The Impact of Prize Money on Marathon Performance and Acclaim
THE IMPACT OF PRIZE MONEY ON MARATHON PERFORMANCE AND ACCLAIM A THESIS Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Economics and Business The Colorado College In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Arts By Colbert Heathcott March 2015 THE IMPACT OF PRIZE MONEY ON MARATHON PERFORMANCE AND ACCLAIM Colbert Heathcott March 2015 Economics Abstract In the past century, marathon running has become a major phenomenon in society. As a result, race participation and frequency have increased in the United States over the past decade. With the increased growth of the sport, the amount of money and the overall economic impact of races have risen, causing event organizers and sponsors to face decisions involving race awards and funding. Using an OLS regression model, this study examines the impact of prize money on marathon performance and acclaim. Results reveal marathon running to be exempt from incentive theory, as athletes do not perform better as a result of increases in winning prize money. Prize money also has no significant impact on the popularity of marathon events. Other factors, such as marathon location and history, significantly affect the acclaim of a marathon event. A thorough understanding on the impact of prize money is necessary for the future of the growing sport of marathon running. KEYWORDS: (Marathon, Incentive, Sports Marketing) ON MY HONOR, I HAVE NEITHER GIVEN NOR RECEIVED UNAUTHORIZED AID ON THIS THESIS Colbert Heathcott Signature Acknowledgments I would like to thank Dr. Judy Laux for advising me throughout the process of this research. Palabras clave: género, competición popular, participación, desigualdad, fondo Abstract Gender Inequality in Popular Long-Distance Events The social factors influencing participation in sports competitions are not equal and they do not influence men and women in the same way. -

Updated 2019 Completemedia
April 15, 2019 Dear Members of the Media, On behalf of the Boston Athletic Association, principal sponsor John Hancock, and all of our sponsors and supporters, we welcome you to the City of Boston and the 123rd running of the Boston Marathon. As the oldest annually contested marathon in the world, the Boston Marathon represents more than a 26.2-mile footrace. The roads from Hopkinton to Boston have served as a beacon for well over a century, bringing those from all backgrounds together to celebrate the pursuit of athletic excellence. From our early beginnings in 1897 through this year’s 123rd running, the Boston Marathon has been an annual tradition that is on full display every April near and far. We hope that all will be able to savor the spirit of the Boston Marathon, regardless whether you are an athlete or volunteer, spectator or member of the media. Race week will surely not disappoint. The race towards Boylston Street will continue to showcase some of the world’s best athletes. Fronting the charge on Marathon Monday will be a quartet of defending champions who persevered through some of the harshest weather conditions in race history twelve months ago. Desiree Linden, the determined and resilient American who snapped a 33-year USA winless streak in the women’s open division, returns with hopes of keeping her crown. Linden has said that last year’s race was the culmination of more than a decade of trying to tame the beast of Boston – a race course that rewards those who are both patient and daring. -

The Women's Marathon Movement
The Women’s Marathon Movement Or, we’ve run a long way, but haven’t we been here before? BY JACQUELINE HANSEN rom the onset, women distance runners have had to forge their own way, not only Fwith very little official support but, in fact, against a great deal of institutionalized resistance. Imagine the loneliness of the long- distance runner—especially female—back in 1918, when Marie Louise Ledru competed in a marathon in France. Or in 1926, when Violet Percy of England clocked 3:40:22. And in 1951, when a “mystery woman in red” from Canada was reported to have competed in the Boston Marathon. A milestone was reached in 1957 with the formation of the Road Runners Club of CourtesyHansen of Jacqueline America (RRCA), a group that vowed to ▲ Jacqueline Hansen participates in give women equal recognition. In the 1960s, an attitude echoing that of the ’30s still prevailed, with this country’s coaches concerned over the effect of running on a woman’s “feminin- ity” and her childbearing capabilities. Despite the unfavorable climate of opinion, a few women dared to be different. Lyn Carman and Merry Lepper had been training for and running in road races for some time when, in 1963, they jumped into the Western Hemisphere Marathon in 60 l MARATHON & BEYOND l Jan/Feb 2012 Culver City, California. -
Moving Past Foot Woes, Clearing Path to Games
Moving Past Foot Woes, Clearing Path to Games By FRANK LITSKY Published: March 13, 2008 Shalane Flanagan ran the 5,000 meters in the 2004 Olympics in Athens and the 2005 world championships in Helsinki. But her left foot hurt so badly in 2005 she could hardly train, and after Helsinki she decided not to run again until she found what was wrong. She went from doctor to doctor, looking for an answer. Itsuo Inouye/Associated Press Shalane Flanagan set a U.S. indoor record for 3,000 meters after a foot operation. Doctor No. 1 said the foot was fractured and there was no quick cure. Doctor No. 2 said there was an avulsion fracture, in which a bone fragment tears away. No immediate solution. Doctor No. 3 said there was a calcium deposit. No quick panacea. There were Doctors 4, 5 and 6 — maybe more, she said — but no relief. Finally, in April 2006, a breakthrough occurred. Dr. Amol Saxena, a podiatric surgeon in Palo Alto, Calif., said that Flanagan’s tendon appeared to be tearing, and he was about to operate. Minutes before, he took a standing X-ray and found the answer. She had an extra bone in the foot. He operated, removed the bone, repaired a torn tendon under the big toe and implanted a screw to hold everything together. After three months of rehabilitation, including hours in the swimming pool, Flanagan was running again on the roads. In February 2007, in her first race in 17 months, she set an American record of 8 minutes 33.25 seconds for 3,000 meters indoors. -
