Recommends Howard’s way When: March 24 Comic Russell Howard is back on the road for the first time in three years with his biggest tour to date. Here he is on everything from sex toys to social media (not necessarily at the same time…)

On what to expect from his new show, Round the World: “Death, love, depression, self-harm, ISIS, Trump, unicorns and my nan and granddad dying. It’s pretty full on, but it’s funny.” On social media: “If I got into Twitter I’d expose myself to people who adore me and people who hate me. Neither of those are useful to my soul.” On questions from the audience: “A lady asked me whether I thought astronauts engaged in solo sexual activity in space; there was an astronaut in the crowd and he confirmed that they did.” On his mum’s bucket list: “I asked her if she’d got a bucket list, and she said: ‘Well, I just want to be in an old folks home where they don’t hate you…’” On crashing and burning with his first joke of the night: “There was utter silence. It was the worst feeling in the world. You come off and go: ‘What happened? I’ve lost my powers’.” On being famous: “Recently I was an answer on the quiz show Egg Heads. The question was, ‘which comedian presents the show Good News?’ It was one of those weird moments where even my dog looked at me and was like, ‘you d***head!” On the strangest heckle he’s ever had: “A woman threw a sex toy at me, which begs the question, how little faith do you have in the evening ahead to bring a dildo in your handbag?”

16 17 WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK SHE’S A GEM!

Recommends Jewel in the toon When: March 29 She has a voice like velvet, wears vintage with aplomb, and she’s our new obsession. As she heads into town, here’s why we can’t get enough of Dutch chanteuse Caro Emerald...

Her new tour features jungle sounds mixed with her quirky brand of pop/jazz to create a fantastically idiosyncratic show.

Clearly, she’s doing something right, having sold 2.5m records to date, had 40m+ YouTube views and performed to great acclaim at Glastonbury.

Which means she’s come a loooong way since her first album, Deleted Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor. It features ballroom jazz, tangos and mambos infused with a vintage Hollywood vibe and spent 30 weeks at #1 in the Dutch album charts, setting an all-time record.

Caro’s also quite the campaigner, notably for the Dutch organisation Plan Nederland, which educates girls and reduces stigma surrounding menstruation in Africa.

She’s always looking for new projects and has said she’d like to collaborate with New York pop polymath Lana Del Rey.

And she loves the UK, which she says has “the highest quality music in the world”.

On stage, she says she feels she can be larger than life, and we say she looks amazing in a 1950s gown and a beret. What’s not to like?
