Before the Kessler Plan of 1907, had created a major park in what is now known as Uptown-. This provided a retreat from the heat, filth and poor air quality of The Downtown Basin and a focal point for the city’s early suburbs. Kessler added to the ensem- ble by proposing a series of connected parks along the edge of the plateau overlooking the city.
