35th season in college coaching, 39th overall • 635-454 career record (.583) • 283-295 (.490), 19th season at NSU Times have changed with Coach Mike in charge When he was hired as head coach at his father’s alma mater in March 1999, Mike McConathy took the helm of a basketball program that was, to put it kindly, struggling. Prior to Coach Mike’s arrival, NSU had only five winning seasons in 24 years of NCAA Division I competition. The high points of modern-day Demon basketball before McConathy were a stunning upset win on Dec. 7, 1988 at Rupp Arena to hand Kentucky its first home-opening loss in 21 seasons, and a 1994 NCAA team scoring title. Five previous coaches, including a couple who had been highly successful elsewhere (Wayne Yates, J.D. Barnett), had been unable to establish sustained success. Then, and now: Noteworthy on Coach Mike Then - 5 winning seasons in 24 years, 5 straight losing seasons going into 1999-  2000 Four of his former assistant coaches, Dave Simmons (11th year, McNeese Now - 11 winning seasons in 18 years, including 5 of the last 7 State), Mark Slessinger (6th year, New Orleans), Buzz Williams (3rd year, Va.
