School Community Established in 1899, Jesuit High School of Tampa is a college preparatory school for male students in grades 9-12. Enrollment is limited to approximately 825 students, all of whom commute to Jesuit from throughout a five-county area of greater Tampa Bay. This year, the Jesuit student body is comprised of 32% students of color, and 34% of our students benefit from $2.73 million in financial aid. Selective Admission Applications to Jesuit High School endure a highly competitive admissions process. Very few transfer students are accepted, in the interest of cultivating a cohesive four-year experience of formation for our students. Jesuit Faith Tradition As the Jesuit axiom Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (“For the Greater Glory of God”) indicates, our Catholic faith governs every aspect of a student’s formation at Jesuit High School. As such, each Jesuit student is required to study four full years of intensive academic Theology: Introduction to Catholicism, Sacred Scripture, Christian Morality, and Theological Disputations & Christian Discipleship. Additionally, students must make one retreat per academic year. Impact of COVID-19 As we begin the new academic year back on campus, we wish to highlight the specific impacts COVID-19 has had on our students: Academics Class schedule – The transition to virtual learning did not alter our daily schedule. Students were expected to attend each of their classes daily and to submit work according to deadlines. Grading – There was no change in our grading system, and teachers continued to exercise flexibility when working with students. Comprehensive final exams were not administered for spring semester 2020. Continuation – For the current fall semester, the school offered students the option to eLearn by virtually attending class as it is taught. Close to 10% of our student body has elected to eLearn. Financial Aid For the 2020-2021 academic year, Jesuit added a supplemental $600,000 in student financial aid to account for the needs of our families. This development represents an increase of 30% from last year’s financial aid budget, now totaling $2.73M. Overall, our financial aid program supports 34% of the student body. Standardized testing Currently, the State University System in Florida still requires test scores in the admissions process for all 12 four-year public universities. As such, our students continue to search for dates and locations where the tests are being offered. As of late-summer, 1/3 of the members of the class of 2021 had not taken a standardized test, while another 1/3 had taken only one standardized test (either an ACT or SAT). 4701 N. Each student must complete the following requirements in order to earn a Jesuit diploma. A unit of 0.5 credits corresponds to one semester’s study in any given subject. English 4.0 credits Electives (senior year) 2.0 credits Mathematics 4.0 credits P.E. and Health 1.0 credits Theology 4.0 credits Speech; Art or Music 1.0 credits Social Studies 4.0 credits Computer Science 0.5 credits Foreign Language 3.0 credits Community Service 0.5 credits Lab Science 3.0 credits Total 27 credits Honors and AP Courses are not offered through an open enrollment process. Students may self-advocate to be placed into a class at the next-highest level of rigor if they seek a more challenging experience than their initial placement provides, but not all such requests are granted. All students enrolled in an AP class are required to take the corresponding AP exam. In the Jesuit spirit of cura personalis, or “care for the whole person”, students work with their counselors to evaluate their entire schedule of extracurricular activities, jobs, family responsibilities, and/or service commitments. Often times this may mean students are strongly encouraged to limit their selection of AP courses. Though we of course encourage students to seek challenges, we also educate students to recognize that well-rounded balance and a sustainable schedule are necessary for deep mastery of academic material and long-term success. Please note: only one AP course is available to eligible freshmen (Human Geography), and only one AP course is available to eligible sophomores (World History). All other AP courses are open ONLY to eligible juniors and seniors. At graduation each year, a valedictorian and salutatorian are recognized for the sole purpose of honoring academic achievement. Each transcript provides a cumulative weighted GPA. Our weighted GPA calculation adds 0.5 to each Honors course, and adds 1.0 to each AP course, provided the semester grade is C or higher. Final semester grades are in the form of a full letter grade, with no +/- added. Grades are awarded using the following grading system.
