Brockdish Conservation Area Character Appraisal Introduction The historic village of Brockdish is situated along the north side of the floodplain of the River Waveney. A predominantly linear settlement, the centre of the village is at the crossroads along the old Harleston to Diss Road, with Syleham Road leading south to the bridging point at Syleham Mills and Grove Road leading north. The settlement lies 2 ½ miles W.S.W of Harleston, and 5 East of Diss, and is one of a string of similar settlements on the north side of the Waveney between Beccles and Diss. The construction of the new A143 in 1996 to the north, which now bypasses the village, has significantly reduced traffic flow and has once again made Brockdish a quiet rural village. Perhaps partly due to the difficulty of building on land around the village because of the floodplain to the south and rising land on the north side, the bulk of C20 development has been built in a separate detached part of the settlement to the west. The new settlement area is closer to the parish church of St Peter and St Paul, which is a mile west of the historic settlement.

The core of the Polish air units fighting alongside the Allies were experienced veterans of the 1939 Invasion of Poland. They contributed to the Allied victory in the Battle of Britain and most World War II air operations. A total of 145 Polish fighter pilots served in the RAF during the Battle of Britain, making up the largest non-British contribution.[1] By the end of the war, around 19,400 Poles were serving in the RAF.[2] History After the joint German-Soviet victory in the Invasion of Poland of 1939, most of the flying personnel and technicians of the Polish Air Force were evacuated to Romania and Hungary, after which thousands found their way to France. There, in accordance with the Franco-Polish Military Alliance of 1921 and the amendments of 1939, Polish Air Force units were to be re-created. However, the French headquarters was hesitant about creating large Polish air units, and instead most Polish pilots were attached to small units, so-called keys. Only one large unit was formed, the Groupe de Chasse polonaise I/145 stationed at Mions airfield.

WW2 Trail During World War 2 the Waveney Valley was home to a number of US Servicemen, who made up the ‘Friendly Invasion’. The invaders were thousands of young Americans, part of the United States Army Air Force’s vast contribution 1 to the Allies’ strategic bombing offensive being waged against Nazi-occupied Europe. There were up to 50,000 US personnel stationed here and in 3 2 the surrounding area at any one time. By 1944, Norfolk echoed to the roar of B24 Liberators and B17 Flying Fortresses as huge aerial armadas took to the skies from a countryside so freckled with bomber bases that it became known as ‘Little America’. Learn more about our rich wartime heritage in this WW2 Trail. 1 Seething Control Tower Seething Control Tower Museum is a restored World War II air traffic control tower, located at Seething Airfield in South Norfolk, England.
