Scottish Parliament Fact Sheet Contributors to Time for Reflection: Session 4 23 March 2016 Parliamentary Business: Current Series The Scottish Parliament and Scottish Parliament I nfor mation C entre l ogo Scottish Parliament Fact sheet Contributors to Time for Reflection: Session 4 23 March 2016 Parliamentary Business: Current Series This fact sheet provides a list of contributors to Time for Reflection in the Scottish Parliament during Session 4. It is arranged by date, with the most recent date and Official Report reference appearing first. It also includes the name and religious affiliation of the contributor, and additional information about the contributor. Time for Reflection is normally the first item of business at a meeting of the Parliament each week. Following the Reform of Parliamentary Business Inquiry, it was decided to move Time for Reflection. From 4 September 2012 Time for Reflection became the first item of business on Tuesday afternoon. Previously it was the first item of business on Wednesday afternnoons. A speaker addresses the meeting for up to 4 minutes. Invitations to address the Parliament at Time for Reflection are issued by the Presiding Officer on advice from the Parliamentary Bureau. The pattern of speakers reflects the balance of beliefs in Scotland (based on the Census). In general, nominations for contributors are proposed to the Presiding Officer by MSPs or by the religions or faiths directly. There have been occasions when individuals have written to the Presiding Officer with nominations for contributors. During Mass, Bishop Joseph Toal blessed the new Guardian Angel Window Panel and dedicated SCSS to the protecon of the Guardian Angels. A prayer card with a picture of the window and the new Naonal Safeguarding Prayer together with a candle again replicang the image of the window was given to all delegates. SCSS also commissioned a larger candle for each Diocesan Safeguarding Advisory Group. At the end of the conference these candles were taken back to each Diocesan Office and have already been used at other more local safeguarding events and Safeguarding Advisory Group meengs. Message from Bishop Toal This is the first newsleer from Tina Campbell and the SCSS staff as she completes her first year in post.     Message from Rev. Jonathan Humphrey, Minister for Kirkhill and Kiltarlity In the church “calendar” we are in the season of Pentecost and taking time to look at the impact of the out-pouring of the Holy Spirit on the early believers ( see Acts 2 ). It has always struck me that something new and wonderful was created through the gift of the Holy Spirit – namely a vibrant and ever expanding Christian community. This community “devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers” ( Acts 2: 42 ). For me this passage suggests that in the life of our congregations, devotion to fellowship is as important as listening to teaching ( i.e. a sermon ) or breaking bread and praying together. Jesus spent time with people and with his disciples building fellowship, comforting, challenging and encouraging. A large part of ministry, and the call on all of us as the people of God, is to build relationships and to encourage everyone to find faith and grow in it. Growing in our faith requires that we are deliberate in safeguarding our relationship with Jesus. The more we get to know Him, the more we are transformed into His likeness. This is about raising the “relationship bar” on all fronts, with God and each other. The first Christians were: “together and had all things in common. And they were selling possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all as they had need. And day by day attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favour with all the people.” ( Acts 2: 44-47 ) This is a challenging blueprint for us all.

Sacred Scripture calls us repeatedly not to fear and to look to the help that comes to us from above. We are called to support one another in every way we can, especially those who are most vulnerable, through age or underlying conditions. Even in the midst of any necessary “distancing” we must stand by each other. We ask you to pray for the sick, those caring for them, for those in positions of responsibility with difficult decisions to make, indeed for our whole country and the entire human family. Most of all, we are being asked to put our trust in the living God who has created everything to be and to flourish and whose providence guides the course of world events. We put our trust in our Lord Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, and the true physician of our souls and bodies. During this Lent, especially, let us all take the opportunity to deepen our relationship with God. As your bishops and with our priests and deacons, we assure you of our continuing commitment to your spiritual, pastoral and sacramental needs.
