MAKE SURE YOU ARE GETTING WHAT YOU PAID FOR

Have you done any work at your house lately, replaced an old furnace or hot water tank, built a deck, updated your electric panel, or are you thinking of doing a remodel, adding an addition, or building a shed or an accessory structure? You may need a permit. The Geauga County Building Department enforces the Ohio Building Code for commercial structures and the Residential Code of Ohio for all residential structures. This permit process is not just required by state law but is also a cheap form of insurance. The Department will confirm that your project meets code requirements whether you are doing it or if you hired someone to do it for you. The Department makes sure that contractors are licensed by the state when required and that all contractors have shown proof of insurance to be working in the County.

We will review plans to make sure they meet the required roof snow load and wind ratings for Geauga. Roofs, if not designed properly for Geauga County, could fail under snow load. Roofs in Geauga are required to be designed for a minimum 30 pound per square foot snow load. This could be as little as 10 inches of heavy wet frozen snow. Anything designed under the 30 psf load could collapse with much less snow. The Building Department also performs many inspections to verify that the project is being built according to the approved plans and that the installation of furnaces, electric panels, etc. are installed properly making sure the owner is getting what they paid for. For example it is important to have new high efficiency furnaces inspected to confirm that they are vented properly. Today’s new furnaces run so efficient that they produce approximately 8 gallons of condensate in a 24hr period of normal operation. All this moisture if not vented and drained properly could cause serious damage to the chimney and interior of your house

Unfortunately it is the Homeowners responsibility as the property owner to make sure you have a permit when work is being done on your property. Most permit fees are already in the cost of your project because the contractor knows that this is a required process in the state of Ohio. They adjust their price accordingly. Make sure you are getting what you paid for.

If you have any Questions feel free to contact the Geauga County Building Department at 440.279.1780. The Department will also be trying to get out to your local senior centers for Question and Answer sessions.

22 COPING WITH THE AGING PROCESS Senior Assessment Program Enhances Lives of Older Adults During the aging process, many older adults have special health care needs they must address. Identifying specific needs often can be challenging. When an older adult experiences such safety concerns as medication management, frequent falls, difficulty driving, memory loss, and decreased ability in managing activities of daily living, they become a prime candidate for a senior assessment.

A comprehensive mental and physical evaluation can be found at the Norma N. Chapman Senior Assessment Program at University Hospitals Geauga Health Center. The multidisciplinary evaluation is a valuable program for older adults, and an indispensable tool for family members, physicians, and agencies working with the senior population.

The Senior Assessment Program’s multidisciplinary team provides the patient with a physical examination that includes a history of their health, and a comprehensive review of their medications. A geriatric psychiatrist evaluates the patient for cognitive issues, including memory loss and depression, frequent problems facing older adults.

A pharmacist reviews medications and assesses the patient for compliance, adverse reactions and cost. A physical therapist assesses the patient’s functional mobility and balance. A social worker/coordinator facilitates referrals to the appropriate community agencies to better assist the patient and their family. An occupational therapist completes an in-home assessment to determine functional abilities and the patient’s safety in their home.

As the assessment concludes, the patient, their family, their physician, and the referring agency are provided with detailed recommendations for the patient care going forward. These steps often include preventive measures that can improve the person’s quality of life. A follow up meeting with the patient and their family is conducted, at which time each recommendation is reviewed and discussed. The social work coordinator helps the patient and family implement the recommendations. The report and recommendations are forwarded to the patient primary care physician who they will continue to follow.

Fortunately, there are many resources available to older adults and their families to allow the older adult to maintain their independence safely in their home. Senior services, such as those offered through the Geauga County Department on Aging, home care, adult day programming, assisted living facilities, and Memory Care facilities are some options available to seniors. Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance companies are accepted for the Norma N. Chapman Senior Assessment Program.

For more information about the Norma N. Chapman Senior Assessment Program at University Hospitals Geauga Health Center, please call Cheryl Hollowell at 440-285-6408 or via email: cheryl.hollowell@ uhhospitals.org
