He’d already recorded ‘For Lovers’ and was desperate to record the B-side; it was a beautiful song and he was convinced it would be a hit. He’d also finished recording the debut Babyshambles single. But Pete and Carl still wanted to write together. They needed to collaborate and bond after the debacle of their trip to the Welsh valleys, and they had a second Libertines album to write. So they decided to head to Paris.

The mini-convention, featuring a panel of local music people, will discuss, amongst other musical topics, the idea of keeping things local. OX4 takes place on Saturday 10th October at venues the length of Cowley Road, including the 02 Academy, the Bullingdon, East Oxford Community Centre, Baby Simple, Trees Lounge, Café Tarifa, Café Milano, the Brickworks and the Restore Garden Café. Yui Mok/European Pressphoto Agency Chaos before the storm: the singer and guitarist Pete Doherty performing with his band Babyshambles in London in January. By DOMINIC PATTEN VEN by the standards of the great rock-'n'-roll train wrecks, these have been rough times for Pete Doherty. Sure, the 25-year-old frontman of the band Babyshambles has had tremendous musical success. And sure, he has enjoyed the company - in parties and gossip columns - of the glamorous Kate Moss. But that was before he was arrested on Feb. 2 on charges of robbery and blackmail. After that he spent five very unglamorous days in the Pentonville Prison in London, suffering from a painful heroin withdrawal and wondering whether anyone could raise £150,000 (about $280,230) for his bail. No one could claim to be entirely surprised by his fall. After gaining some attention in his teens as a poet, Mr. Doherty formed the Libertines with Carl Barat. With their street-urchin image and dark thrashy tunes of urban squalor, the band was described as "Britpop meets Baudelaire," and the two songwriters were compared to Morrissey and Johnny Marr of the Smiths. Their first album, "Up the Bracket," debuted in the British Top 20 in late 2002, and soon went platinum. But in addition to his musical talent, Mr. Doherty demonstrated an effortless knack for getting himself in trouble. In June 2003 he entered the first of many stints in rehab, only to walk away days later.

The best of British – Arctic Monkeys , Muse and Kasabian – will take on stateside success stories My Chemical Romance and The Killers on March 1 at Hammersmith Palais. Let battle commence! This year, there’s no one clear leader but FIVE bands that dominate the nominations list. With four nominations each, Arctic Monkeys, Muse, Kasabian, The Killers and My Chemical Romance have been chosen by the fans to fight it out on the night. For the past two years, it’s been British bands sweeping the board, but this year The Killers and My Chemical Romance may very well make the 2007 ceremony a stateside success story. Arctic Monkeys made NME Awards history last year by scooping the Award for both Best New Band and Best British Band in the same year, in addition to winning Best Track and scoring a nomination for Best Live Band . Sheffield’s favourites have matched their achievement, with four nominations this year for Best British Band, Best Live Band, Best Album and Best Music DVD. Arctic Monkeys said: “Very nice, we didn’t think we would get any this year! It seems weird for us to be alongside them [the competition] because we still feel like a little band. When it’s your own thing you don’t really see yourself alongside The Killers and Kasabian.” The Monkeys have more than one tough fight on their hands if they want to claim the Best British Band title for the second year running, though.
