Spaces are limited so book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment! What’s happening at Umbrella

Young Adults During August, the young adults group had a red, white and blue day celebrating team GB in the Olympics. They made a Union Jack cake and planted some beautiful flower arrangements as well as having a table football tournament.

Save Your Stamps!

We can claim money back for used, unused, UK and foreign stamps (we get even more if they are foreign!).

If you get letters through the post with stamps on, please cut them out and save them for us! We will soon have a stamp collection point at both Umbrella House and the Ronnie MacKeith Centre office where stamps can easily be dropped off.

You could even help out by starting a collection at work if you get lots of post— any way you can help would be great!

The only rule is that there must be no more than 1 cm of paper around the edge of the stamp—we get paid based on weight so 1 cm is a good amount to leave!

If you would like more information about this, please email General Manager Kristin Clark, [email protected]

High Functioning Autism Group

Recently, the group went to a new venue called " The Escape Rooms" .

Met by Shelly who runs the activity, she explained what they had to do (we cant say because it might spoil the fun anyone wanting to go!!).

The group had to work as a team to solve different puzzles and said that it was amazing fun!!

Here is a picture of the time and team Umbrella Family Support Groups

As we reach the end of the summer holidays I hope you and your families have managed to enjoy the lovely weather and have some fun. I realise this will not have been easy for everyone. The long school holidays, intensify the day to day caring for our children/young people trying to juggle and entertain our children and their siblings. Parents and carers are often exhausted and at the end of their tether by the time schools open . Our children also miss the routine of their school day and are looking forward to returning back and being with their friends again. The new school year means our children move up to a new class, move to a new school or perhaps onto college and further education- all of these changes are exciting but bring new challenges. Thanks goodness we find the energy to cope. Alisha.

Our Parents/Carers Support Groups are resuming in September and I look forward to welcoming you all at the various venues.

Our groups give you the opportunity to share common issues and worries but also to have some light hearted time together with others who know and understand your caring role.

Fundraising

We have once again had some wonderful support from the community and though we wish we could share them all, we only have room for a few. Thank you to everyone who supports Umbrella.

South Coast Challenge

At the end of August, Simon F and three of his friends took part in an epic challenge to walk 100km in 24 hours!

The event was organised by Action Challenge and was held on the South Coast. 2000 people took part in the walk from Eastbourne to Arundel with a break for dinner before setting off again from Brighton into the night with glow sticks!

Simon said “The event couldn’t have been ran smoother. The crowds and support were awesome. The best bit is that loads of people donated towards it all which helped massively – I think the event has raised a total of £1.6 million which is fantastic!”.

Simon and his friends each chose to support a charity including Cystic Fibrosis, CALM, Samaritans and Umbrella.

So far Simon’s online fundraising page has raised £495 but he said he still has some money to gather in so we’ll let you know the grand total but we all think he has done a wonderful job. We are so grateful for the support and wish him and the team a speedy recovery—we bet those legs are aching!

Rachel R held a cake sale for Umbrella at “Dadload” - a festival for friends and family. She did absolutely brilliantly raising a whopping £221.50. Thank Laura G took part in the Big Fun Run you Rachel! at Markeaton Park on 20th August and raised £105 for Umbrella. It took Laura 36 minutes and 27 seconds to complete the run which she was really pleased with. We think she did a great job and looks great sporting an Umbrella tshirt!
