Dimensions of Citizenship: Architecture and Belonging from the Body to the Cosmos For Immediate Release Photos from Venice Biennale HERE DIMENSIONS OF CITIZENSHIP: ARCHITECTURE AND BELONGING FROM THE BODY TO THE COSMOS TO BE PRESENTED IN THE U.S. AT WRIGHTWOOD 659, CHICAGO DIRECT FROM VENICE 16TH ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE Seven projects explore how architecture can respond to the complex meanings of citizenship today; on view February 15 ‐ April 27, 2019 (CHICAGO, IL — December 4, 2018) — Dimensions of Citizenship: Architecture and Belonging from the Body to the Cosmos, the official U.S. entry at the recently‐concluded 16th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, will be on view for the first time in the United States at Wrightwood 659, a new art space located at 659 W. Wrightwood Avenue in Chicago, from February 15 through April 27, 2019. Devoted to exploring the notion of citizenship today and the potential role of architecture and design in creating spaces for it, Dimensions of Citizenship comprises seven unique installations, each created by a transdisciplinary team of architects and designers. Commissioned by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and The University of Chicago (UChicago) on behalf of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the U.S. presentation of Dimensions of Citizenship on view at Wrightwood 659 in Chicago is made possible by Alphawood Foundation Chicago. The exhibition will be accompanied by a range of public programs exploring citizenship and belonging, including talks, performances, workshops, and engagement with local partners (to be announced shortly). Lisa Cavanaugh, Director, Wrightwood 659 notes, “Dimensions of Citizenship eloquently embodies Wrightwood 659’s dual focus: on architecture and on art that engages with the pressing issues of our day. It would be difficult to think of a more urgent and timely issue than what it means to be a citizen. We hope that this exhibition will provoke visitors to think about multiple aspects of citizenship and how architects, designers, and artists might respond to them. We are grateful to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and The University of Chicago for enabling us to present this important exhibition.” Exhibition curators are: Niall Atkinson, Associate Professor in the Department of Art History and the College at The University of Chicago; Ann Lui, Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Mimi Zeiger, independent critic, editor, curator, and educator; and associate curator Iker Gil, lecturer in the Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects at SAIC. To create Dimensions of Citizenship, the curators asked each of the seven transdisciplinary teams to consider what it means to be a citizen today, when conventional notions of citizenship are being simultaneously questioned and expanded. The teams are: Amanda Williams + Andres L. Hernandez, in collaboration with Shani Crowe; Studio Gang; SCAPE; Estudio Teddy Cruz + Fonna Forman; Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Laura Kurgan, Robert Gerard Pietrusko with Columbia Center for Spatial Research; Keller Easterling with MANY; and Design Earth. Each of the works in Dimensions of Citizenship grapples with the potential meanings and architectural implications of citizenship at a different scale: from a project focused on the Citizen, to an exploration of Civitas, with its implications of shared purpose and responsibility, through Region, Nation, Globe, Network, and, finally, Cosmos. The resulting works use design to address a diversity of issues, including the meaning of “home,” the right to public space, the uses of civic monuments, the dynamics of borderlands, and the conditions of global migration, among others. What is ultimately revealed is the need for architecture and design to respond to and shape spaces of citizenship at all scales, today and in the future. (See below for brief descriptions of the seven installations.) A suite of film and video works in the “Transit Screening Lounge” will look at the migratory flows, blurry edges, and transgressive acts in‐between the various architectures of belonging. Filmmakers include Frances Bodomo, Mandana Moghaddam, Marissa Lee Benedict and David Rueter, and Liam Young. SAIC President Elissa Tenny said, “I am so excited to bring this crucial exploration of citizenship to the United States. During its welcomed reception in the international showcase of the Venice Biennale, Dimensions of Citizenship spoke to our global imagination about the ways in which the built environment affects the politics of belonging. While the exhibition’s focus won’t change in Chicago, it will be an important showcase for the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and The University of Chicago, who realized the exhibition together, to enact this important conversation with our campus communities and neighbors throughout the city.” “The arts at The University of Chicago embrace a commitment to experimental scholarship with global impact and engagement with distinctive architecture,” said Robert J. Zimmer, president of The University of Chicago. “La Biennale di Venezia provided an opportunity to collaborate with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago on an exhibition that presents the American architectural imagination at its best and dramatizes how that imagination connects to the question of citizenship, a question of urgency around the globe.” Zimmer added, “We are grateful for the collaboration and philanthropic support that have made it possible to bring this exhibition to additional audiences in Chicago.” Additional information, texts produced by editorial partner e‐flux Architecture, and previous programming is available at: http://dimensionsofcitizenship.org Dimensions of Citizenship is sponsored in Chicago by the Alphawood Foundation in collaboration with the School of the Art Institute and The University of Chicago. As a typology, high-rise residential buildings have a unique set of challenges to becoming fully activated urban participants in the cities in which they are located. While there is a general recognition and appreciation that tall buildings provide identity to a city, there is often criticism of how they relate to their surroundings. Critics have posited that tall buildings are insular and foreboding by their very nature. This paper explores several design avenues for architects to consider in order to improve the social aspect of tall buildings. As all cities become taller and denser to accommodate growth, the need to design social space in, on, and around tall buildings must be continually examined if we are to have cohesive urban fabric that supports communities.

April 9 Richard Talaske (Talaske Group) Rick Talaske relishes great soundscapes. The engineer-turned-scientist-turned- acoustician routinely explores the world’s great concert halls and theaters. Surveying a hall’s soaring spaces and elegant architectural expressions, his mind translates a room’s geometry, the character of its surfaces, its materials, and spatial dimensions into acoustic possibilities. Analysis, investigation, and reverence converge to plumb the space’s possibilities — to take away whatever secrets and lessons it might reveal. Talaske is someone who is never satisfied with what he already knows. Clients expect that Talaske’s rigorous technical and scientific education would result in exacting methodology and specific design standards. He is cheerily unapologetic about what might be experienced as “obsession with sound.” People don’t hire a world-class acoustician to achieve only fair results. What surprises some people is his passionate and enthusiastic advocacy for both performers and audience members. As an avid lover of live performance himself, he strives to create spaces that enhance live events. Before founding his acoustical consulting firm nearly 20 years ago, Talaske was a protegé of Larry Kirkegaard, advancing quickly to senior consultant where he was assigned major design and project management responsibilities for the Portland Center for Performing Arts, Bayfront Center St.

  • The Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership
CHAPTER 16 The Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership by Studio Gang Architects The Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership at Kalamazoo College in Michigan is a new, purpose- built structure dedicated to developing emerging leaders and sustaining existing leaders in human rights and social justice. This paper addresses the challenges and achievements of using cordwood masonry (wood masonry is the term we use most) to construct it. The use of wood masonry for the Arcus Center is a key part of the building’s design, and resonates with the center’s social justice mission. In using this method at an institutional scale, we were presented with interesting logistical and technical challenges. However, by merging traditional cordwood masonry practices with contemporary design and building technologies, we were able to explore new and different ways to incorporate the benefits of this traditional method. Why Wood Masonry? The process of building with wood masonry and the values it represents directly informed the Arcus Center’s design and construction. Remaining true to the com- munal history and spirit of this tradition, every stage of the project — the decision to use wood masonry, procurement of the material and its methods of construction and detailing — was approached as a collaboration between the College (our client), (Author’s note: Claire Halpin and Wei-Ju Lai of Studio Gang Architects, Chicago, pre- sented a version of this chapter at the Continental Cordwood Conference in July of 2015. Their paper was subtitled “Merging a Traditional Building Method with Com- mercial Construction Technology.” I was brought in as a consultant in the early design stages, and, prior to construction, Jaki and I trained the expert brick and stone masons in the special considerations for cordwood masonry.

Architect Jeanne Gang named in Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2019 Jeanne Gang leads the design for California College of the Arts’ expanded campus in San Francisco Jeanne Gang. Courtesy of Studio Gang. San Francisco, CA—April 17, 2019—Today, Time Magazine released its TIME 100: Most Influential People of 2019, with architect and MacArthur Fellow Jeanne Gang, founding principal of Studio Gang, as the only architect included on this year’s list. Gang is a pioneering architect, champion of gender equity, leader on sustainability, and one of the few women to reach the highest echelons of a historically male-dominated field. Gang was recently selected for the $8.5 billion Chicago O’Hare International Airport expansion, becoming the first woman to design a major U.S. airport terminal. In November 2016, California College of the Arts (CCA) selected the award- winning architecture firm Studio Gang to design a new, expanded campus that will bring all of CCA’s 2,000 students and programs together for the first time in San Francisco. CCA and Studio Gang will create a living, learning laboratory— a new kind of academic space for makers and thinkers—that will accommodate everything from traditional to experimental practices and serve as a model of sustainability. In addition, CCA has been a trailblazer in creating student housing. With the opening of Blattner Hall in September 2018 and the groundbreaking of 188 Hooper in February 2019, CCA is on track to house nearly half of its student body by 2020. “I am incredibly proud to be working with Jeanne Gang, who is much- deserving of this international recognition,” says CCA President Stephen Beal.
