B. Geography

North Salmara is a sub-division of District in . The sub-division headquarter Abhayapuri is located at 26°20′N latitude and 90°39′E longitude and has a mean elevation of 40m above MSL. The election district is bordered by Bilasipara subdivision of district in the west, Bijni subdivision of to the North, district to the west and the mighty Brahmaputra to the south beyond which lies

- 1 - district. The district headquarter Bongaigaon lies at a distance of 21 km north of Abhayapuri. The election district is connected by National Highway NH17 and NH117 and State Highway SH2.

The terrain is mostly flat dotted by low lying hillocks which are rich in flora and fauna and are home to fascinating animals like the Golden Langur. Perennial Himalayan rivers Aie, Manas and Champa flow through the district and later join the mighty Brahmaputra. There are also numerous rivulets (Kujia, Tunia, etc) and wetlands across the district. Some of the prominent wetlands and ponds are Tamranga , Konora beel, Doloni beel, Valley Manah and Koya Kujia. Koya Kujia is also developed as a Eco Park which witnesses seasonal migration of birds.

The major occupation of the people is agriculture. The fertile silty alluvial soil is suitable for cultivation of all major crops and vegetables. The election district is vulnerable to recurrent floods by the Himalayan rivers originating in and the Brahmaputra.

C. Demography:

The election district is a home to many communities like the Koch Rajbongshis, Rabhas, Garos, Bengalis and speaking people. The predominant religion practiced are , and Christianity. In the Abhayapuri North LAC, Rajbongshis, and Hindu Bengalis are the main inhabitants and Abhayapuri South (SC) LAC is predominantly inhabited by muslims followed by Rajbongshis and Hindu Bengalis. The majority of the people in the char areas are muslims.
