CHAPTER EIGHT: McCORKLE PLACE McCorkle Place is said to be the most densely memorialized piece of real estate in North Carolina.501 On the University’s symbolic front lawn, there are almost a dozen monuments and memorials fundamental to the University’s lore and traditions, but only two monuments within the space have determined the role of McCorkle Place as a space for racial justice movements.502 The Unsung Founders Memorial and the University’s Confederate Monument were erected on the oldest quad of the campus almost a century apart for dramatically different memorial purposes. The former honors the enslaved and freed Black persons who “helped build” the University, while the latter commemorated, until its toppling in August 2018, “the sons of the University who entered the war of 1861-65.”503 Separated by only a few dozen yards, the physical distinctions between the two monuments were, before the Confederate Monument was toppled, quite striking. By Liz Bell Staff Writer At the end of this semester, UNC students’ transcripts will give a more complete picture of how they performed in classes this fall. Instead of lone letter grades, each grade will be accompanied by that course section’s size, the median grade in the section, the students’ per- centile range from the median and the number of grades above, at and below the median score. Gidi Shemer, a biology professor, said con- textualized grading is a big step for both UNC professors and students. “Now for the very first time, UNC is brave enough to take such initiative to think not just short-term, but long-term, for the benefit of the students,” he said. Each new transcript will also include a Schedule Point Average, which averages the median grades of the courses a student is taking that semester. Andrew Perrin, a sociology professor, said the addition of these elements makes transcripts more honest. He said he has been pushing for the policy since the mid-2000s. Beginning with the University’s legal desegregation, this dissertation tells the history of Black students’ and workers’ resistance to institutional anti-Blackness, demonstrating how the University consistently sought to exclude Black identities and diminish any movement that challenged its white supremacy. Activated by the knowledge of the University’s history as a site of enslavement and as an institution which maintained and fortified white supremacy and segregation across North Carolina, Black students and workers protested the ways in which the University reflects and enacts systemic racial inequities within its institutional and campus landscapes. -

THE NEWSLETTER DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY Number 56 Chapel Hill, North Carolina Autumn 2007 GREETINGS FROM THE CHAIR The intellectual community of a dynamic History Department might be compared to one of those famous intellectual salons in eighteenth-century Paris: There is a core of regular members who are present throughout the year, there are interesting visitors who stop by to share a manuscript or a conversation, there are travelers who stay in contact from distant places (or archives) by correspondence, there are opportunities to share food or drink, and there are frequent intergenerational exchanges of ideas, experiences, and transnational perspectives. Although I would not want to compare the chair’s role in a modern University department to the work of influential salonnières who hosted Parisian salons, I can say that the chair of the UNC History Department enjoys the salonnière’s pleasure of participating in all kinds of conversations or activities and learning from the many talented colleagues who create a diverse and constantly evolving academic community. This past year has been filled with the various scholarly, pedagogical, and social events that make the UNC History Department such an engaging place to work and study. As usual, we taught well over 8,000 students in our classes and celebrated a memorable Commencement Day recognition for our graduating majors. We also hosted distinguished visiting speakers, continued our program of faculty and graduate student research colloquia, and published a wide range of new scholarship-- including ten books and more than 75 articles, book chapters, and essays. Our faculty also published nine edited books, presented scores of papers at scholarly conferences, and served on the editorial boards of more than twenty scholarly journals. -

ABSTRACT SMITH, LINDA FARRIS. “Nothing Short of Revolution”: Black Power on North Carolina College Campuses. (Under the direction of Dr. Katherine Mellen Charron). This thesis explores the relationships between the national Black Power Movement and desegregation politics in North Carolina higher education in the late 1960s and 1970s. During this time, North Carolina’s system of higher education remained embroiled in a battle to stall integration despite extensive federal intervention. Meanwhile, black college students in the state employed the politics of self-determination and sophisticated organizing tactics to wage their own campaigns for the power to shape their higher education experience. This thesis shows how these two issues – desegregation and Black Power – affected the activist goals and protest strategies of black students at both historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), and predominantly white institutions. Although recent scholarship has begun to address the Black Power Movement on college campuses in other regions of the United States, studies of the South remain underrepresented. This analysis offers the first comparative view of black student activism at HBCUs across the state, and reveals a more complex narrative of Black Power politics that manifested in rural and urban regions, and whose chronological scope extends beyond national trends. It also reveals the overt failures of North Carolina higher education desegregation policies, thus challenging depictions of the state and its actions during this period as progressive. Relying on university governance records; institutional funding, enrollment, and academic program data; oral history interviews; campus newspapers; and other student publications, this thesis documents black students’ struggle for educational access, institutional equity, and student autonomy. -

As you will see in this bulletin, the examples of Buckley Public Service Scholars’ dedication and work are wide-ranging and multifaceted. From connecting classroom learning to local nonprofits and conducting research in partnership with the community to working on CLASS OF innovative solutions to global issues and harnessing philanthropy as a tool for social change, they put their heads, hearts and souls behind our mission of public service. Carolina’s Buckley Public Service Scholars inspire us all through their personal example. It is exciting to think about all they will accomplish in the future as they leave Carolina with their 2018! dedication to making a difference in the lives of others. Carol L.
