Zumtobel Group Strives for Carbon Neutrality by 2025 01 Further step: electricity from hydropower

Dornbirn, – The is taking a further step towards climate neutrality within the context of its increased focus on the issue of sustainability. Effective March 1, 2021, all of the company’s Austrian sites will derive 100% of their electricity from hydropower. Assuming the same operating performance and compared to the previous energy mix, this transition to hydroelectric power will reduce the global CO2 emissions of the Zumtobel Group by 1,500 tonnes annually in reference to the relevant environmental data for the 2019/20 financial year.

“We are working intensively on further accelerating our sustainability efforts. In this regard, our top priorities are promoting a circular economy and reducing our carbon footprint. The responsible use of material resources as well as the minimisation of waste, emissions and energy consumption are of vital importance to us. The Zumtobel Group is clearly moving further ahead towards climate-neutral business operations by converting to electricity from hydropower, at first for our Austrian facilities”, says Alfred Felder, CEO of the Zumtobel Group.

Net-zero emissions for electricity needs As a consequence of the changeover to hydroelectric power, the Zumtobel Group now features net-zero emissions for its electricity consumption through Austria. Furthermore, a photovoltaic plant featuring 4,500 solar panels located at corporate headquarters at the Schweizerstrasse site in Dornbirn feeds all the required electricity directly into the factory grid – generating 1,238 MWh over the last twelve months. This corresponds to the average annual consumption of about 300 households.

All these activities enable the Zumtobel Group to support a more positive CO2 scorecard and also contribute towards achieving the planned long-term energy autonomy of the Federal Province of by the year 2050. The Zumtobel Group’s next step will be to evaluate the emissions reduction potential of CO2-neutral electricity for the company’s facilities abroad.
