The A.T. Stewart Store at 280 Broadway constructed in 1845 is considered to be the world’s first true department store.
The first elevated railway tracks were demonstrated on Greenwich Street in 1867.
In 1870, about three decades before theadvent of the modern day subway, an experimental tubular car invention was designed that was propelled by compressed air. The trial car and tunnel was constructed under Broadway
