  • Three Eras, Two Men, One Value: Fides in Modern Performances of Shakespeare’S
Three Eras, Two Men, One Value: Fides in Modern Performances of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra Depictions of Marc Antony and Caesar Augustus have changed dramatically between the first and twenty-first centuries, partially because of William Shakespeare’s seventeenth-century play Antony and Cleopatra. In 2006 and 2010, England’s Royal Shakespeare Company staged vastly different interpretations of this classically influenced Shakespearean text. How do the modern performances rework ancient views of Antony and Augustus, particularly in light of the ancient Roman value fides (loyalty or good faith)? This paper answers that question by examining the intersections between Greco-Roman literary-historic narratives – as received in Shakespeare’s early modern play – and the two modern performances. The contemporary versions of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra create contrasting constructions of Antony and Augustus by modernizing the characters and/or their worlds. The 2006 rendition (directed by Gregory Doran) presents an explosive but weak-willed Antony (Sir Patrick Stewart) and a prudish yet petulant Augustus (John Hopkins). On the other hand, the 2010 adaptation (directed by Michael Boyd) shows a hotheaded and frank Antony (Darrell D’Silva) who struggles against a cold and manipulative Augustus (John Mackay). Both performances reveal the complexity of these ancient figures as the men engage with and evaluate claims upon their familial, societal, and personal fides. Representations of Antony and Augustus necessarily involve fides, though classical accounts do not always feature this term. As military and political leaders, both men led lives filled with decisions about loyalty, specifically what deserved it and in what degree. The modern dramatizations further underscore fides in their portrayals of Antony and Augustus.

  • Gender and Sexuality in Adaptations of Shakespeare Organizer: Deanne Williams, York University
SAA Seminar: Gender and Sexuality in Adaptations of Shakespeare Organizer: Deanne Williams, York University. 1. The Fiendlike Queen: Recuperating the Feminine in Modern Adaptations of Macbeth William C. Carroll Boston University Terry Eagleton’s notorious comment – “To any unprejudiced reader – which would seem to exclude Shakespeare himself, his contemporary audiences and almost all literary critics – it is surely clear that positive value in Macbeth lies with the three witches. The witches are the heroines of the piece, however little the play itself recognizes the fact” (William Shakespeare, p. 2) – is just one of many attempts in recent decades to recast the witches in a more positive light, an effort that has had considerable success. Lady Macbeth has proven to be a harder case to rehabilitate, at least on the stage (as seen recently in Kate Fleetwood’s harrowing depiction with Patrick Stewart in Rupert Goold’s version). In adaptations of the past century, however, especially those written by women and those for younger readers, a very different picture of the “fiend-like queen” has emerged. These representations move far away from earlier texts in which “Lady Macbeth” is little more than a synonym for a murderous woman. Several recent works instead seek explanation or rationale for her participation in Duncan’s murder through reference to her earlier marriage and son by that marriage (both suppressed in Shakespeare’s play), to her situation as a woman in a culture of Celtic masculinity, and even to a supposed daughter (Klein) with whom Lady Macbeth (not dead in this version!) is ultimately reunited.

  • Shakespeare on Film, Video & Stage
William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. • Annual Review 2011- 2012
ANNUAL REVIEW2012 2012 was a phenomenal year for the Globe In an Olympic year packed with events throughout the capital, Globe to Globe, our contribution to the London 2012 Festival and the Cultural Olympiad, distinguished itself by its sheer scale, variety and creative ambition. It brought a huge new audience to the theatre and created a wonderfully festive multilingual showcase for Shakespeare, the Globe and London. The festival was recognised in January 2013 with a rare special award from the Critics’ Circle. Our main theatre season, which marked the triumphant return of Mark Rylance and of Original Practices to the Globe, garnered awards and achieved excellent attendance figures. But this was a big season for artistic activity beyond Bankside too, with two West End transfers, a much more extensive touring programme and international premieres of our productions on screen. All this earned us the ‘London Theatre of the Year’ award from The Stage. We are pleased to report that these achievements did nothing to compromise our educational and other activities. This was another ambitious year of teaching and public events and of developments in print and digital publishing. 2012 also brought enhancements to our exhibition and tour and saw the steady WELCOME! expansion of our retail, catering and hospitality operations. But perhaps most excitingly of all, following decades of planning and a period of intense fundraising, work began on the construction of our indoor theatre, now named the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. All this was achieved without government funding and in a climate of financial austerity. ‘ The Globe to Globe season was a one-off, once-in-a- lifetime event that changed the cultural landscape of globe to globe London theatreland in every sense for six weeks last summer.

ABSTRACT Drawing on archive material, reviews and personal observation, this thesis examines the use of visual media in stage productions of Shakespeare’s plays. Utilizing examples from the period between 1905 and 2007, the thesis focuses on intermedial productions, explores the media use in Shakespeare productions, and asks why certain Shakespeare plays seem to be more adaptable to the inclusion of visual media. Chapter one considers the technology and societal shifts affecting the theatre art and the audience and Klaus Bruhn Jensen’s three level definition of intermediality which provides a framework for the categorizing the media usage within Shakespeare productions.
