Comfort Design Information THE NATURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF QUALITY LEATHER

QUALITY LEATHER FOR A QUALITY LIFESTYLE!

Congratulations on your purchase of a natural product. Real leather is a natural product. It breathes, is warm and has individual characteristics which make each unique. Leather will always bear the marks of its natural origin and these characteristics can show as healed scars, neck growth marks and areas of differing fiber density and hair pore structure.

These hallmarks in no way detract from the wearing qualities of the leather. They are signs discerning owners cherish when buying leather. With the passing of time and use, it develops a patina which enhances its beauty.

SHADE VARIATION No two hides are alike and due to the varying grain structure mentioned below the and finishes penetrate to differing degrees in different parts of the hide to give an attractive variation. While every attempt is made to achieve uniformity this is not always possible.

It must be remembered that no two hides are alike and it is impossible, due to various textures and the requirements for at least eight hides to make a suite, to guarantee a perfect match. Patterns, therefore, should be regarded as no more than a guide to the color.

Due to the unpredictable nature of each hide the natural variation that exists within that hide, leather cutting is a skilled job. Waste must be kept to a minimum while selected use of certain areas of each hide for different purposes must be considered.

In general it is normal practice to put clusters of scars or areas of rough grain on the outside backs and arms. Belly areas, due to their greater stretchiness should be avoided on seating areas. Tighter grained areas around the butt and backbone are favored for those areas receiving the greatest amount of wear. Ideally leather cutting to achieve an economical price as just described is not always possible and the tanner must try to minimize the variations whenever possible in his processing. At the same time the manufacturer through the retailer or dealer must try to emphasize the significance of these hallmarks and their positive contribution to the appearance and performance of leather.

Leather now, due to modern processes, has a much softer glove-like feel and maintains its suppleness during the life of the furniture. Likewise cushions and arms are much softer and luxurious, quite different from the older, firmer materials. The combination of these two factors means that during the first few weeks of use, wrinkles and creases will form naturally in the leather. These are quite normal and should cause no concern. They are designed into the furniture and give it a soft inviting look which is an inherent quality of the piece of leather upholstery. SCARS These form usually as a result of barbed wire damage, disease, infestation or by the horns of other . In their healed form the new skin is as strong as the remainder of the hide but unhealed damage should be avoided as tension on these parts may cause the leather to split or burst.

STRETCH MARKS Stretch marks appear in cowhide for the same reasons they do in humans. The process of calving requires the stretching of the skin to accommodate the new calf. Nothing could be more natural.

GROWTH MARKS and VEINS These are an indication of the age of the animal and in that respect are similar to the graining on a piece of timber. They range from often quite pronounced marks in the neck area to subtle bands across the hide perpendicular to the backbone which are often seen on natural full grain . Heavy growth marks are often placed on the outside backs of seating.

GRAIN VARIATION The fiber texture varies greatly from being loose in the belly and flank areas to being relatively tight across the backbone. The looser areas consequently have more stretch. This variation in hair pore structure is particularly noticeable in un-textured leathers. Other variations in grain pattern occur during the life of the animal. Dung marks for example, which are a feature of cattle kept indoors during the winter months, give rise to areas of rough or burnished grain which can produce a matt effect even with bright finishes.

NECK WRINKLES So that the steer will have the flexibility needed to move its head while grazing, the skin located on its neck is full and loose. As the neck stretches and contracts, wrinkles naturally occur in the hide. (Not unlike many of us.)

BACKBONE These natural furrows appear along the backbone of all hides. Again, due to the animal’s physiology, they are your proof of a natural full grain hide.

GRAINING Graining, like human fingerprints, is unique to each individual hide, and is the hallmark of quality full-grain leather hides.

BRANDING MARKS Although seldom found on finished furniture, the branding marks are a part of virtually every hide. THE LANGUAGE OF LEATHER

ANILINE DYED (an-a-line) Lovers of truly natural products are particularly fond of these leathers: their buttery, glove-soft texture adds an extra dimension of comfort to your sofa or chair. To create this luxurious softness and their rich gem-like colors, aniline dyed leathers are tumbled for up to 12 hours in drums containing transparent dyes. These dyes enhance the subtle textural and color variations of each hide. Through the years, aniline dyed leather develops a distinctive patina which adds to its value as a focal point in your home. Only premium hides with the most pleasing color and texture are selected for this category.

CORRECTED GRAIN LEATHERS Many hides are marred by naturally occurring imperfections. Insect bites, barbed wire scars, scrapes and other defects make them unsuitable for your home. To remove these imperfections, Corrected Grain leathers are first sanded or buffed, then embossed to restore a natural-looking grain pattern. Finally, a dense protective topcoat is applied. Some natural softness is sacrificed in this process, but the proportionately larger number of hides in this category makes this the most economical grade of top grain furniture leather.

DRUM-DYED A dyeing process in which leather is immersed in and tumbled in a rotating drum, allowing maximum dye penetration.

DYEING The application of color, either by spraying, hand rubbing or immersion.

EMBOSSING A process in which design is added to leather by pressure to alter or correct the surface, resulting in uniform imitation grain.

FINISHING Any post tanning treatment, such as: dyeing, rolling, pressing, spraying, lacquering, antiquing, waxing, buffing, embossing, glazing, waterproofing, or flame-proofing.

FULL GRAIN A term which indicates that leather possesses its original, natural grain; leather which has not been altered.

GRAIN The distinctive pore and wrinkle pattern of a hide; may be either natural or embossed.

HAND A term used to describe the softness or feel of a leather.

NATURAL GRAIN The unaltered top grain surface of leather. PATINA (pa-tee-na) A lustre that develops with time and use.

PREMIUM SELECT A term describing hides with virtually no scars or blemishes, usually less than 5% of all hides.

SANDING Refers to the removal of grain, scars and blemishes from a hide.

SEMI-ANILINE (an-a-lin) Sometimes call “Aniline Plus”, these leathers are first drum dyed in penetrating aniline dyes. Then a thin matching topcoat is applied to even out the color of the hide surface. The topcoat also serves to protect against fading and stains. Semi-Aniline leathers are available in hundreds of colors. They retain most of the softness or their aniline dyed cousins because the natural top grain is left intact. A much larger proportion of the world hide supply is suitable for this class of leathers and as a result they are more moderately priced.

SPLITS Underlying layers of leather, usually used for suedes.

TANNING Treating raw hides to reduce their perishability.

TOP GRAIN The top surface of the hide. CARE OF LEATHER It is easier to care for leather upholstery than any other upholstered material.

For Spots and Spills Wipe excess liquid up immediately with a clean absorbent cloth or sponge. If necessary, use clean lukewarm water only and let the leather air dry naturally. If water is used, clean the entire area where the spot occurred. Do not dry wet areas with blow dryers, etc.

For Stubborn Spots and Stains Apply a mild, non-detergent soap solution with a clean wet sponge. Rinse well and let air dry.

For Butter, Oil, Grease Wipe the leather with a clean, dry cloth and let the remainder of the oil dissipate into the leather. Do not apply water or try to wash a grease spot.

NOTE: These are only suggested methods of cleaning and should always be tried first on a hidden area of leather furniture. LEATHER PLACEMENT – CUTTING PARTS

Abilene

Abilene is a thick pebble grain article that is semi-aniline dyed with a protective coat. The finish is applied in four stages and each hide is twice drummed to create the initial crackle effect. The Italian tannage, using the highest grades of aniline dyes in just the right combination, enables this richness and transparency in the product with just the right sheen. The grain structure provides elegance to any décor yet it is rugged enough to survive everyday life.

Africa Africa is a seductively soft hide with a dramatic pull-up effect. Natural oils and waxes are applied to provide unique luster and a velvet like hand touch. It is vacuum dried for a firm finish and added texture. Natural visible markings such as healed scars, insect bites, small scratches and other signatures of nature are characteristics to be appreciated and confirm its true identity. Over time a rich patina will develop reflecting the lifestyle of its user.

Aspen Aspen is a medium weight (1.2-1.3) hide that has been corrected in order to reduce surface imperfections. It has been embossed and tumbled to achieve a pronounced pebble grain effect. A special kela roller applies the "two-tone" effect that gives each hide its own distinct look and coloration. Aspen is a terrific starting grade article that resembles a much higher grade veg-tanned type of leather.

Bronx

Bronx is a two-toned, semi-aniline dyed leather with a corrected top grain. These South American hides are carefully selected and then tanned and dyed in Europe using state-of- the-art methods. Because of the tight, small grain, this leather is even, consistent, and smooth. The two-tone adds dimension and depth while the finish adds brightness to this classic, traditional leather. Cambridge

This vintage is a product of South American hides that are aniline dyed and hand antiqued using three colors to create the multi-tone effect of Cambridge. The hides are then hand sanded to distress the hides to produce an aged old-world effect which highlights all of the natural markings. These natural markings prove the leather's authenticity as Nature's autograph. Finally the hides are tumbled to produce its exquisitely soft hand and remarkable drape ability. Periodic dusting and vacuuming is recommended for normal maintenance. Blot spills as quickly as possible and let the area air dry. If a spill is absorbed, it will dissipate with time or migrate into the leather and become muted over time and contribute to creating its own unique character and rich patina. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR USE ON MOTION UPHOLSTERY.

Casamari

Casamari is an article that has a wonderful visual depth that exudes a deep richness, while also possessing a very soft, sexy hand. It certainly looks and feels more expensive than it is and can be merchandised on the widest variety of home furnishing fashions. Casamari is a top grain leather and its unique effect coat provided an interesting base in both pattern and subtle tonal variation.

Chaps Following full aniline dying, waxes are applied to this top grain South American hide to produce a warm and rich patina. The leather is then tumbled for a short period to break the finish giving it rugged, aged pull-up effect with a slight crackled appearance.

Chesterfield

Chesterfield is a medium weight, corrected grain semi-aniline leather. It has a unique character that is achieved by the hides being buffed multiple times and in a random pattern. This, combined with the tanning process, renders a natural pebble grain look and the appearance of a hand rubbed, aged leather. This hide proudly shows off all of natures signatures: neck wrinkles, stretch marks, healed scars and insect bites...all of the natural markings that are your assurance of this leather's genuineness. Darkbrindle & Lightbrindle

Enjoy the luxury of genuine leather and real fur of this hair on hide leather. The tanned leather hide displays the beauty of natural bovine hair with a vintage appearance that exhibits the allure of genuine cow hides. Color variations within the hide, and from hide to hide, are a part of the natural beauty of this leather. As many cow hides differ in color, shade, hair length, and overall appearance, this hair on hide captures these fascinating attributes. For regular cleaning, a vacuum cleaner is the best option and is ideal for preventing the accumulation of small dirt particles. A soft bristle brush or fork comb can also be used without any damage to the product. This leather is a sturdy product overall and with good care will have a high durability rate. In case of stains with liquid or pasty substances, it is recommended to clean with a damp cloth using a small amount of soap if necessary. Each chair upholstered in hair on hide is unique. If ordering two chairs to be used in the same setting, they will not match exactly due to the unique characteristics of each hide. This leather is restricted for use only on outside backs and outside arms. It cannot be used for seat or back cushions. ** Because this leather is a natural cow hide, all hides will be different. No two hides will match. Some hides will have more brown brindle effect than others. Some hides may have some white spots in the hair. Please note photos below.

Diego Diego is a top grain leather that emphasizes a worn-in distressed look that gives it elegance and warmth. Only the top selection of Brazilian raw material is used. Each hide is fully aniline dyed and is lightly coated with oil and waxes using the latest tannage techniques to highlight the natural tones and rich colors that will enhance over time in both feel and appearance. When upholstered, it offer a dramatic pull up effect revealing a rich contrast in color that enhances its natural appeal.

Dorado

Dorado is a natural top grain leather that has been fully aniline dyed. Every hide goes through a light buffing process to clean the leather or surface imperfections and prepare the leather to receive a light coat of pigment colors. A fine print is then applied to help every hide develop into a dry drum a beautiful uniform natural grain. The unique two- tone aniline kela effect gives this leather its distinctive look and character. Dreamer

Dreamer is created from top grain bovine hides, lightly corrected to create a consistent surface while maintaining the beautiful esthetics of full grain leather. The extended milling process accentuates the natural grain and compliments its softness and drape ability. The unique finish provides increased durability enabling Dreamer's flexibility in a variety of lifestyles, while maintaining the luxurious soft touch of aniline leather. The natural features and distinctive grain which validate the authenticity of a fine leather may vary from to hide and within a hide. To maintain the leather's beauty avoid direct exposure to sunlight or any other strong light as well as radiators or other generators of heat. Periodic dusting and vacuuming is recommended for normal maintenance. Blot spills as quickly as possible and let the area air dry.

Durango Design, Durability…Durango! Durango is the best of both worlds for today’s consumer – soft and supple leather with a protection and clean ability story. Durango is a slightly corrected hide that is finished in a unique way mixing aniline dyestuffs and pigments. By using primarily aniline dyes the hides remain soft to the touch while the addition of some pigments adds durability and ease of cleaning. The final color also remains much more consistent than that of conventional aniline leathers.

Eldorado Eldorado is a full grain aniline leather with a unique and beautiful double tone effect. The depth of color is engineered by using aniline dyes combined with specialty waxes and proprietary finishing techniques. A protective top coat is added to create a luxurious leather that is strong, durable and unique.

Endura Endura is a standard upholstery weight leather ( 0.9 / 1.1 mm thick ) with a soft, luxurious hand and a matte finish with a reduced sheen level. The hides are lightly buffed to reduce surface imperfections and are then naturally milled to soften the touch. Absolutely no grain print is applied and the leather maintains an appealing smooth appearance. Endura has the ideal combination of beauty and practicality.

Hesterfield

Hesterfield is an aniline dyed, corrected grain leather finished in a two-tone manner that renders an ever-so-slight cloudy appearance. It is a glove soft leather with a silky hand touch that adapts to all upholstery applications with ease. The natural glow and depth created by the two-tone effect enhances the sophisticated appeal of this leather. James River The adage that you can't judge a book by its cover nicely sums up the allure of James River. This full grain article has lurking just below its "cover" a very alluring and appealing surprise…a tri-tone color combination that evokes a sense of prestige and history. The visual image created by the hand crafted on-the-furniture rub-off technique is normally only achieved through years of use and enjoyment.

Kokomo Kokomo is a full aniline that creates a very natural look. The leather is drummed using only aniline dyes and while tumbling in the drum the grain pops out and a highlighted tipping effect is the result. In other words, the aniline is darker where the tips of the grain appear and the flatter part of the hide has a more solid and slightly lighter color. All the while, it is extremely natural, with no pigments on the top. This creates a more rustic kind of look when upholstered.

Laramie Laramie is a wild and natural leather with a vintage appearance. A manifesto of natural leather that is defined, naked and unapologetic on the surface. As it matures a patina will develop exhibiting the lifestyle and character of the owner.

Legacy Made from select South American hides, Legacy is aniline dyed with exclusive chemical formulations to produce a leather that emulates a fine garment leather. This full grain leather has a subtle hand rubbed effect applied by skilled artisans in the US. Legacy has a traditional, aged look coupled with a luxurious and soft touch that is finished with a protective top coat. Because of the top coat, spills will bead up for a time, so they should be blotted quickly and left to air dry. If a spill is absorbed, it will either dissipate over time as human skin will absorb and eventually diffuse stains or the spill will migrate into the leather and become muted over time and add a unique character and rich patina to the piece.

Liberty Liberty is a full top grain leather with a natural grain and a pull-up effect that creates a beautiful aged look when upholstered. The hides get their pull-up effect from oils and waxes that are applied during the finishing process. When the leather is stretched, the oils and waxes are displaced, which causes the stretched area to become lighter in color and render a naturally aged look. Since Liberty is a full grain, the surface of the hides has been altered so all nature's markings such as healed scars and neck and belly wrinkles will be evident and should be considered as part of the natural beauty of a genuine leather product. Opium Opium is an embossed leather in an assembly of nature's beauty at its best. The great attention to foliage creates an intoxicating medley that blends well to accent other leathers. While embossing adds a unique fashion appeal to the leather, this process removes some of the leather's elasticity and it becomes very stiff. Being less pliable the embossed leather is harder to sew. It is also less breathable and makes it less comfortable for seating. Therefore this leather is restricted for use on outside parts ONLY. Cannot be used for seat or back cushions or any all over application.

Outsider Outsider is a standard weight corrected grain article produced from premium Brazilian raw material. The unique tannage of Outsider provides a luxurious drape and suppleness of hand highlighted by a new kela (two-tone) design effect. A light clear coat application to the surface enhances the endurance of this lightly finished leather.

Pony This is a full grain, fully aniline dyed leather with a unique, soft wax top finish that is processed under extreme heat and pressure to provide a rich polished surface with a transparent top. Pony is the essence of “natural” leather as this clear, wax finish reveals all the inherent features of full grain leather and highlights the rich, natural shade toning throughout the hide. This leather provides a beautiful patina over time as wear actually enhances its look and appeal. It is a very low maintenance cover. Use a dry cloth to remove residual dust and remove ordinary dirt and smudges with just a lightly dampened cloth. Otherwise, leave it alone. Ravenwood Ravenwood is a true throwback to the old 1920’s and 30’s vegetable tanned leathers that were prevalent in the leather suitcase and handbag industries. It blends the vegetable tanning techniques of the past with today’s modern technology to achieve the look and feel of yesteryear. Ravenwood is a full grain leather made on heavyweight, thick (1.3/1.4 mm) hides that come from the best selection of European raw material. A specially made kela roller applies the “two-tone” effect that gives each hide its own distinct look and coloration. Finally the hides are milled (the process of tumbling the hides in a large drum) to reach the soft yet full and plumb hand.

Rucker Rucker is a natural, full grain leather of 1.0 to 1.2 mm thick that presents an extremely sophisticated look with its premium characteristics on superior German and New Zealand hides tanned in Italy. The large, clean hides are vacuum dried and double ironed. A touch of oil highlights the burnished effect and a slight wax top coat is added to provide a pleasing touch and hint of subtle pull. Savoy Savoy is a standard upholstery weight leather ( 0.9 / 1.1 mm thick ) that is chrome tanned and finished with oils and aniline dyes. It is a starting grade leather with a slight pull-up effect and an appealing level of transparency and depth of color usually not seen in beginning grade leathers. By using the highest grades of dyes and oils the richness of the tannage comes to the surface of the leather and renders a subtle yet beautiful contrast.

Steamboat Steamboat is a corrected, top grain leather with a super soft tannage. It has a wonderful visual depth that exudes a deep richness that can be merchandised on the widest variety of home furnishings. Steamboat's unique two-toned effect provides an appealing base in both pattern and subtle tonal variation.

Steer Steer is a full aniline leather that shows all of the natural markings of the hide. Each one is unique; the hand sanding adds to the overall softness and enhances the best characteristics of one of nature's most beautiful articles. It has the same specifications of a nubuck leather, but is considered a brushed leather; therefore, spills and stains should be taken care of promptly.

Taos

A thick natural pebble grain leather that is soft, luxurious, and comfortable. It inspires relaxation. The pebble grain comes from hours of milling in wooden drums. All natural, no printing at all. The fibers of the leather expand and because the leather is on the thicker side (1.3/1.4mm) of the leather spectrum, the pebble grain appears from the tannage and solvents used during the dying and milling process.

Tortice Tortice is an embossed leather that combines the exotic appeal of a tortoise shell with that of a croc. Its bold design and striking pattern will accentuate any room or decor. While embossing adds a unique fashion appeal to the leather, this process removes some of the leather's elasticity and causes it to become very stiff. Being less pliable the embossed leather is harder to sew. It is also less breathable and makes it less comfortable for seating. Therefore this leather is restricted for use on outside parts ONLY. Cannot be used for seat or back cushions or any all over application. Vintage

Vintage is a leather that replicates the aged and processed timeless look that a leather normally only achieves through years of use and wear. The hides are from the top selection of South American raw material and are lightly corrected to reduce surface imperfections. They are aniline dyed and given a durable yet soft "finished" top coat. The mottled, two-tone effect of Vintage is created by the hides first going through a special spray machine and then being tumbled in a wooden drying drum.

****Leather should be dusted or vacuumed regularly. Dust, then wipe clean with a slightly dampened cloth. It is not recommended to use any commercial cleaning products such as all purpose household cleaners. Also, leather should never be exposed to direct sunlight or other strong light sources.
