Data Source Data included in this report comes from the Vermont Supplemental Enrollment Survey which is completed annually for VHEC by each college in Vermont. The data collected is based on the official Fall enrollment for 2013 and thus all headcounts should be identical to the figures reported in the IPEDS Fall Enrollment Survey for academic year 2013-14.

KEY to shaded cells in the following charts

indicates this educational level (Undergraduate or Graduate) or this type of study (distance education) is not offered by the college.

Definitions

Degree-seeking Students enrolled in courses for credit and recognized by the institution as seeking a degree, certificate, or other formal award. High school students also enrolled in postsecondary courses for credit are not considered degree/certificate-seeking.

Distance education (from IPEDS) Education that uses one or more technologies to deliver instruction to students who are separated from the instructor and to support regular and substantive interaction between the students and the instructor synchronously or asynchronously.

Technologies used for instruction may include the following: Internet; one-way and two-way transmissions through open broadcasts, closed circuit, cable, microwave, broadband lines, fiber optics, satellite or wireless communication devices; audio conferencing; and video cassette, DVDs, and CD-ROMs, if the cassette, DVDs, and CD-ROMs are used in a course in conjunction with the technologies listed above.

Distance education course (from IPEDS) A course in which the instructional content is delivered exclusively via distance education. Requirements for coming to campus for orientation, testing, or academic support services do not exclude a course from being classified as distance education.

Requirements for coming to campus for orientation, testing, or academic support services do not exclude a course from being classified as exclusively distance education. Similarly, if a student is taking instructional portions of their program entirely online, but are then required to complete a practicum, residency, or internship, the student can still be considered enrolled in entirely education courses.

First-time freshman A student who has no prior postsecondary experience (except as noted below) attending any institution for the first time at the undergraduate level. This includes students enrolled in academic or occupational programs. It also includes students enrolled in the fall term who attended college for the first time in the prior summer term, and students who entered with advanced standing (college credits earned before graduation from high school).

First-time transfer student A student entering the reporting institution for the first time but known to have previously attended a postsecondary institution at the same level (e.g., undergraduate, graduate). The student may transfer with or without credit.

Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) The full-time equivalent (FTE) of students is a single value providing a meaningful combination of full-time and part-time students. IPEDS data products currently have two calculations of FTE students, one using fall student headcounts and the other using 12-month instructional activity.

VHEC Calculation of FTE students: The method for calculating full-time equivalency in VHEC reporting varies from both of the IPEDS calculations and may also vary from the definition used on each college campus. For undergraduate students, FTE equals student credit hours divided by 15. For graduate students, FTE equals student credit hours divided by 12. Due to the fact that some students take more than 15 credit hours, they count for more than one FTE. Therefore, the FTE as % of Headcount can exceed 100%. Total FTE counts include all students taking degree and non-degree undergraduate and post-baccalaureate courses.

Full-time student Undergraduate: A student enrolled for 12 or more semester credits, or 12 or more quarter credits, or 24 or more contact hours a week each term. Graduate: A student enrolled for 9 or more semester credits, or 9 or more quarter credits, or a student involved in thesis or dissertation preparation that is considered full-time by the institution. Doctor's degree - Professional practice - as defined by the institution.

Matriculated To matriculate is to be officially admitted to the University after having met entrance requirements.

Part-time student Undergraduate: A student enrolled for either less than 12 semester or quarter credits, or less than 24 contact hours a week each term. Graduate: A student enrolled for less than 9 semester or quarter credits.
