3 Welcome from the conference Chair

Professor M. Hattab Université de Lorraine, Metz, France On behalf of the Steering Committee, the Local Organizing Committee and the International Scientific Committee, I would like to welcome you to the Université de Lorraine, at the Campus of Ile du Saulcy-Metz, site of the second International Conference, after the 2015 conference at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University that the Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) organized outside the United States. This important event will be taking place for the first tim e in Europe. 2016 EMI International Conference feature about 320 oral presentations in the 24 Mini-Symposia organized in parallel sessions. The participants come from 36 countries in the six continents , with impressive participation of young researchers and PhD students who will have a great opportunity to exchange on an international platform. The Plenary Keynote lectures by six distinguished research leaders come from International Universities, the contributions will cover the most challenging fields i n the context of Engineering Mechanics and Materials Science. In addition, several large mini-symposia will start with keynote presentations by leading researchers in the mini-symposia topics. Large areas of research will be discussed during the conference in the different Mini-symposia, including: Porous Media, Severe Plastic Deformation, Damage and Failure, Biomechanics, Biomaterials, Granular Mechanics, Uncertainty Quantification, Non-Linear Dynamics, Instability and Bifurcations, Multiscale Modeling, Co mposite Materials and Structures, Creep and Relaxation Mechanics, Cementitious Materials, Geomechanics, Confined Structures, Laterites Clayey Soils, Model Order Reduction, and Modeling and Testing of Infrastructure. A special Mini-Symposium in honor of Professor Yannis Dafalias, on the occasion of his 70 th birthday will provide an excellent opportunity for exchanges in the field of Constitutive Modeling of Engineering Materials. I would like to take this opportunity to warmly thank who worked hard to superv ise the conference. First, the Logistics Committee members for their invaluable assistance and their high efficiency: Nathalie Kasprzak, the webmaster for the conference, for her generous efforts. She has been a key pillar in the logistics organization and a real chair’s right-hand. Roxane Massion for her pleasant cooperation and her work to make the Social Events in an enjoyable atmosphere; Jacqueline Decker and Anne-Martine Blum for the hard logistics work; M ohamad Jrad, Guillaume Robin, Slim Bahi and Julien Oury for their strong support. Dear Participants of the 2016 EMI International Conference: On behalf of the Board of Governors of the Engineering Mechanics Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers, it is my honor to welcome you to the 2016 EMI International Conference. It follows last year’s EMI international conference held at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and is set to be our largest yet. The success of this conference is a testament to the hard work of the Conference Chair and the Local Organizing Committee, and to the commitment at all levels of EMI to make our community the hub for mechanics at the interface of science, engineering and society. I thank Professor Mahdia Hattab and her colleagues, and the University of Lorraine for hosting this year’s EMI international conference which as of the writing of this message is reaching new heights, with over 400 registrations, and participants from nearly 40 countries making it a truly international event. Many thanks also to the organizations who sponsored this event: the LEM3 Laboratory, the Grand Est Region, and the Metz Metropole ANDRA agency and the Mechanics learned societies (AFM, CSMA). The ever-increasing attendance at the EMI events reflects the fact that our Institute enjoys the worldwide reputation of being the premier venue for mechanics in civil engineering. As I am starting my second year as President of EMI, I am happy to report that our Institute is thriving; thanks to the dedication and hard work of the Board of Governors, the EMI staff, the technical committees and its members from around the globe. In addition to the vibrant technical programs offered over the past nine years at EMI conferences, our Institute has experienced a healthy increase in its membership and in the reputation of the ASCE Journal of Engineering Mechanics and the ASCE Journal of Nanomechanics and Micromechanics. I invite you to be actively involved in your Institute and engaged in its activities. Opportunities include the delivery of webinars, the writing of new volumes for the Lecture Notes in Mechanics series, active participation on committees that organize conference sessions, ideas on how to increase EMI-industry collaboration, and seeking leadership roles on committees. I am extremely confident that under the leadership of its Board of Governors, EMI will continue along its successful path. Tuesday, October 25, 2016 - Ice Breaker 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm Saint Pierre-aux Nonnains 1, Rue de la Citadelle Metz Meet the 2016 EMI-IC participants, enjoy the wine and cheese apperitif in this fantastic pre-medieval church. It began life as a Roman gymnasium in the 4th century AD, making it one of the oldest churches in Europe. In the 16th century, the building became a warehouse, and remained so until the 1970s, when it was restored and opened for concerts and exhibitions.

Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - Banquet/Concert 7:30 pm – 11:00 pm Abbaye des Prémontrés Pont-Mousson For Full and Guest Registration only (or separate ticket required). Join us in a convivial athmosphere with 2016EMI-IC participants, Organizers and EMI members. The banquet will take place in a prestigious building of one of the greatest religious ordersof the middle ages. L’Abbaye des Prémontrés represented by among others the Cistercians and the Benedictines, the Norbertine order, founded by Saint Norbert in 1121 near Laon contributed strongly to the religious and spiritual history of Lorraine, until the 17th century. L’Abbaye becames a Historical Building in 1910. It belonged to the State, then was given to the city in 1912. It became a civil hospice until 1944.

6:45 pm – 7:00 pm: BUSES TO THE BANQUET L’abbaye des Prémontrés is located at Pont à Mousson at about 30 km from Metz. The departures to the banquet will be provided by buses. The place departure will be at Cathédrale de Metz at 6 :45 pm, the last bus from Cathédrale de Metz at 7.00 pm. After the Banquet, the first departure from L’abbaye des Prémontrés to Metz will be at 10:00 pm, the last departure around 11h30 pm after the concert. Maître de Cérémonie Michel Potier -Ferry has obtained the diploma of Ecole Polytechnique in 1972 . His PhD was obtained at Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris 6) in 1978 (doctorat d'état according to the old french system). The title was "Mathematical foundations of elastic stability theory" and Georges Duvaut was the advisor. He teaches since 1972, first as Assistant professor at Université Pierre et Marie Curie and Ecole Polytechnique. He became professor at the University of Metz in 1985. He was the head of organizing committees of several big conferences (Congrès Français de Mécanique 1989, European Solid Mechanics Conference 2000). He held various positions in his university (e.g. vice-president for research), in the ministry of research and in French academic societies (president of Association Universitaire de Mécanique, vice-president of Association Française de Mécanique). He published more than 170 papers in peer-reviewed journals and was advisor of 45 PhD theses.

PLENARY LECTURE Alain MOLINARI Laboratoire d'Etude des Microstructures et de Mécanique des Matériaux (LEM3) CNRS UMR 7239 - Université de Lorrain, France

Alain Molinari born in Lorraine, was graduated at the University of Strasbourg (MS) and University of Metz (PhD). He is professor of solid mechanics at the University of Lorraine and was half-time professeur chargé de cours at Ecole Polytechnique during 14 years. His work on high strain rate phenomena was initiated during a sabbatical leave at Brown University (Providence, USA) in 1981. When coming back to France, he was one of the two founders of the Laboratory of Physics and Mechanics of Materials (now LEM3) at the University of Metz. He has worked on various fields of solid mechanics. His research on high strain phenomena comprises the theoretical analysis of dynamic failure by strain localization (dynamic necking and adiabatic shearing), the multiscale modeling of dynamic damage. The multiscale approaches that he proposed for the modeling of the viscoplastic response of polycrystalline materials are used worldwide and applied to materials such as metals, semi-crystalline polymers and geo-materials (ice and rocks). He was invited professor in Brown University (Providence), the California Institute of Technology (Caltech, Pasadena), the Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore), in Europe, the Hamburg-Harburg University (Germany), the Institute of Fundamental Studies of Warsaw (IPPT), the Institute of Mathematics of Bucharest (Roumania) and also in Australia: the University of Western Australia (Perth), Monash University (Melbourne). He was awarded Millikan distinguished professor at Caltech (California, 1996), distinguished scholar and Gledden Senior Fellow at the University of Western Australia (1995 and 1997), was awarded a chair of excellence at the University Carlos III of Madrid (2009 and 2011). In 2012 he received the John Rinehart award for his work on high strain rate phenomena. He is author and co-author of about 200 research papers and co-editor of one book.

Damage and failure of ductile materials under dynamic conditions

Failure of metallic materials under dynamic loading is an important issue when considering security of structures (impact, explosive loading) or when dealing with high speed forming processes in manufacturing industries. Under such extreme conditions, the damage mechanisms leading to fracture are not only influenced by the rheological properties of the material but appear to be also very much affected by inertia effects which are taking place at the microscopic level. One of the most common mechanism of ductile fracture is related to nucleation, growth and coalescence of micro-voids. It is the scope of this presentation to propose a theoretical approach of this mode of failure for metallic materials subjected to fast processes and to unravel the fundamental role of micro-scale inertia in the failure process. The presentation will start with a brief review of inertia effects on the development of localized modes of failure such as dynamic necking and shear banding. The following of the talk will focus on dynamic damage by micro-voiding. A multiscale modelling of dynamic failure is proposed and a review of results reached in the last ten years is presented, including the following aspects: ° role of micro-inertia on the evolution of damage ° modeling of the phase of stable void growth, contrast with classical quasistatic models ° effect of the void shape ° flow surfaces and unusual effects due to micro-inertia ° final stage of damage evolution: the void coalescence process ° spalling: theoretical approach and experimental validation ° dynamic fracture: crack growth and fracture toughness ° regularizing effects of inertia at the microscale, natural emergence of material length scales and positive outcomes on mesh sensitivity in finite element calculations Finally, some open questions will be exposed.

PLENARY LECTURE Stefanie REESE

Stefanie Reese finished her studies of Civil Engineering at the Leibniz University Hannover (Germany) with the diploma in 1990. Her PhD examination took place at Darmstadt University of Technology under the supervision of Prof. Peter Wriggers (1994). After two fruitful research stays at the University of California at Berkeley (USA) and at the University of Capetown (South Africa) she became assistant professor in Darmstadt, Hannover and finally associate professor (2000) at the Ruhr University Bochum (Germ any). In the following ten years she obtained offers for full professorships from Braunschweig University of Technology (2005), RWTH Aachen University (2009), both in Germany, and from ETH Zurich (Switzerland). Today, she is head of the Institute of Applie d Mechanics at RWTH Aachen University. Stefanie is author of more than 300 publications and holds several important positions in the international science community. Since 2015 she is treasurer of the European Mechanics Society.

Tissue-engineered textile-reinforced aortic heart valves –multiscale modeling and experimental validation

Physiologically haemocompatible, biological and mechanical implants, equivalent to the native aortic heart valves are in development as an alternative to mechanical prostheses. To achieve su fficient mechanical strength for application in tissue-engineered valves exposed to the systemic circulation, the tissue is re-inforced by a textile sca ffold. Mechanical testing of tissue-engineered heart valves is expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, the current study seeks to predict the behaviour of textile reinforced artificial heart valves using a multi-scale modelling approach. For this purpose, the complex textile structure is divided into simplified models at di fferent scales. Virtual experiments are conducted on each of these scales and their response is fitted by appropriate isotropic and anisotropic hyperelastic material models. The textile response is then used in a macro heart valve model, which is subjected to dynamic cardiac loading. It is shown that the current modelling approach is in good agreement with the real valve behaviour.

Wednesday, October 26, 2016 Maître de Cérémonie Pierre -Yves Hicher is currently Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering at Ecole Centrale de Nantes and former Director of the Regional Institute for Research in Civil Engineering and Construction, after having served as Director of the Research Institute in Civil and Mechanical Engineering, UMR CNRS-Ecole Centrale Nantes-University of Nantes. His principal research activity and publications lie in the field of the mechanical behaviour of soils and granular materials, where major contributions to developing a methodology for connecting macroscopic properties to the micro structure of heterogeneous materials can be found. He has also contributed to the knowledge of material properties under complex loading paths by developing original experimental procedures and parameter identification methods under inverse analysis techniques. Recently, he has proposed homogenization techniques adapted to disordered granular materials in the modelling of their mechanical behaviour. They are applied to the analysis of instability and collapse in granular materials, to the size effect in coarse granular materials and its application to rockfill dams, as well as to the impact of Pierre-Yves Hicher internal erosion on the stability of hydraulic works (dams, dykes, levees). He is the author and Emeritus Professor, co-author of more than 80 papers in international journals and has published several books F. EMI on his research topics. He has supervised 42 PhD theses.

Gilles Pijaudier-Cabot graduated from Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan (ENSC) in 1983. He obtained a doctoral degree from Université Pierre et Marie Curie (1984) and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University (1987). He joined CNRS in 1988 and later on the faculty of civil engineering of Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan in 1992. At ENSC, he developed computational tools for evaluating the integrity of concrete structures. His research turned toward durability mechanics of concrete in 1999 when he moved to Ecole Centrale de Nantes. In 2007, Gilles Pijaudier- Cabot joined Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour and the joint laboratory with CNRS and TOTAL which he directed until recently, along with the Institut Carnot ISIFoR. His work focuses today on coupled problems in geomechanics. Gilles Pijaudier-Cabot authored over 120 refereed papers and received an advanced grant from the European Research Council in 2008. He is senior member of Institut Universitaire de France (IUF).

Fracture, deformation and fluid-solid coupled effects in porous quasi-brittle materials

This presentation reviews recent results obtained within the geomechanics group of LFCR dealing with fracture, permeability and adsorption effects in porous quasi-brittle materials.

We follow a descending scale approach and start from the issues involved in hydraulic fracturing problems. A lattice approach to this problem is discussed and compared with analytical results. The model considers the propagation of damage in a poroelastic material. Therefore, it provides a rather general framework. As an example, the interactions between a propagating crack and an existing joint in the rock mass are considered for several orientations of the joint with respect to the crack.

A critical scientific issue in the previous calculations is the effect of microcracking on the permeability of the material. We look at this problem by considering the pore size distribution of the material and the way it evolves as damage due to microcracking grows. Experimental results are provided and an analytical capillary model that combines Poiseuille flow with Knudsen diffusion provides the correct evolutions of the intrinsic and apparent permeability to gas for various damage states. This model is currently being extended to the unsaturated case where the relative permeability to liquid and vapour need to be derived.

Finally, going down at the nanoscale, adsorption effects are considered. These effects are sensitive in microporous materials – for pore sizes of a few nanometers. Adsorption and confinement of the fluid yields very high pore pressure, which in return may generate volumetric deformation of the porous materials. Experiments in which adsorption and swelling are simultaneously recorded are discussed. Poromechanics is extended in order to account for adsorption effects in the mechanical problem and adsorption isotherms may also be computed using DFT based approach. Models aim at providing an approach that is free of phenomenological relationships as far as coupled adsorption/swelling effects are concerned.

PLENARY LECTURE Nicolas MOËS GeM - Institut de Recherche en Génie Civil et Mécanique, UMR CNRS 6183, Ecole Centrale de Nantes, France

Nicolas Moës is full professor at the Ecole Centrale de Nantes (France) and researcher the GeM (a CNRS research institute for civil and mechanical engineering). He received his engineering degree from the University of Liège and his PhD from the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan under the guidance of Pierre Ladevèze. He is one of the co-inventor of the eXtended Finite Element Method (X-FEM). This work was initiated during his post-doctoral stay at Northwestern University in the team of Ted Belytschko. More recently, he has been developing with colleagues at Nantes a new model lying between fracture and damage mechanics coined the thick level set approach (TLS) as well as a new approach for contact. He received the young investigator award from the IACM (International Association for computational Mechanics) in 2006 and was declared IACM fellow in 2008. In 2014, he received the silver medal from CNRS.

The Thick Level Set (TLS) damage model for quasi-brittle fracture: an overview

The TLS model was designed to allow for a smooth transition to fracture. It is not a smeared crack model because displacements are truly discontinuous across surfaces in which the material is fully broken. Yet, it belongs to the family of the non-local damage models because it introduces a material length.

The twist in the TLS is that it incorporates geometrical aspects: the shape of the strain localization zone is located by a boundary and within the localization zone, the cracks faces are simply located by a level set.

So far, most of the effort have been concentrated to quasi-brittle fracture. After restating the motivations for the new model, we review the results obtained in these past 5 years. Among other topics the following issues will be addressed:

° Capability of the model to reproduce properly size effects ° Predictive capabilities for crack onsets at notches ° Theoretical issues regarding boundary conditions (with practical consequences!) ° Capability of the model to take into account concurrent local and non-local development of damage ° Comparison with other non-local damage models ° Relationships with the cohesive zone model

Finally, a set of open issues will be detailed.

Thursday, October 27, 2016 Maître de Cérémonie Matthieu V andamme received his Ph.D. from the Civil and Environmental Engineering department at MIT (Cambridge, MA) in 2008, for a study of the creep properties of cementitious materials by nanoindentation. He is also engineer from Ecole Polytechnique (France) and from École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (France), and received an M.S. in solid mechanics from École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in 2002. He was awarded the 2016 EMI Leonardo da Vinci Award. Since 2008, he has been working at Laboratoire Navier (ENPC, CNRS, IFSTTAR) at École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées. He performs Materials Science applied to materials relevant for Civil and Petroleum Engineering (i.e., cementitious materials, coal, clay-based materials…). PLENARY LECTURE Muhammad R. HAJJ Virginia Tech, USA

Muhammad R. Hajj is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics and the Associate Dean of the Graduate School at Virginia Tech. He is also the Director of the Center for Energy Harvesting Materials and Systems (CEHMS). This center is a consortium of major research universities, industry partners and commercial and government organizations and is sponsored through the National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers (I/UCRC) program with the aim of developing interdisciplinary strengths in science and technology issues related to the sustainable development of energy solutions. He has advised 22 PhD students to completion and is currently advising six PhD students. He has given keynote and invited lectures at several international workshops and conferences. Dr. Hajj is a Fellow of the Engineering Mechanics Institute. Dr. Hajj received a B. Eng. degree (with distinction) from the American University of Beirut in 1983. He received a M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Texas at Austin in 1985 and 1990. He joined Virginia Tech in 1992 after spending two years as a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of Texas at Austin.

Nonlinear Dynamics of Piezoelectric Energy Harvesters of Aeroelastic and Ambient Vibrations In general, ambient and aeroelastic vibrations are undesirable. On the other hand, they have been considered as energy sources that can be harvested and used to operate low-power consumption devices, such as sensors and actuators or replace small batteries that have a finite life span or would require hard and expensive maintenance. Of the different options, which include electromagnetic, electrostatic, and piezoelectric transduction, the piezoelectric one has received significant consideration because of its capability to harvest energy over a wide range of frequencies, its ease of application, and integration in a small volume.

In this talk, we show that nonlinear response behaviors can be exploited to harvest energy effectively from different systems. After presenting shortcomings of harvesting energy from vortex-induced vibrations, galloping structures and fluttering wings, we show how aerodynamically induced large deformations reduce the flutter speed of a cantilever beam. Particularly, in an experimental setup, we subject a flexible composite beam, held at static angle of attack at the beam root, to airflow. This setup has the advantage of dispensing of the secondary structure needed to induce the beam vibration as in previous setups. By setting the beam at a non-zero angle of attack, it is subjected to a differential aerodynamic loading, which results in a uniform static deflection. When this deflection is large enough, the geometric nonlinearities affect the beam's stiffness and induce a change in its natural frequencies, which, in turn cause the torsional and second bending frequencies to coalesce. This coalescence results in self-induced flutter of the beam. Beyond this bifurcation, the combination of the static deflection and geometric and aerodynamic nonlinearities causes sustained limit-cycle oscillations that can be efficiently exploited for energy harvesting. We also present new structural concepts where nonlinearities have been exploited for the purpose of harvesting ambient energy from a broad range of frequencies.

Fabio Nobile is associate professor in Mathematics at the Ecole Polytechique Federale de Lausanne, Switzerland, since 2011. Previously he has been assistant professor in at Politecnico di Milano. He graduated in electronic engineering a t Politecnico di Milano in 1998; PhD in Applied Mathematics at EPFL in 2001; 2 years post-doc position (ICES fellowship) at ICES, University of Texas at Austin. Invited speaker to several international conferences and workshops, including the 7th European Congress of Mathematics 7ECM in 2016. Co-Chair and main organizer of the SIAM UQ16 conference, EPFL. Awarded the second prize at the 12th Leslie Fox Prize in 2005. He is author of more than 60 publications on international journals. He is member of the editorial board of 4 international journals. His main research activity is in numeric al approximation of PDEs with stochastic coefficients, sparse approximation techniques, numerical solution of fluid-structure interaction problems, simulation of the cardiovascular system.

Stochastic collocation methods for PDEs with random coefficients

Partial differential equations with random coefficients and input data (random PDEs in short) arise in many applications in which the data of the PDE need be described in terms of random variables/fields due either to a lack of knowledge of the system or to its inherent non-predictability. It has been shown that the dependence of the solution to the random parameters can be effectively approximated by carefully chosen multivariate polynomials (generalized polynomial chaos - gPC - expansion) even in high dimension for certain classes of problems. In this talk we present ways to build gPC approximations based on evaluations of the PDE on deterministic or random collocation points in parameter space, which require therefore only parallel calls to a black-box solver. We discuss, in particular, the construction of collocation schemes suitable for distributed random fields and infinite dimensional probability spaces. We will also discuss how these collocation schemes in parameter space, can be optimally combined with hierarchical spatial/temporal discretizations of the underlying PDE to considerably reduce the overall computational cost for a given accuracy level.
