A Message from the Assistant Principal

Students and staff,

I cannot believe how fast the year is moving. It is October already. I love the fall. It is a time to settle in and prepare for winter. It is also the time to reinforce and practice all the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. So I will take this opportunity to remind everyone of the “Smith-isms.” They are:

*If it is not yours don’t touch it. *If it is not nice don’t say it. *There is a right way and a wrong way to everything; we must agree on what the right way is. *Walk don’t run. *Take care of your stuff. *Leave it nicer than you found it.

In closing, I would ask everyone to WIN THE DAY!

Sincerely,

Mr. Ouimet Smith Assistant Principal Garfield Middle School

SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE

What a blast I am having getting to know all the wonderful students, staff and parents! Thank you for being so welcoming as I continue to acclimate to the District and get to know everyone!

I have just scratched the surface in learning about all the great things happening in the District and all the accomplishments by our students. I would like to congratulate the 83 Lakewood High students and 2018 graduates who were recently recognized as AP Scholars. I would also like to congratulate our three National Merit Commended Scholars: seniors Nicholas Cleary, Timothy Daso and Andrew Sheldon. These three young men were among the top 5% of all PSAT scorers their junior year. Congratulations to all!

I would also like to announce that I will be holding monthly Listen & Learn sessions beginning in October. These sessions will be a one hour, open discussion format held at various times in the day and various locations across the city. Please feel free to stop by any time during a session and sit and talk with me about your likes, dislikes, concerns and hopes for the future for Lakewood City Schools. A schedule will be publicized soon so keep an eye on your inbox, our website and social media.

Garfield Middle School Parents,

Happy Fall! Thank you to all the parents who came to the PTSA Unit Meeting on September 19th. I hope everyone learned a lot about what is happening at the school.

A huge thank you goes out to Nora Black, VP Fundraising for organizing the Spirit Wear Sale! By now, you should have received your spirit wear but if you have not, please let us know and we will track it down. Items were distributed from the week of September 24th. We are considering a spring sale as well so stay tuned! We received 15% of our total sales as a donation from Lakewood Black Label, the company who designed and printed the shirts. They are a local company and love to give back to the community. Thank you!

There are several areas where we need your help to make this year a success. Please keep reading to find out how you can be a part of your child’s school.

Concessions - We are in need of a parent volunteer to head concessions. Concession sales are a large part of the budget for the PTSA and without them we may not be able to do some of the fun things planned for this year. We are currently looking for someone who can make sure there are volunteers to work the concession stand for each home game. Currently, we sell concessions during the 7th & 8th grade girls volleyball games and will also sell during the season. This person would also help to make sure there is an ample supply of concessions to sell.

- If you aren’t interested in being in charge of concessions, maybe you’d consider volunteering a few hours of your time to run the concession stand during a game. There are only a few volleyball games left and I will send a separate email with the dates. If you are interested and available to help, please let me know. I know you time is valuable and I certainly appreciate it! Book Fair

- Thank you Nora Black & Cindy Steinbrick for volunteering to chair the Garfield Book Fair! Your help is greatly appreciated. Nora & Cindy will need lots of volunteers so stay tuned for more information and see the following “Save The Date” flyer for more details. Reflections

- Thank you to Kim Walcheck for volunteering her time to be the Reflections Chair for Garfield this year! Reflections is a cultural arts program through the National PTA. It allows students in preschool through grade 12 to create and submit original works of art in six areas: literature, visual arts, photography, dance choreography, film production & music composition. The Reflections program allows PTAs throughout the state to recognize children for their creativity as they reflect on a yearly theme. This year the theme is “Heroes Around Me”. Stay tuned for more information from Kim regarding this program. We would love to see lots of submissions from our talented Garfield students this year!

Fall Halloween Dance - Mark your calendars now for the PTSA sponsored Garfield Middle School Fall Dance on October 26th at 6:30pm! This is the first of 3 PTSA sponsored dances for the middle schoolers and we’d love to see all your kids there.

- In order to make it a success, we need your help! Please consider donating your time if you can the night of the dance. If you can’t donate your time, please consider donating items to the concession stand. 100% of the proceeds from the dance go directly to the school!

Scholastic Book Fair November 5th – November 9th

Reading is the most important skill you can teach a child. Of all the skills kids learn, it is the one YOU can influence the most.

We invite you to visit our Enchanted Forest of Books Scholastic Book Fair and experience a celebration of reading that provides families the opportunity to get involved in a universal mission: encouraging kids to read every day so they can lead better lives.

Our Book Fair is part of a reading event that brings to school a wonderful selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books kids want to read. Giving kids access to good books, and the opportunity to choose books will motivate them to read more. And like most acquired skills, the more kids practice reading, the better they’ll get.

Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and Volunteer to Help. We can’t make this a success for Garfield without you! Please contact Kristen Moran at [email protected] if you are interested in helping.

Getting Involved at Garfield is Easy and Painless! Join PTSA for only $7.00 per person and Donate to our Painless Project….. It’s That Simple!

The support of our parents, students, staff and community is a key component to the success of Garfield Middle School. Joining the PTSA is a great way to be involved, to learn what is happening at Garfield and show your support.

Because we are part of the National PTA organization, we pay dues to remain in good standing and are able to have a voice and help with advocacy in Washington. PTA is always standing up for our children! From better testing, better school lunches, to taking a stand on bullying, the list goes on and on. If you have the time, you may learn more at ohiopta.org.

Out of the $7.00 membership fee, Garfield PTSA only accounts for $2.25 once the membership fee is paid to Ohio PTA. As you can see, that is not enough money to continue all that we do for Garfield. That’s where the Painless Project comes in. Any donation makes a huge difference to our bottom line!

Your Garfield PTSA Membership and Painless Project Dollars at Work:

Student Dances – All profits go back to Garfield MS for their Student Account. Student PTSA members have FREE admission into 3 dances per school year (excludes 8th Grade Dance)

Español 1 Octubre 2018

¿ Qué tal amigos? Ask your children in Spanish to explain a few things they are learning. We are soon to be mastering the difficult verb GUSTAR. It works much like the English word disgust: Okra disgusts me. Separate the prefix dis- and you have gust. So if okra disgusts me, then ice cream gusts me. Therefore, me gusta el helado. But it is a new habit of thinking and language production that stymies kids off and on until it is embedded into their new language field. We will see this verb at least 2 more times this year. Language is like a pot of stew on the burner simmering. It must be stirred regularly in order to keep the contents from burning.

We also have a few lists of food vocabulary that are essential for daily language. Please remind your student to revisit vocabulary lists each day for 10 minutes EVEN WHEN THERE IS NO HOMEWORK. It can be as simple as reading and saying the words, having a family member quiz the student on the lists, labeling items in the house, using one of many online games or practice websites to master the material: quia.com claszone.com studyspanish.com spanishspanish.com cram.com conjuguemos.com quizlet.com lizardpoint.com kahoot.com

What is important is that the students look at vocabulary etc. as necessary daily activity.

By Thanksgiving, SP 1 students will have learned the simple past tense (the most difficult verb tense for SP 1 and 2 students) in Spanish and will have to write sentences using the past tense as well as food vocabulary during the break. It will be a journal where 50 words per day for three of the five days will be typed. Thank you for your continuous support of your child’s learning! It is a true pleasure to have student who are interested and eager to learn.

Notes from Miss Erin Costello, our student teacher:

Hola a todos! I am student teaching in Mr. Corrigan’s Spanish 1 classroom through October 20th. I am not a native Spanish-speaker, but studied Spanish through high school, college, and abroad in Guatemala. With Mr. Corrigan’s support, our class is exploring lessons that teach vocabulario (vocab), verbos (verbs or actions), conversación (conversation), and empezamos a escribir (we’re beginning to write in Spanish). To support your child’s success, I am also asking them to study for 10 MINUTES each day.

I am enjoying teaching in your child’s class! Gracias!

Gracias! Señor Corrigan [email protected] DID YOU KNOW: Last year, 2017, the U.S.A. became the second largest Spanish speaking country, second only to Mexico. More than 648,493 people in Ohio speak languages other than English (MLA Language Map and US Census 2004) Each year 200,000 Americans lose out on jobs with business because they do not know another language. (Tongue Tied Americans, 2001) Students who know more than one language achieve higher scores in all area subjects tested. (College Board, 2001)
