HONG

Liu Hong was born in Fengxian city in Shan’xi Province in 1956. In 1982, she graduated from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute with a major in Oil Painting. She received her Master’s Degree in Oil Painting in 1986, and teaches at the Institute to this day. Liu Hong is also the Dean at the Chengdu Academy of Fine Arts.

The artist started painting at a young age, and fell in love with oils. “I decided that I would not study art if I could not get into the Oil Painting Department at the Fine Arts Institute, so I submitted only a single application. Luckily for me, I was accepted – otherwise my life would have had quite a different path,” Liu Hong explained.

Her upcoming Hong Kong exhibition “Luscious Lips” at Fabrik Gallery in Sheung Wan portrays the role of consumerism and changing moral values among Chinese women. “I have deliberately painted my subjects’ lips in an overtly sexual way. My women with their brightly coloured hair against subdued grey backgrounds are passionate, sexy, independent and bold. But they are also objects of the mass media – the conundrum of modern Chinese society,” she explains.

Recently the artist completed projects with Louis Vuitton and luxury goods group Richemont. Liu Hong’s works have otherwise been widely exhibited and the artist has won broad recognition amongst institutions including; ’s National Museum of Art, Shanghai Art Museum, Shenzhen Art Museum and Wenxuan Art Museum. Other collectors include RBS Bank, White Rabbit Chinese Contemporary Art Museum in Sydney and the Knite Family Museum in Switzerland.
