    Mark Waugh Cricket Mark Waugh was cricket made classy. The twin brother of Aussie captain Steve, ‘Junior’ was one of the world's most elegant and gifted stroke-makers. His game was characterised by an ability to drive, cut, pull and loft the ball so effortlessly that it could make him look disdainful of the talents of bowlers. Mark Taylor called Waugh “the best-looking leg-side player I've seen in my time. Anything drifting into his pads is hit beautifully.” Junior made his name as a middle- order player for New South Wales, twice winning the Sheffield Shield Cricketer of the Year title. He was finally picked for his Test debut in 1991 against England in the Fourth Test at the Adelaide Oval, ironically at the expense of his out-of-form brother. Waugh came to the crease on the first day with Australia in trouble at 4/104 and the situation deteriorated to 5/126 when Greg Matthews joined him at the crease. Junior brought up his century with a square drive close to stumps. Phil Wilkins of the SMH wrote that "Such a maiden Test century could hardly have been surpassed for commanding presence." To complement his batting skills, Junior was a handy part- time bowler and a wonderful fieldsman - he had few rivals to match his freakish brilliance in the field. In the following game against North Sydney at Coogee he was again in the wickets taking 5-42 off 14 overs and followed up with yet another five wicket haul the next match against Northern District taking 5-24 off 12 overs at Mark Taylor Oval.

The first was as a highly accomplished opening batsman for Northamptonshire who gained Test recognition. The second, of course, has been that of a highly influential figure in Durham‟s latent irresistible rise. GEOFFREY COOK was born in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, on 9 October 1951. Educated at Middlesbrough High School, he became one of a number of men from the North East to migrate south to play county cricket. Those who played for Northamptonshire included Colin Milburn and Peter Willey. He made his Northants debut in 1971 and received his county cap in 1975, when he passed 1,000 runs in a season for the first time. He was to reach that landmark on twelve occasions, his best summer being 1981 – his first year as county captain – when he scored 1759 runs (avge. 43.97). He was chosen for the England tour to India and Sri Lanka in the following winter. Typically cultured centuries at Indore and Kandy took him into the England team for the inaugural Test against Sri Lanka at Colombo – an auspicious occasion on which to make a Test debut. He retained his place for the three Tests against India in the ensuing summer, making 66 at Old Trafford, during which he shared an opening stand of 106 with Chris Tavare, and 50 at The Oval. However, he then lost his place for the three Test series against Pakistan, as England experimented with Derek Randall in an opening batsman‟s role.
