Congratulations. Keep up the great work. Measles is a highly infectious disease that affects both adults and children. Measles is more serious than many peo- ple realise; of the recent cases in New Zealand over 30 have required hospital treatment. Measles starts with a fever, cough, runny nose and/or sore eyes followed a few days later by a rash. People are infectious from 5 days be- fore to 5 days after the rash appears.

Most of the recent cases have occurred in unimmunised people and immunisation, with two doses of the measles/ mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine, remains the best way to pre- vent infection and spread of measles within the community. Immunisation is free for New Zealand residents born after 1 January 1969 who have not previously received two doses of a measles containing vaccine. Unimmunised people ex- posed to measles will need to stay away from school for at least 14 days. “

Welcome to all our new families. It is great to see so many new faces at school and I’m sure you are all getting to know our community, children and other aspects of school life.

It’s great to see our kids out on the winter sports fields and courts in their new uniforms. They definitely stand out from the crowd. Thanks to all the coaches, managers and supporters for their time, energy and patience.

Our Junior Farmer competition was a huge success this year. This is a great opportunity to showcase our school and community. Thank you to everyone who was involved in the planning, sponsorship and helping on the day especially Mark & Sue Barton. We have already been ap- proached by a number of businesses that want to be involved next year. Junior Farmer is our trade mark event for the year so please support it and get involved in this in any way possible.

With calving coming up, the Pokuru School Board of Trustees will once again be asking our local farmers to donate a calf. This is a major source of funds for the school and is critical to allow us to provide the programmes and learning environment that help every student achieve their goals.

LEARNING CHANGE NETWORK is something that you will be hearing much more about soon. Pokuru School is part of a cluster of schools called Rural & Roses made up of 8 schools. They have a strong focus on student engagement, student achievement and student ownership of their learning environment. The cluster’s main focus at the moment is identifying areas in technology; resources and professional development that will help the cluster achieve its goals. This is a fan- tastic learning environment to be in. We are very fortunate to have the management and staff that embrace these sorts of environments.

On the 27th June, we are holding our annual Wine and Cheese Evening beginning at 7pm in the school and community hall. A light supper will be served and there will be entertainment provid- ed. This event is a way in which we as a school can say thank you to all of our parents, caregivers and the local community for all that they do to support and assist us. We are also taking this op- portunity to welcome any new families to the Pokuru district so please come along and join us.
