Conducting Studies Conference 2016 24th – 26th June St Anne’s College University of Oxford Conducting Studies Conference 2016 24-26 June, St Anne’s College WELCOME It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to St Anne’s College and the Oxford Conducting Institute Conducting Studies Conference 2016. The conference brings together 44 speakers from around the globe presenting on a wide range of topics demonstrating the rich and multifaceted realm of conducting studies. The practice of conducting has significant impact on music-making across a wide variety of ensembles and musical contexts. While professional organizations and educational institutions have worked to develop the field through conducting masterclasses and conferences focused on professional development, and academic researchers have sought to explicate various aspects of conducting through focussed studies, there has yet to be a space where this knowledge has been brought together and explored as a cohesive topic. The OCI Conducting Studies Conference aims to redress this by bringing together practitioners and researchers into productive dialogue, promoting practice as research and raising awareness of the state of research in the field of conducting studies. We hope that this conference will provide a fruitful exchange of ideas and serve as a lightning rod for the further development of conducting studies research. MARCH - APRIL 2018 I ISSUE 5 BRUCKNER & BACH Lara Ciekiewicz A CHORUS LINE LUCA BURATTO PLAYS PROKOFIEV AL SIMMONS SYMPHONIC SHENANIGANS wso.ca I 204-949-3999 MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR In Winnipeg we greet the lengthening days and warmer weather with great enthusiasm and a feeling of pride for making it through another winter. Most of us say “that wasn’t too bad, at least it is a dry cold.” For the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the start of spring brings us much enthusiasm about the season offerings for the coming year, but it also gives us extra appreciation for the concerts we are able to attend in the spring. I am looking forward to hearing Gwen Hoebig and Karl Stobbe perform Bach’s Double Concerto followed by the monumental Bruckner’s 9th Symphony. The partnership with Rainbow Stage continues with a wonderful performance of A Chorus Line, we perform great choral masterpieces at St. Boniface Cathedral in recognition of the anniversary of the diocese, and we welcome exciting young pianist Luca Buratto to the WSO. And, of course, we look forward to a performance with the irrepressible Al Simmons, our local genius. What else can we anticipate in the months to come? Well, the annual Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Spring Gala on April 26 will move to the Centennial Concert Hall and Alloway Hall this year. The event will be connected to an exclusive performance of the orchestra and cast members from Cirque de la symphonie. Gala events are wonderful ways to celebrate as a community of WSO supporters, but attending the gala is not the only way to support the legacy of symphonic music in Winnipeg. You can enter the Symphony Sweepstakes, make a donation to the WSO Friends or Maestro’s Circle Programs, or remember the WSO in your estate planning.
