DEAR FRIENDS:

How do we decide which dog is matched with which student?

It’s not as simple as the next student getting the next dog, or matching them based on their names. (Yes, it really was a coincidence that a former police officer was matched with a Seeing Eye dog named Copper, that a lifelong New York Yankees fan went home with a dog named Clipper, and that the best partner for a student named Jane proved to be a dog named Tarzan!)

In fact, making the match is as much an art as it is a science. We walk with each applicant, with an instructor holding the other end of a harness handle, to assess his or her preferences when it comes to pace, pull, and pep. (Some students prefer a slow and steady Seeing Eye dog, while others want a speed demon!) We also consider another “P”: Personality. It’s true! Over the four months of training, our instructors quickly get to know each dog’s unique characteristics. Some dogs love the hustle and bustle of city life, while others are more at home in the peace and quiet of the country. A dog that can quickly settle down for a long nap could be the right fit for a college student or an executive with lots of meetings, but a mom with a trio of toddlers would prefer a dog who can keep up with her busy schedule. All these factors are considered before that poignant moment when dog and student are introduced for the first time.

A match really is magic.

*Graduate of The Seeing Eye THE SEEING EYE ANNUAL REPORT 2015 05 Tony Taliani returned to The Seeing Eye in July 2015 to be matched with his second Seeing Eye dog, a German shepherd named Ichabod.

“A week before we moved to Columbus last June, my first Seeing Eye dog passed away suddenly,” Tony said. “I was nervous because we were moving to a big city, and I knew I would need to rely on public transportation and being independent since my wife started a demanding new job as a resident physician at Ohio State. Luckily, I was able to get into a class at The Seeing Eye within a few weeks of moving to our new city. When I first met Ichabod, I cried like a baby because I felt the sadness of losing my first dog and the joy of meeting a new partner all at once. Ichabod quickly greeted me by licking the tears off of my face.”

Tony is a high school English teacher in Columbus, Ohio, and he said Ichabod is a perfect fit for his classroom. “He sleeps in a soft crate during my instructional day, and he gets to have a break in the middle of the day when I have lunch,” he said. “He doesn’t make a sound, and the kids forget about him most of the time.”

THE SEEING EYE ANNUAL REPORT 2015 19 Brad Hart is a retired elementary school principal, but he stays pretty busy: he serves on his former school’s board of directors, volunteers once a week at an elementary school, is president of the Spring Township (Pennsylvania) Lions Club, is president of his local chapter of the National Federation of the Blind, and is married with five children!

Brad came to The Seeing Eye in January 2015 to be matched with his first Seeing Eye dog, a yellow Lab/ golden cross named Tony.

“Tony gives me the confidence I need to travel independently and to be confident in my involvement in the community,” Brad said. “When the harness is on, Tony is strictly business, but when the harness is off, he lives the dreamy life of being a playful, lovable puppy. Tony is a great friend and one I know I can count on in life.”

Dr. Jennifer Harnish is the Director of Rehabilitation Services for the Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton, Massachusetts. She came to The Seeing Eye in September 2015 to be matched with her second Seeing Eye dog, a black Labrador/ golden retriever cross named Agnes.

“Agnes presents such a professional appearance when I speak in my work role on behalf of blindness rehabilitation services. I also love being an active mother of three with Agnes by my side during school events, our family downhill ski trip, and walking with my kids to community activities. They are free to roam without concerns for my safety now that Agnes is by my side,” Jennifer said. “And I love the safety, speed, and return to a daily commute to work that includes five miles of walking round-trip. I have never been so healthy!”

Shae Lake is studying to become a special education technician at Collège Boréal in Sudbury, Ontario. She came to The Seeing Eye in August 2015 to be matched with her first Seeing Eye dog, a yellow Labrador retriever named Hallie.

“Hallie has made my life so much simpler!” she said. “I have gained so much independence with her that I can’t imagine myself ever using a cane again. With this independence, I have also gained self confidence in myself and have found myself more adventurous in my daily routines. Hallie has changed my life and I can’t even begin to express how much I appreciate everything The Seeing Eye has done.”

For the third straight year, The Seeing Eye posted stories about our graduates on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/SeeingEye during the month of October, which is Blindness Awareness Month, and then printed the collection of stories in a magazine called Partners: Tales From The Seeing Eye.

One of the featured graduates this year was Phil Levin, an attorney from Manchester, Maryland. Phil was a very active person before he lost his vision, and remains one. “I’ve run the Boston Marathon, I’ve gone skiing, I’ve cut down trees, I fix fences on our farm,” Phil said. “I fall sometimes. And then I get up. With Fred I can walk the same speed I did 25 years ago, and that is priceless,” he said.
