There will be four statewide elections conducted in 2016, which makes being a prepared, informed voter a priority in these important times. IThis is your publicity pamphlet for the May 17 Special Election. I hope you find it to be a valuable educational voting tool. This pamphlet also serves as your sample ballot. ARIZONA VOTERS TO A MESSAGE The pamphlet contains the following: 1. General information about voting. 2. Information about the propositions that will appear on the ballot, including the actual language of the measure followed by a description of what each measure does, and arguments for and against it. 3. A sample ballot/voter’s guide. Please keep in mind the following important dates: • Voter Registration Deadline: April 18. For information about your registration, please call your County Recorder’s office. A list of contact information for each County Recorder can be found on page 10. • Early Voting: April 20 - May 13. This is the period when early ballots are mailed to registered voters who request one. You may also vote early in person. Contact your County Recorder to request a ballot by mail. • Election Day: May 17. Polling Places/Vote Centers are open from 6:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Some local governments also will be holding elections on May 17, so state and local elections could be combined on one ballot. In the November 9, 2018 CSA Weekly Update: Thank You for Your Service Veterans! PSPRS Briefs County Managers General Election Preliminary Results APA Arizona State Planning Conference Thank You for Your Service Veterans! This weekend we observe the Veterans Day holiday. Veterans Day has its origins in Armistice Day, which was first acknowledged by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. The first anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, ending WWI, took place “in the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.” For that reason, Congress made Armistice Day a national holiday on November 11, 1938. However, in 1968, the signing of the Uniform Holiday Bill ensured three-day weekends for Federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. Many states did not agree with this and continued to celebrate the holidays on their original dates, causing confusion. Therefore, on September 20, 1975 President Gerald Ford signed legislation returning Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in 1978.     SaddleBrooke Hiking Club Hike Database 11-15-2020 Hike Location Hike Rating Hike Name Hike Description AZ Trail B Arizona Trail: Alamo Canyon This passage begins at a point west of the White Canyon Wilderness on the Tonto (Passage 17) National Forest boundary about 0.6 miles due east of Ajax Peak. From here the trail heads west and north for about 1.5 miles, eventually dropping into a two- track road and drainage. Follow the drainage north for about 100 feet until it turns left (west) via the rocky drainage and follow this rocky two-track for approximately 150 feet. At this point there is new signage installed leading north (uphill) to a saddle. This is a newly constructed trail which passes through the saddle and leads downhill across a rugged and lush hillside, eventually arriving at FR4. After crossing FR4, the trail continues west and turns north as you work your way toward Picketpost Mountain. The trail will continue north and eventually wraps around to the west side of Picketpost and somewhat paralleling Alamo Canyon drainage until reaching the Picketpost Trailhead. Hike 13.6 miles; trailhead elevations 3471 feet south and 2399 feet north; net elevation change 1371 feet; accumulated gains 1214 northward and 2707 feet southward; RTD __ miles (dirt). AZ Trail A Arizona Trail: Babbitt Ranch This passage begins just east of the Cedar Ranch area where FR 417 and FR (Passage 35) 9008A intersect. From here the route follows a pipeline road north to the Tub Ranch Camp. The route continues towards the corrals (east of the buildings).

National School Choice Week 2015 will kick off at the Florida Theatre at 12:30 pm on January 23. The event is the first event of an unprecedented 11,082 independently planned and independently funded special events taking place across all 50 states during the Week, which runs until January 31, 2015. The goal of the Week is to shine a positive spotlight on effective education options for children, and to raise awareness of the importance of, and benefits of, school choice in a variety of forms. More than 1,900 students, parents, and teachers will attend the Official Kickoff celebration, which will be nationally televised – on tape delay – on two cable television networks. The event’s speakers include: • US Senator John McCain (R-AZ), a longtime school choice supporter, who will be touring the NFL-YET Academy, a public charter school in Phoenix, and addressing a National School Choice Week event at the school. • Rev.     2015 LEGISLATIVE REPORT AND SCORECARD Desert Nesting Bald Eagle photo by Robin Silver ARIZONA 2015 LEGISLATIVE REPORT By Karen Michael This year Humane Voters of Arizona (HVA) joined with other animal protection groups to form the Humane Legislative Coalition of Arizona (HCLA), an alliance of local animal advocacy organizations. Member groups include HVA, Animal Defense League of Arizona, Arizona Humane Society, and Humane Society of Southern Arizona. The coalition hired Brian Tassinari, the outstanding political consultant who helped to kill last session’s bad farm animal bill. This represents the Arizona animal community’s largest effort to date to protect our state’s animals and citizen initiative rights. Polls indicate that Arizona voters strongly support endangered Mexican wolf reintroduction and farm animal protection. This was demonstrated by the outpouring of support requesting a veto of the farm animal bill. Animal protection is a nonpartisan issue. A perfect example is that two of the most vocal supporters, Senators Farley and Kavanagh, are at polar ends of the political spectrum, yet they consistently agree when it comes to fighting for animals. The Good Bills The Cat Impound Exemption Bill (SB 1260) This beneficial measure exempts impounded cats from minimum holding periods at animal control facilities if the cat is eligible for a trap, neuter, return (TNR) program. Eligible cats are sterilized and ear-tipped and returned to their outdoor homes. Best Friends Animal Society drafted the original bill, SB 1198, which was sponsored by Senator Kavanagh. The bill failed on the House floor after an amendment was added to prohibit pound fees to be charged to anyone reclaiming an impounded cat.
