Season 2019/2020 young cricketers that still have a few seasons in Under 13s JOEYS CRICKET ahead of them. Joeys fielded two teams in the Under 11s competition PREMIERSHIPS with the U11 White team finishing 4th and winning the Qualifying final before the season was cut short. The U11 Red team continued to improve finishing the season just 1968 - 2020 outside the top four, in 5th position. In the Under 11s Non- Comp we had one team of young cricketers developing their skills and having a ball in the process. 1972/73 10a 2002/03 12b Again, this season we had players participating in the 1973/74 10a 2006/07 12c Blasters programme; the Junior Blasters continued on a 1977/78 12c 2007/08 12c Monday afternoon with Mortdale Heights and ICC coming together with Joeys on the lush Gannon’s Park surface. 1980/81 10b 2008/09 10c We also had players involved in the Master Blasters 1981/82 10a 2009/10 12b sessions at Renown Park. This is my seventh or eighth cricket report for the club and CRICKET COORDINATOR’S it will be my last. St Joseph’s Riverwood Sports club has been a big part of my life on and off for the past 41 years REPORT (I started playing for the club at age 4). I have enjoyed it immensely, but it is time to move on. I would like to Season 2019/20 was filled with challenges, but in especially thank my wife Melinda, as I am writing this hindsight I believe we should be thankful we only missed report (on Mother’s Day) she is putting together the a couple of games at the end of the season. season presentation booklet, as she has done for many years along with rego forms and MyCricket duties. This was the Clubs 52nd season and I am very proud to say we secured our 21st Mick Finn Premiership, with the 13A team winning this trophy for the 4th time in consecutive seasons. The 13As finished 25 points clear of second place in the Minor- Premiership race and were declared Premiers with the season being cut short.

Our two 13B teams finished 2nd and 4th at the end of the regular season. The 13B Red team did particularly well considering they were low on numbers on many occasions. The 13B Blue team finished 4th a good achievement considering we had several new players to the club in this team, including this season’s Kurtis Paterson Player of the Year Will Baton. Our 13C team also made the finals finishing 4th. This team is filled with

U13A - PREMIERS Tom Parawa. Set the tone at the top of the order and behind the stumps. Opening the batting he was positive, laying a solid foundation and was invaluable with the gloves.

Nick Puckeridge. Valuable senior player of the team, Pucko developed his bowling and showed great pace and guile with outswing, taking many important wickets.

Jack Roberts. A new member of the club with school commitments seeing only play a few games, the highlight was the opening game half century, “great knock!”.

Harry Salmon. The wicket taker. Harry was the go-to bowler when we needed a wicket and he delivered, taking out the bowling award fort the team.

Christian Sinagoga. Our mild-mannered fast bowler, Coming into the season I knew we formed a talented Christian terrorised many opposition batters with the ball group of players, but talent alone doesn’t win and his pinch hitting was great to watch. premierships. In most games I asked the team knowledge and experience played a role in the team’s at the innings break “who would you rather be” many success, solid at the top of the order and crafty with the times the answer was “The opposition” but on all but one ball seeing Fin have a blinder in the semi-final. occasion we turned it around and won games we had no Mick Finn right to win. Evidence of this is when you look at the season ladder. We finished on top of the table 25 points clear of second, when it came quotient, we finished second. We had the rare ability to turn it on at the pressure moments and that’s what a great team does.

Marcus Buckley. Developed into a great opening bowler, often taking an early breakthrough wicket. Great team player, always playing with a smile on his face.

Lucy Finn. Did a great job as Captain and was dominant with the bat, winning the Batting award for the team. She set a great example for the younger players to follow.

Martis Ram Johri. Performed exceptionally well with the bat and the ball winning the team Allrounder award. Martis put a high price on his wicket and claimed many victims with his off spin.

Austin McDean. When Austin is on with the bat it’s a joy to watch, he played many special innings this season including a half century. Very handy with the ball.

Oscar O’Neill. Only played a few games due to school commitments but still can claim a Joeys premiership after 13A’s Premiership Souvenir bats many seasons with the club.

Ronan O’Neill. Ro bowls his leggies beyond his years, making batters look all at sea. He played a big role defending our total making the opposition work very hard for their runs.

U13B BLUE

The boys conducted themselves with honour and distinction throughout the season. Despite many of them not playing with each other before, they bonded together as a team quickly and easily. Will Baiton bamboozled most batsmen all season with his leg spin, dominated with the bat and reached his highest ever score on 63 n.o. James Butler improved his bowling tremendously this season and reached double figures for the first time while batting against South Hurstville. Thomas Deuis was solid in the bowling attack week-by- week and bettered his highest batting score twice through the season and always pushed for a run.

Luke Hill was incredible with the ball in his hand, taking his wickets at 4 apiece and when he got going with bat the runs flowed, most memorable was his run-a-ball 75 against Kingsgrove. Arko Mookherjee was outstanding as the opening bowler, capturing the most wickets for the season. Not one to block out an over, his batting was always entertaining. Lincoln See swung the bat hard, and when it came off it was very effective, ending the season as the second- highest run-getter. He was often ferocious with the ball and deserved better returns in the wicket column. This was Ethan Simons first season with a leather ball, and he improved enormously. He was solid behind the stumps, has the promise of great timing with the bat and despite what the bowling statistics say, was one of the biggest improvers with his bowling for the season. “c. Williams.T, b. Williams.M” the Williams brothers, Thomas and Michael combined on six occasions through the season to effect a wicket. Thomas bagged 15 catches (4 in one match!) for the season while Michael snaffled eight himself. Thomas returned a solid batting average of 20 while Michael reached double figures batting for the first time, reaching 21 n.o. in a memorable 66 run stand with Will Baiton. The team well-deserved their spot in the semi-final having won their last four matches in convincing fashion to end the season. Well done, boys.

U13B RED Leo Matthews: Leo did a great job opening the batting and was our 3rd highest run scorer (194 at 24.25), getting It was a very pleasing year for the boys ending up a well- us off to a stable start and a few runs in the bank. Leo deserved second place on the ladder. In the run home we troubled the batsmen with his spin bowling and was beat every team except the ultimate winners in generally very economic. In the end he was unlucky not Penshurst. I think second place on the ladder was a fair to have taken a handful more wickets but that is often a reflection of the team’s standing in the competition. Well spinner’s lot. done boys. Will McMahon: Will was the star of our batting line up, top scoring with 314 runs at an average of 34.9 and a top score of 64 . Will could bully an attack and learnt to keep his head if wickets fell around him, developing his maturity. Will is a skilled sportsman: handy with bat & ball and in the field (8 catches). Darcy Matthews: Darcy was our second highest run getter (267 at an average of 29.7) and if he learns how not to get run out will score many more runs in the years to come. He combined well with Will M and Zac on many occasions to put on some much-needed partnerships. Darcy is a handy bowler and fielder, performing well throughout the season. The Joeys White side had a solid first season in the Frankie Weeding: Frankie led our bowling attack taking under 13's, with 3 new additions to our under 11 side 20 wickets at an average of 7.2 and a best of 3-3. It wasn’t from last year. Justin Matthews Our three 12-year old’s did a great job leading the

younger boys throughout the season. Justin and Byron shared the wicket keeping duties and had some solid innings together with the bat. As one half of our left arm opening bowling partnership, Luke B had a great season with bat and ball, picking up his first hat-trick along with his first 50.

Mathew had another successful season, picking up some key wickets and continued to show potential with the bat. As always Axel rarely failed to snare a wicket or form a partnership when needed most. Noah continues to improve both his bowling and batting and snared a few wickets for us with his catching and ability to throw down the stumps.

Charlie was a welcome addition to our team this year, hard work and determination paying off with a huge improvement in his all-round game by the end of the season.

Our two 8-year old’s, Tommy and Luke, showed great potential, both snaring wickets with the ball and improving their batting against some much older competition.

Thank you for another great season boys and all the best for the next one.

U11 WHITE aspect of the game, a great pair of hands, clean bowling out batters at timely points in the game and some good technique with the bat. Isabelle worked hard on her game at training and achieved great results. Taking wickets and scoring runs week in week out, keeping her team in the game and encouraging us with her resolve when challenges presented.

Young Angelo showed plenty of courage always filling in where needed and taking up the wicket keeping for his team. His wicket keeping skills saved us plenty of runs and allowed our fast bowlers to unleash. His batting got better each game and developed his bowling.

Fast and menacing with the ball and equally as devastating with the bat, showing plenty of skill throughout the year including a hat –trick and great batting in any conditions.

What a season by the boys. We had Cadel, Jye and Nick returning for another season, we welcomed Tom who had played previously with another club, and 4 newbies in Joel, Lachlan, Marc and Sebastian.

The year started slowly with the boys needing to learn and adapt to new skills and challenges required to make the season enjoyable and successful.

By round four something clicked with the boys and week in week out the enthusiasm, dedication and improvement from them all was incredible. The commitment and enjoyment shown at training led to the boys every week turning up with the belief and confidence required to compete against all teams at different levels.

The games that stood out for me throughout the season were against the top three teams.

1. Ramsgate Gold who were undefeated the whole The Season 2019-20 was another fantastic and season – While we didn’t win the game, the game memorable one for all players and parents! KIARNA- A great first season as Kiarna developed her skills in both batting and bowling. Her enthusiasm and energy was infectious on the field and I can still hear the 'crack' off the bat when she started to find her groove and play some lovely shots. A lightning fast runner between the wickets gained so many extra runs for the team over the year. SEBASTIEN- 2019-2020 was the year of Seb!
