Photography freezes moments of life on a time-line; it captures and evokes the existence that already belongs to the past. Although different in nature from autobiographical writings, it serves as an important source of knowledge of one’s life; as it does not only proves that ‘one was’, but also gives an insight into ‘how one was’. Portraits of Jean Cocteau (1889–1963), who for over four decades was one of the most frequently photographed members of Paris van- guard, demonstrate an essential aspect of the artist’s identity and authenticity. When posing for photographs, Cocteau always had the same strategy, one which became his authorial signature. This chameleon of Parisian artistic salons attempted various trans- formations treating his own body as a means of expression. He avoided sincerity; in- stead he turned the process of photo shooting into a glamorized spectacle. For example, a photograph titled Jack-of-all-trades , taken by Philippe Halsman in 1948, shows Jean Cocteau stylized as a character taken away from his poetic, imaginary world.

  • On Blu-Ray, Dvd and Digital Download – 5Th August 2019 Watch the Trailer
ON BLU-RAY, DVD AND DIGITAL DOWNLOAD – 5TH AUGUST 2019 WATCH THE TRAILER HERE Studiocanal are delighted to announce the release of brand new 4k restorations of two films from one of cinema’s most influential artists, Jean Cocteau – a poet, playwright, novelist, designer, visual artist and one of the avant-garde movement’s most successful and influential filmmakers. LE SANG D’UN POÊTE (The Blood of a Poet) and LE TESTAMENT D’ORPHÉE (The Testament of Orpheus) will be released on DVD, Digital Download and for the first time on Blu-ray on 5th August 2019 as part of Studiocanal’s Vintage World Cinema Collection. Pre-order now: http://po.st/TestamentOrphee; http://po.st/SangPoete. Made thirty years apart, these two films bookend Cocteau’s filmic career and are both considered masterpieces of the avant-garde movement. Made in 1932, the first part of the ‘Orphic’ trilogy LE SANG D’UN POÊTE, seeks to explore the feelings within a poet’s heart and soul, beginning in an artist’s studio where an unfinished statue comes to life. The lips of its androgynous face move, pressing a kiss to the artist’s hand. At the statues demand, he plunges it into a mirror. In his last film LE TESTAMENT D’ORPHÉE (1960), Cocteau created a truly abstract piece of work as his swansong. He himself portrays an 18th century poet who travels through time on a quest for divine wisdom. In a mysterious, possibly post-apocalyptic wasteland, he has a series of enigmatic and surreal encounters with symbolic phantoms with whom he muses about the nature of art and his own career.

From the age of 20, Édouard De Max, a celebrated actor, introduced him to the literary world where he met a great success. He published his first collection of poems,La Lampe d’Aladin (Aladdin’s Lamp), as well as articles & drawings in Comœdia. BIOGRAPHY In 1913, Cocteau was deeply moved by the Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring), a ballet composed by Stravinsky & choreographed by Nijinsky. The public’s hostile response to this ballet confirmed his belief that all artistic creation was unconventional. A few years later, he created his own ballet with Erik Satie & Picasso: Parade. The performance by the ‘Ballets Russes’ in 1917 surprised the public & the critics. The poet’s theatrical & literary creations were prolific in the 1920’s:Le Coq (The Cockerel), Le Bœuf sur le toit (The Ox on the Roof), Les Mariés de la Tour Eiffel (The Wedding Party on the Eiffel Tower), Antigone, Œdipe roi (Oedipus the King), Le Grand écart (The Miscreant), Thomas l’imposteur (Thomas the Impostor), L’Ange Heurtebise (The Angel Heurtebise) & Le Mystère de Jean l’oiseleur, (The Mystery of Jean the Birdcatcher), Orphée (Orpheus), Opéra & Les Enfants terribles (The Strange Ones), without forgetting the publication of a collection of drawings dedicated to Picasso in 1924.
