“The Lost Boy, Part IV” Lesson Plan for Teachers 2020 Overview: This lesson plan will provide teachers with additional information about Thomas Wolfe, methods of analysis for this chapter, part IV of the novella The Lost Boy, and a brief background of the story’s historical context. The information will provide material for discussion of the text as a companion to the “Telling Our Tales” student writing competition. Objectives: 1. Students will create a work of fiction based on their own personal experiences or the experiences of someone they know. 2. Students will be able to explain how Thomas Wolfe's writing was based on his experiences. 3. Students will be able to identify major themes in the story “The Lost Boy, Part IV” and connect those themes to ideas from their own lives. Suitable for classes in grades 4-12. The success of his attempt has been appraised very differently by the critics and worshipers of Wolfe. Although some feel that he failed miserably, others contend that he was very successful. Wolfe's critics say that he has tried too hard to grasp a great deal more than any one man is capable of holding, thus causing some of his characters and scenes to appear incredible and overdone. Others say that Wolfe managed to catch just enough of the hopes and aspirations common to all men to warrant himself a prominent place among great American writers. Perhaps William Faulkner expressed best what the admirers of Wolfe feeli I never said that Wolfe was the "greatest American writer of modem times," I said, and this was several years ago, that among his and my contem- poraries, I rated Wolfe first because he had tried hardest to say the most—a generalisation ^sic] made rather in conversation than as a public statement.
