President's Prattle

IT is always in need of interesting copy. Can you write on some topic of interest to our membership? For example; what beginners need to know about bushwalking and skiing - clothes and equipment, camping techniques, first aid, trip planning, weather and the effects of its extremes, food and diet; search and rescue; equipment reviews; book reviews; history of bushwalking and skiing areas; club history and memoirs; flora, fauna. geology. prehistory, archeology other outdoor activities - mountaineering, rcckclimbng, caving, rafting, canoeing, sailing; overseas adventures; humour; and, of course walk reports and trip previews. If you have talents in other areas - for example sketching or photography (preferably black and white]. then you could enliven the appearance of IT with your art. Please give it some thought.

The committee received with regret Sally Petherbridge's resignation as Social Secretary. Sally will be studying law part-time this year. We wish her success and thank her for making our monthly meetings so enjoyable. We welcome June Hornby to the committee as Social Secretary for the remainder of its term Do give her your support by coming to our convivial meetings.

When you book for a trip please be reasonably sure that you can go. If you withdraw after transport arrangements have been made then the rest of the party bear the cost of your empty seat as it is most difficult to reorganise transport. Also, if the trip limit was reached, someone else might have been prevented from going. If you are uncertain that you can go on a trip but would still like to book then leaders may be prepared to accept your booking on an "if a place is available" basis.

Finally a news item; David Campbell was interviewed on a Nowra radio station on the Monolith Valley Project. Happy walking until next month. Anton Cook 2 Bushwolking Nomograms Question I: How long will it take to walk 3 km through open bush including a climb of 200 m and a descent of 100 in? Question 2: A party of 14, travelling in 4 cars does a round trip of 350 km. How much does each passenger contribute and what is each driver reimbursed according to the Club transport formula. If mental arithmetic is something you would rather leave at home when bushwalking then nomograms could be just the thing for you. With a nomogram in your map case and a straight edge - say the edge of a compass - you can answer problems like those above in much the same way as plotting a bearing on a map. Here are two examples. 1.. Predicting Walking Time At the end of last century a 'rule' attributed to Naismith attempted to predict walking time. Since then there have been many attempts to improve it. An excellent publication "Bushwalking and Mountaincraft Leadership" (Dept. of Sport and Recreation. Victoria. 2nd ed.) gives a rule, similar to Naismith's for Australian conditions. For an average walker with a medium pack, allow one hour for every S km of easy going, every 3 km of easy scrambling, and 1.5 km of extremely rough country, deep sand, soft snow, or thick bush, plus one hour for every 600 m up, and 1 hour for every 1000 in down. For very fit and experienced walkers reduce the time by one third. Use of the nomogram for predicting walking time is best understood by studying the example. This nomogram is reproduced by kind permission of its author - Phil Waring of the FVWC. 2. Transport Costs Club transport costs are calcul'ated thus: The cost of the trip is: round trip distance (kin) x $0.20 x number of cars The cost per passenger is the cost of the trip divided by the total number in the party. Each driver receives an equal share of the total passenger contributions irrespective of the number of passengers carried by the driver. Leaders may vary the formula to take account of special circumstances - bad roads, extra distance for car shuffles, unusually large vehicle capacity. To use the transport nomogram draw a line joining the number in the party with the number of vehicles. The point where this line cuts the reference line is called the pivot point. Draw a line from the round trip distance through the pivot point to the passenger cost scale. Read off the driver reimbursement and the passenger cost. Anton Cook Concerning Conservation South East Forests

The Club meeting of 16 February voted to donate $500 to the Australian Conservation Foundation for use in the campaign to save the South East forests and to promote sustainable forestry. The donation is to be used specifically for lobbying of politicians and publicity at the federal level. To maximise the symbolic value of our Club donation, letters have been written to Federal ministers including the Prime Minister about our concern for the future of wilderness values and wildlife habitat in the wake of the decision to renew the Harris Daishowa woodchip export licence, and asking that the Government promote sustainable forestry. A Club presence will be maintained during the delivery of the material in the form of our hard-working president. Anton Cook, and David King. In fact. I understand they will be flying into the Valley rather than walking up - which hardly fits the image of a hard working president of a walking club known for its tiger walkers. For your information. Julie Andrew, who as Conservation Officer in 1987-88. was instrumental in getting the Monolith Valley Project started, and Margaret Cole. whose cooking you will enjoy on the work weekends, have joined me on the Project sub-committee. They have both informed me they wish to handle all and any complaints. I hope to se you at the work weekends - David Campbell 5 mflpr pwr-flf-i

The February monthly gathering saw us back in the Dickson Library after the traditional summer barbecues. Two speakers spoke and showed us excellent slides of Jervis Bay both above and below water. The latter showed an aspect of the flora and fauna often overlooked by terrestrial creatures such as bushwalkers. Both speakers stressed the fragile and sensitive nature of this almost unspoiled area and it became apparent that a major naval facility would be very damaging the its environment. The March meeting will feature slides and a talk by John Baiderson of his recent trek through the Nepalese Himalayas. The area covered will be west from Pokhara towards Dhorpatan, a comparatively remote part. John is a very good photographer so the slides will be well worth seeing.

The April meeting will see the return of a regular event - the Club auction. So get out that unwanted bushwalking and skiing gear and bring it along. It might make you a few dollars as well as making more space in your cupboards. Vance Brown Proposal for a By-law I wish to move that the following be adopted as a Club by-law: "Smoking is unacceptable behaviour on Club trips except where the smoker moves away at least 100 m from non-smokers and does not leave cigarette butts in the bush' Rene Lays (23 February 89) On Culinary and @ther f/Tatters In the last edition of IT you may have noticed an article on the delights of liloing down the Kowmung . While it was an excellent report of the trip concerned. I feel it may have left readers confused as to the .identity and origin of the so-called "gourmet group". It is thus my duty to enlighten Club members as to the recent activities of a breakaway group who are tired of vesta situations and feel the need, for a little more indulgence at the end of a long day's walking. The first culinary foray of this group began with a 3 day trip down the over the New Year period. A walk of massive proportions was planned, the campsite being a whole 2 km from the cars. Given the size of Carolyn and Ian's pack however, this was not a frivolous undertaking. These people were down here for some serious eating!! And what a meal it was. The crowning glories would have to be the meat and seafood kebabs. chill potatoes, spiced olive and Kate's superb pudding. Seven bottles of champagne, about eight litres of wine plus some other spirits kept us going through the night. Despite miserable weather and a hasty retreat up a ridge due to the rapidly rising river, more delights were to come. The cheese chapatis and fresh tropical salad were particularly memorable. The Kowmung was our next major undertaking. The "Gourmet Group" (see last edition of IT), consisting of four of the original gourmets, was still able to provide itself with enough food to survive on. This was despite the steepness of the climb down to the river and the stress induced by having to choose whether to have the Brie or the Camembert for lunch on the first day!! Due to a misunderstanding about who was bringing what wine (resulting in extra bottles being brought), more stress was involved in deciding the order of wines to have at dinner. You will be happy to know that we settled on a satisfactory solution in the end - the white wine with entree (bhuja). red with dinner (stir fried vegetables with pasta and an exotic sauce, champagne with dessert (David's infamous steamed pudding, of course!) and port to accompany the marshmallows. Before this stage was reached Greg Ellis was heard to cry "no more, no more - I've had enough!!" (or was it just "I feel sick"?!!). Wish I had a tape record with me. Despite the lack of numbers on the Bunberry-Tuross trip (only two of the original gourmets made it) we were able to keep up the tradition. Much to Sandy's amazement, gin and tonics were produced as pre-dinner drinks, while croissants made and appearance at breakfast. Of course there were the mandatory exotic accompaniments for lunch. Ettrema was to be a fitting follow-on. Despite their packs being much lighter. Carolyn and Ian were able to pull out the makings of a couple of wonderful curries, while the rest of us provided such essentials as papadums, rice. chutneys, more curry. yoghurt and cucumber and, of course, plenty of alcohol. David's gin and tonics made another appearance, and a nasty encounter was had with a cask of Golden Gate chianti - okay after the first sip or two, but boy does it get worse as the night goes on!! Csorry Sandy). Well, having started a great tradition I'm sure there will be plenty of incentives to carry it on. So all you rice and lentil bushwalkers - beware of bulging packs and fellow walkers who go into hysterics at the thought of having anything but a nicely mellowed red with the al dente pasta and cream saucefl! Februar4 4-5th - Tumut Canoe Trip I had seen this trip advertised twice before and this time come hell (and) or high water I was going to be on it! John Kyatt could not make it this time so in an indirect way I became the organiser. Saturday lOam saw us at the Tumut Bridge being instructed by boat hirer, coach and friend Richard Valler. There was Caroline and June is a Canadian as were Dennis and Geoff. and Michael and Heather who were in an enclosed Canadian. In single kayaks were Phil. Mark and myself. Our canoeing experience ranged from raw beginners to reasonable regulars. Richard coaxed each Canadian across the river to the eddy giving instruction and encouragement. Heather and Michael were the first to test the waters but were back in the canoe very fast as the water was a little chilly. We were shown how to operate the canoes and after an hour Richard left us. The river was very fast and the shores, most of the time, were masses of willow trees. For some time most of us were too busy trying to keep upright to observe the beautiful river bank and mountains. Any discussion to stop for lunch had to be made upsteam at least 3 km, in order to find a large enough back eddy. When we did decide to pull up the tail enders called out the Caroline and June were missing. Next thing the upside down Canadian floated by, plus two gear canisters. Caroline and June were, running along the river bank. paddle in hand. I was already out on the other bank so decided to get back into the kayak and try to rescue the gear. I got caught up in the willows and got tipped out. I hung on to the paddle and kayak for a most uncomfortable period of time. The water was cold. I field tested a brand new water camera (successfully) while I was there. With willows closing in around me a was glad of the vest and cycle helmet. Eventually I was able to get out of the current and the river and empty the kayak. I again went back to retrieve the canisters and successfully managed to get back on land. The others caught up with me and we had a peaceful lunch. Well almost, a farmer came and asked us to leave his property. We did. The afternoon was beautifully sunny and we were able to enjoy the views including the poplar plantation (used for match sticks, paddle pop stick and coffee stirrers!!). Caroline and June decided it was time for a little more excitement on one of the many bends. The only trouble was June found a very large patch of blackberries and her legs were very badly scratched. Phil went to help and the rest of us managed to stay upright although Geoff and Dennis just managed to escape a semi-submerged tree by madly paddling around the obstacle. By about 5pm most of us were feeling very tired. Phil and I, who had done a car shuffle to Bringley Bridge, kept saying that the camp must be around the next corner - or the next - or the next. Caroline and June went overboard again. The Canadian had a mind of its own in the current. The girls walked to camp. The rest of us paddled. It had got stuck and was held fast by the current Evntual1y we pushed it into the current and we followed it home. Mark. Geoff and Doug were able to pull it out of the current and onto the shore just as June, Caroline. Michael and Heather came into camp. Michael and Heather had broken their canoe and lost their car keys and clothing. While trying to rescue his gear Michael had been bitten by an ant in the eye. Come 7pm we were all together at camp so Phil drove Michael. Heather and I back to Tumut Michael and Heather went to the police to contact the NRMA to open their vehicle; Phil went into town to buy some food and I drove out to Richard to ask him to pick up the canoes from Bringley Bridge on Sunday morning instead of Gundagai on Sunday afternoon.

That night we had a late meal but at least we were all together, dry and safe. Who ever said canoeing was a quiet sport)i Rene Lays

April (7)0-9th - Honejmoon B8M - S/E

Honeymoon bay is a tiny, almost completely enclosed bay approximately half way down the western side of the Beecroft Peninsula, which forms the northern retaining arm of Jervis Bay. In fair weather it is an idyllic spot. It is surrounded by a pleasant bush camping area, marred only by the sky blue hues of the Porta-loos and rubbish receptacles [perhaps we could volunteer to remedy this during the weekend?), and rather large numbers of campers at peak holiday times (we should have the place largely to ourselves in April however). There is no fresh water on the site and no shops within 7-8 km so we need to take everything essential with us (except our spades). Camping charges are $6 per tent per night plus $1 per occupant. - We propose to charter a 16 seater minibus (or buses if required) for the trip. The cost works out at only $20-E6 per person, the socialising opportunities en route are almost unlimited!, it makes for easy carriage of tents, water and supplies - and it is environmentally responsible. That does not exclude additional car parties of course, if preferred or necessary. We plan to leave Canberra by 6pm on the Friday (7th April). which, with a meal stop along the way, will mean an arrival time of about 11pm. The range of things to do while we are there is considerable, including: (1) Easy walks to Target Bay to the south with its delightful and prisiate beaches (about 4 km return) or, via the 2 km Long Beach, north to Green Point (about 10 km return). Both of these walks could be combined with swimming and exploring the coastline and remnant pockets of rain forest. (3) Longer and much more strenuous walks around the rugged coastline and over heavily vegetated headlands beyond. Target Bay to Point Perpendicular (about 15 km return) or even to Beecroft Hill on the ocean side of the peninsula and beyond (20 km or more). Snorkeling along the 2 km reef immediately south of Honeymoon Bay. A night-time spotlighting walk to Target Bay. (6) Exploring the north-eastern tip of the peninsula by car or on foot. (6) Simply lazing around Honeymoon Bay and its immediate surrounds. The relevant map, by the way, is Currarang 9027-1-N in the 1:25000 series. Saturday night will be a communal feast and libation, to which we have invited the local ranger and his wife. Booking please to John Franklin (992567) or Margaret Cole (886947), before Easter please.
