Samuel Kilderbee Appointed Rector 1784

Samuel was born in 1759 to parents Rev Samuel and Mary (nee Wayth) Kilderbee (portraits below) who lived at Great (then known as North) Glemham House and Samuel inherited this property. The elder Samuel was one of Gainsborough’s patrons and they were close friends.

He married Caroline Waddington, a widow and daughter of Samuel Horsey and they had at least one son, Spencer Horsey 1790 – 1860 and he adopted the name of De Horsey in 1832. At the same time as being Rector of Samuel was also Rector of , but he left most of the work there to his curate.

Samuel did much alteration work to the Church and his mark can be seen on the weathervane which is inscribed ‘S.K. 1789’.

He was also a magistrate as evidenced by the following record:

SUFFOLK to wit: The Order of the Reverend William Brown and the Reverend Samuel Kilderbee two of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace in and for the said County, one whereof is of the Quorum, and both residing next unto the limits of the parish church of Marlesford in the said county, made the second day of November in the Year of our Lord One Thousand eight Hundred and fifteen concerning a male bastard Child lately born in the parish of Marlesford aforesaid of the body of Mary Hatcher single woman. Whereas it hath appeared unto us the said Justices, as well upon the compliant of the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Marlesford in the said County as upon the oath of Mary Hatcher single woman, that the said Mary Hatcher on the twenty third day of now last past, was delivered a male bastard Child in the said Parish of Marlesford And that the said male bastard Child is likely to become chargeable to the said Parish of Marlesford and thereby to the Guardians of the poor within the Hundreds of Loes and Wilford in the said county of , and further that John Townrow of in the said county, labourer did beget the said Bastard Child on the body of her the said Mary Hatcher and whereas the said John Townrow hath this day appeared before us, the said Justices, but hath not shown any sufficient cause why he shall not be adjudged to be the reputed Father of the said bastard Child. We, therefore, upon examination of the cause and circumstances of the premises, as well upon the oath of the said Mary Hatcher as otherwise, do hereby adjudge him the said John Townrow to be the reputed Father of the said bastard Child; and we do also adjudge that the said bastard child was born in the said parish of Marlesford. And thereupon we do order, as well for the better of the said Parish of Marlesford as for the sustentation and relief of the said bastard Child, that the said John Townrow shall and do forthwith upon Notice of this our Order, pay or cause to be paid to the said Hundreds and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Marlesford or to some or one of them, the sum of eight shillings for and towards the lying in of the said and the Maintainance of the said Bastard Child to the Time of making this our Order; and also the further sum for the expenses attending the taking and apprehending of the said for the cost of this our order of filiation. And we do also hereby further order that the said John Townrow shall likewise pay or cause to be paid to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Marlesford for the time being, the sum of one shilling and sixpence weekly and every week from this present time, for and towards the keeping, sustentation and maintenance of the said bastard Child, for and during so long time as the said bastard Child shall be chargeable to the Parish of Marlesford and thereby to the said Guardians of the poor within the said Hundred. And we do further order, that the said Mary Hatcher shall also pay or cause to be paid to the said Churchwardens and Overseers of the poor of the Parish of Marlesford for the time being, the sum of sixpence weekly and every week, so long as the said bastard Child shall be chargeable to the Parish of Marlesford, in case she shall not nurse and take care of the said Child herself.
