taylah Simmons from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, each of whom are enrolled in classes at Wagner College and will compete in practices immediately before becoming eligible to play in the 2017-18 season.

How is a 5-10 guard from Opunake, New Zealand where she competed for the New Plymouth Girls’ High School which is a member of the Taranaki Sec- ondary Schools Association (TSSA). After earning New Plymouth’s MVP award in 2016, How was se- lected to compete in the 2016 New Zealand World Basketball Championships.

“Joellen has a terrific ability to read the game,” said Jacobs. “Not only can she shoot it and score but she puts her teammates in positions to be successful. She is a special player because she will not only contribute but she has the ability to make those around her better.”

Simmons is a 6-0 guard, who competed for Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College and boasts a wide and varied basketball resume. She averaged 13.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 18 games in helping to lead the Nunawading Spectres, to a semifinal appearance in the 2016 Victorian Youth Championship while earning All Star 5 recognition in the process. The Specteres have produced more Aus- tralian Olympic and World Championship players and coaches than any other program in the country.

Ten strong and committed to strengthening the conference from within, the NEC comes off the most successful year in league history in terms of athletic and academic success. Poised for a new era of growth, innovation and achievement under the leadership of Noreen Morris, the Conference will continue to build around the theme of #NECPride.

The NEC and its member institutions are committed to providing opportunities for student-athletes to achieve their fullest potential both in athletic competition and in the classroom. Likewise, the Conference continually strives to be an NCAA Division I leader for student-athlete achievement, academic excellence, integrity, sportsmanship, equity and diversity, community partnership and national engagement.

When the Northeast Conference (NEC) was first established as the ECAC-Metro Conference back in 1981, the league’s founders had one goal in mind: to create a competitive NCAA Division I men’s basketball conference for unaffiliated schools on the Eastern seaboard. A single-sport entity at its inception, the NEC has grown far beyond expectations over the past three plus decades, having transformed itself into a 10-member, 22-sport conference.

The remarkable success story of the Conference began to unfold in 1985, when the league began sponsoring additional sports. Three years later, a change of name was in order and the Northeast Conference as we know it today was born. With membership and sport sponsorship continuing to grow over the years, the NEC now enjoys qualification or play-in access to 14 different NCAA Championships (, men’s and women’s basketball, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball).

Though the NEC has featured various incarnations since its inception, charter members Fairleigh Dickinson, LIU Brooklyn, Robert Morris, St. Francis Brooklyn, Saint Francis U and Wagner remain part of the current 10-school alignment. They are joined by Mount St. Mary’s (admitted in 1989), Central Connecticut (1997), Sacred Heart (1999) and Bryant (2012). The NEC’s six-state geographic footprint includes access to such major media markets as New York City, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Hartford and Providence.

NEC member institutions now compete in 22 championship sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s bowling, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball.

The NEC has embraced new and social media to convey its message to a growing fan base. The conference has attracted a loyal following in recent years on its Twitter, Facebook and YouTube pages, and the NEC Overtime! blog continues to grow in popularity.

2016-17 NEC Women’s Basketball In the league’s 2016-17 preseason poll, Sacred Heart received six first-place votes in being named the preseason favorite, followed by Robert Morris, who received three first-place votes. Seahawks Fall 68-45 At NJIT In Season Opener

Newark, NJ – The Wagner women’s basketball team scrapped and clawed on the road against NJIT in forging a 29-29 halftime tie before the Highlanders pulled away in the second half for a 68-45 win in the season opener for both teams at the Fleisher Athletic Center.

The Seahawks, playing their first game under head coach Heather Jacobs, looked crisp and organized on both ends of the floor for long stretches of the game but were undone by a 16-0 NJIT run which bridged the third and fourth quarters.

After freshman guard Kellie Crouch (North Brunswick, NJ / North Brunswick) buried a three-pointer after receiving a kick-out pass from senior forward Taylor Butigian (Rockaway Park, NY / Christ the King) with 3:43 remaining in the third quarter, the Seahawks cut the lead down to two at 38-36 lead.

The Highlanders, however, ended the quarter on a 10-0 run before opening the final stanza with six straight points to complete the 16-0 run. By the time freshman guard Corinn Baggs (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Academy) sank a layup with 7:43 left to play, the game was out of reach as this bucket made it a 54-38 game.

The Seahawks were led by three newcomers as Crouch, junior Africa Williams (Brooklyn, NY / Banneker), a transfer from Mohawk Community College, each tossed in 10 points apiece off the bench, while freshman guard Kerstie Phills (Charlotte, NC / Charlotte

Christian) added nine. Seahawks Defeat College Of Staten Island, 62-60 For Jacobs’ First Seahawk Win

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women’s basketball team built a 17-point first half lead, saw the College of Staten Island storm back to gain a second-half lead of its own, before surviving by a 62-60 count to give head coach Heather Jacobs her first Seahawk victory tonight at the Spiro Sports Center.

The Green & White, who opened the season with a 68-45 loss at NJIT on Saturday, even their season mark at 1-1 while the Dolphins, who were playing their first game of the season, are 0-1.

23927Wagner closed the first quarter on an 11-0 run in building an 18-8 lead heading into quarter number two. Keyed by three-point jumpers from a trio of new comers, one each by freshmen guards Sydney Sabino and Kellie Crouch, and another by junior transfer Africa Williams, the Seahawks opened the second quarter on a 13-6 run in building their biggest lead of the game, at 31-14, with 3:36 to go in the half.

The Seahawks took a 36-22 lead in the locker room at intermission before the Dolphins outscored the Seahawks 20-5 in the third quarter, triggered by a 15-0 run, to trim the deficit to one, at 41-40, after the third quarter.

CSI, a Division III program whose campus is located just four miles from Wagner, opened the final stanza with an 8-2 burst, keyed by a pair of three-pointers from Anglelique Price, to take it biggest lead of the game, at 48-42, with 7:16 left. At this point, it was anyone’s ball game as the teams traded baskets the rest of the way. During a closing stretch that featured five lead changes and two ties, Wagner was able to wrest the lead for good when junior guard Tanasia Russell (Vineland, NJ / Vineland) sank two free throws with 34 seconds left to give the lead for good at 60-59.

After CSI committed a turnover underneath its own basket with 26 seconds left, the Dolphins were forced to foul Julia McClure (Secaucus, NJ / Secaucus) in the open floor with 11 seconds to go and the sophomore calmly knocked down two free throws to make it a 62-59. The Dolphins’ Jacquelyn Cali made 1-of-2 from the line with 0.7 seconds left to as the Seahawks held on by that 62-60 count.

“I think we can learn a lot from this game,” said Jacobs. “And it’s nice to be able to learn when you get the win at the end of the day.

The Seahawks were paced by sophomore guard Julia McClure (Secaucus, NJ / Secaucus), who matched her career high with 15 points, 14 points from junior guard Tanasia Russell (Vineland, NJ / Vineland), while freshman guard Kellie Crouch (North Brunswick, NJ / St. John Vianney) tallied a career-high 11.

Trailing by a 13-12 count early in the second quarter, Wagner went on an 8-0 run, keyed by consecutive three-pointers by Crouch and McClure, as the Seahawks built their biggest lead of the game at 20-13, with McClure’s trey at the 7:18 mark forcing the Bulldogs to call timeout. Yale was able to counter with a 10-4 spurt in narrowing the Seahawk lead to 24-23, heading into the locker room at halftime.

Wagner maintained the lead for most of the third quarter before Jen Berkowitz, who led all scorers with 20 points, hit a running one-hander with 53 seconds left in the period to forge the 40-40 tie through three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, Yale shot 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from the field in outscoring the Seahawks 26-12, pulling away for the 14-point win.

Women’s Basketball Drops 63-39 Decision to University of Pennyslvania

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women’s basketball team placed three players in double figures but it was not enough to offset the 17-point, 10-rebound effort from the University of Pennsylvania’s 6-3 center Michelle Nwokedi as the Quakers posted a 63-39 victory over the Seahawks at the Spiro Sports Center.

For the second straight game, the Green & White had only six players available, three of whom scored in double figures. Freshman guard Kellie Crouch (North Brunswick, NJ / St. John Vianney) led the way for Wagner with 11 points, while junior guard Tanasia Russell (Vineland, NJ / Vineland) and freshman forward Kerstie Phills (Charlotte, NC / Charlotte Christian) added 10 points apiece.

Freshman forward Corinn Baggs (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Academy) paced the Seahawks in the rebounding department with six, in addition to tallying five points, while Phills added five boards.

After taking an early 8-7 lead on a Russell jumper with 3;57 left in the first quarter, the Seahawks went cold from the field, as the Quakers went on an 18-0 run in building a 25-8 lead en route to building a 39-13 advantage at halftime.

Game 8 Army 85, Wagner 40 December 5, 2016 Christl Arena West Point, NY Seahawks Fall At Army West Point

West Point, NY – Madison Hovren recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Janae McNeal added 12 points and six assists in leading defending Patriot League champion Army West Point to its sixth consecutive win, an 85-40 decision over short-handed Wagner tonight.

For the third straight game, the Seahawks only had six players available and this lack of depth played a key role as Wagner had difficulty handling the Cadets’ smothering, full-court press, which caused 25 turnovers on the evening, leading to a 22-7 edge in points off turnovers.

Wagner was rushed into 12 first-quarter turnovers as Army built a 24-9 lead after the first session. The Cadets, who are now 4-0 vs. Northeast Conference (NEC) teams, having previously defeated LIU Brooklyn (68-47), Fairleigh Dickinson (85-58) and St. Francis Brooklyn (69-46), improve their season record to 7-1 while the Seahawks are now 1-7.

Sophomore guard Julia McClure (Secaucus, NJ / Secaucus) recorded the first double-double of her young career, leading Wagner with 14 points and 10 rebounds, both team highs, while freshman forward Kerstie Phills (Charlotte, NC / Charlotte Christian) added 11 points, seven rebounds and two steals. McClure’s 14-point effort came on 6-fo-10 shooting while Phills was 5-for-11 from the floor. Game 9 Albany 75, Wagner 50 December 10, 2016 Spiro Sports Center Staten Island, NY Albany Defeats Wagner, 75-50

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women’s basketball team received career-high scoring games from three different players and totaled a season-high 22 points in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to offset the 20-point, 14-rebound outing by Albany’s Jessica Fequiere as the America East preseason favorites came away with a 75-50 win this afternoon.

Sophomore guard Julia McClure (Secaucus, NJ / Secaucus) tossed in a career-high 16 points to lead the Seahawks, while freshmen guards Kellie Crouch (North Brunswick, NJ / St. John Vianney) and Kerstie Phills (Charlotte, NC / Charlotte Christian) added a career-high 12 points apiece.

Albany, which claimed the 2016 America East tile and knocked off Florida in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to eventual Final Four team Syracuse in round two, jumped out to a 24-9 lead after the first quarter and took a 42-15 lead at halftime. The Seahawks’ best stretch of basketball came during the fourth quarter, when they went on a 13-0 run over a span of 3:24 to trim the deficit to 61-40 with 6:23 remaining in the game. The Seahawk run was keyed by hot outside shooting as McClure knocked down a pair of three-pointers during the stretch while Phills hit another. Women’s Basketball Battles Bryant Before Falling 70-61

Smithfield, RI – Led by 20 points from freshman forward Kerstie Phills, along with 15 points and 10 rebounds from sophomore guard Julia McClure, the Wagner women’s basketball team gave Bryant a scare before falling 70-61 in a back and forth game that featured 14 ties and 22 lead-changes.

Phills matched her career high and has now scored in double figures in seven straight games and 10 of her last 11 overall. For McClure, the 15-point, 10-rebound effort marked her third double-double of the season and second in the last three games. The 5-8 McClure was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line, in addition to recording four assists and a steal. Her 15-point outing tied for the most points McClure has ever scored in an NEC game (at St. Francis Brooklyn, (2/1/16) and is one shy of the career-high 16 points she tallied vs. Albany back on December 10.

Phills was aggressive from the outset, tossing in six points to stake Wagner to a 15-14 lead after one quarter. The second quarter was nip-and-tuck and featured five ties. A pair of McClure free throws with 1:52 to go in the half gave Wagner a 29-25 lead before Bryant rallied with a 9-2 burst in taking a scant 34-31 count at the intermission. McClure led the way for the Green & White in the opening 20 minutes, totaling 13 points and eight boards, buoyed by a 6-of-6 effort from the free throw line.

The Seahawks overcame an eight-point second-half deficit in forging a 46-46 tie after regulation before the Pioneers outscored Wagner 16-4 in the extra session to pull away for the win.

Today’s effort comes on the heels of Monday’s tough 70-61 loss at Bryant (9-9, 4-3 NEC), a contest that featured 14 ties and a whopping 22 lead changes.

Wagner jumped out to an early 10-2 lead this afternoon before SHU came back to score six of the next seven points in cutting the deficit to 11-8 after one quarter before the Pioneers outscored the Seahawks, 15-11, in the second quarter in taking a slim 23-22 halftime lead.

SHU then opened the second half on a 13-6 run in opening its biggest lead of the game, at eight, a 36-28 advantage, which came on a layup by NEC Preseason Player of the Year Hannah Kimmel with 1:21 to go in the third quarter.

The Seahawks cut the deficit to 36-32 as Baggs beat the third-quarter buzzer with a layup. After SHU pulled ahead, 41-36 on a Katherine Haines jumper, Wagner answered with a 6-0 run in taking its first lead of the second half at 42-41. Baggs sparked the run with a pair of layup to make it 41-40 before Russell knocked down a 15-foot pull-up jumper to put Wagner in front by one with 5:33 left in regulation.
