Five Saints – senior captain Matt Masciadrelli, Jack Masciadrelli, Hayden Lussier, Collin Freeman and Chloe Lussier – represented their school proudly with strong runs in the slalom and Giant Slalom competitions. “We really had some great skiing by the team today,” St. Mary ski coach Andy Lussier said. “All of our athletes really skied strong and pushed hard especially with the challeng- ing slalom course sets. The field was pretty deep with over 150 girls and 150 boys and our Saints managed to get a few into to the top 10.” Matthew Masciadrelli set the pace, sking into second place in the GS with a time of 37.94. “He really attacked the GS and skied the steeps with an aggressive line,” coach Lussier said of his top skier. “He is definitely one of the most consistent skiers in that discipline. It’s his thing.” Jack Masciadrelli skied into seventh in the slalom with some smart tactics, and good ski- ing as well. “He really paid attention in our inspection and took it into his run,” coach Lussier said of Jack. “He skied clean and smooth through the pitch and really attacked the top of the course.” Other medalists included Westfield girls’ skier Grace O’Connor (8th place GS finish; The St. Mary ski team, from left to right, St. Mary’s Chloe Lussier, coach Andy Lussier, Hayden Lussier, Matt Masciadrelli, Jack Maciadrelli, 42.22) and boys’ skier Jacob Stephens (10th Collin Freeman, and assistant coach Brian Freeman, represented the school’s program at the state championships Tuesday at Berkshire East in place slalom finish). Golden Eagles Continued from Page 9 the arc gave the Bombers a 6-5 lead a short time after. Aidan Dunn’s 3-ball stopped a 7-0 spurt by Central at the end of the first quarter. Central (21-0) pushed its lead to double-digits late in the first half with a 13-4 run. The Golden Eagles led by nearly 20 points midway through the third quarter. One play in the third quarter symbolized the kind of effort it would take for 32 minutes to have a chance to beat Central. Santos dribbled to the foul line, leapt off his feet in traffic, and with hands waving in his face, he hung in mid-air a split second longer than his nearest defenders, and rattled in a beautiful jump shot. It took a flawless effort to beat the defense. To ask the Bombers to do that over and over and over again would be doing nearly the impossible. Central protected its commanding lead until the very end. “Coming in my senior year as a leader and team captain, that really put the responsibility on me,” said Santos, who responded with a team-high 17 points. Dunn finished with 15. “This season meant so much.” Westfield finishes the season with a record of 14-8, a league title, and just one victory short of a finals appearance. “We set our goals for a 10-win season,” coach Balestracci said. “Then we got into the tournament, we set our goals to win a league title. These kids played really hard. They’re really unselfish players.”

Pope praises Pyeongchang Olympics as bridge to peace VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has praised the Pyeongchang Olympics for showing that sport can “build bridges between countries in conflict and give a valid contribution to peace.” Francis delivered the message during his general audience Wednesday ahead of the start of the Paralympics. Francis praised the paralympic ath- letes as “examples of courage, perseverance and tenacity in not letting limitations have the last word.” During the recent Winter Olympics, North and South Korean officials met, and a summit is now scheduled for the first time in a decade. Francis, who has expressed repeated alarm about the prospects of nuclear conflict on the Korean peninsula, said the just-completed games showed how sport can bring peace, and the paralympics even moreso. He offered prayers “for peace and joy for all.”

A 74-54 win over BYU in the West Coast Conference Tournament title game Tuesday night gave the Bulldogs an automatic bid to the NCAAs. Gonzaga would have made the NCAA Tournament regardless, so the Zags’ victory opened one more precious at-large berth for other contenders. Nebraska and Penn State can breathe easy, at least for one more night. The Big Ten’s bubble teams can only watch now while other schools get a chance to impress the selection committee. It’s an excruciating wait until the bracket is announced this weekend because the Big Ten tourney ended Sunday after being moved up a week earlier than normal in order to play at Madison Square Garden in New York. What can help the Cornhuskers and Nittany Lions is if the favorites win the automatic bids in the remaining conference tournaments in order to leave as many at-large berths open as possible. Gonzaga did them a favor by blowing out BYU . The Cougars (24-10, 67 RPI) likely lost their only shot to get into the NCAAs.
