Japanese Culture Now http://www.tjf.or.jp/takarabako/ Japanese pop culture, in the form of anime, manga, Manga: and computer games, has increasingly attracted at- tention worldwide over the last several years. Not just a small number of enthusiasts but people in Japan’s Favorite general have begun to appreciate the enjoyment and sophistication of Japanese pop culture. This installment of “Japanese Culture Now” features Entertainment Media manga, Japanese comics. Characteristics of Japanese Comics Chronology of Postwar 1) The mainstream is story manga Japanese Manga The mainstream of manga in Japan today is “story manga” that have clear narrative storylines and pictures dividing the pages into 1940s ❖ Manga for rent at kashihon’ya (small-scale book-lending shops) frames containing dialogue, onomatopoeia “sound” effects, and win popularity ❖ Publication of Shin Takarajima [New Treasure Island] by other text. Amélie Nothomb, Une forme de vie The paper focuses on the comparison between two works written for women’s educa- tion in ancient Japan: The Murasaki Shikibu nikki (the Murasaki Shikibu Diary, early 11th century) and the Abutsu no fumi (the Letter of Abutsu, 1263). Like many literary docu- ments produced in the Heian (794-1185) and in the Kamakura (1185-1333) periods they describe the hard life in the service of aristocratic fgures and the difculty of managing relationships with other people. Both are intended to show women what positive ef- fects might arise from sharing certain examples of good conduct and at the same time, the inevitable negative consequences on those who rejected them. Important aspects that could not be expressed through dialogue - the pulse, breath and emotional subtleties of the four sisters - were represented musically by celebrated composer Kanno Yoko. The summer ocean sparkling with sunlight, radiant autumn foliage, a tunnel of gorgeous yet impermanent cherry blossom trees, hydrangeas damp from the rainy season, brilliant fireworks heralding the arrival of another summer… Amidst the many and varied colors of Kamakura’s four seasons, four sisters cause each other emotional anguish, but in the process develop a very special bond. -

The Japanese forces, led by Tsuge Yukihito, are outfitted with state-of- the-art battle Labors (giant manned robots) and are thus more than a match for the hostile tanks. -

INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION STUDIES I:1:1991 ETIQUETTE IN INTERCULTURAL SITUATIONS: A JAPANESE BUSINESS LUNCHEON Helen E. Marriott Monash University INTRODUCTION The internationalization of business in the contemporary world has resulted in a tremendous increase in the amount of contact between business personnel from different cultures. To date, only a negligible amount of research has focussed upon this vital area of intercultural contact. This paper is specifically concerned with contact between Japanese and Australian businessmen but no doubt many of the findings are of relevance to speakers of other varieties of English. An early study on communication problems in Australian-Japanese business relations (Murie 1976) revealed that there was indeed a range of problems which characterized these business contact situations. One of the most important issues in intercultural contact, including business situations, is that of etiquette or politeness (Neustupny 1968, 1986). While various publications (e.g. Rowlands 1985) provide guidelines for business personnel on polite behavior, rigorous and systematic investigations of cross-cultural as well as of intercultural politeness strategies (cf. Sakamoto & Naotsuka 1982) are rare. Even though Brown and Levinson's (1987) thorough treatment of politeness strategies has significantly enhanced our understanding of the breadth of politeness phenomena, much more analytic work is still needed in order to interpret the behavior of participants in actual intercultural situations. Interpersonal or face-to-face contact is paramount in the business domain. Apart from business situations such as "meetings", "courtesy calls", "conferences", and "negotiations", an extremely important situation is one which involves a meal: 69 INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION STUDIES I:1:1991 either a business luncheon or a business dinner. -

Carmen Tamas An introduction to the anthropology of Japan (Ritual practices and daily rituals) Course overview The role of ritual practices in a country that has more than one festival on any given day of the year cannot be denied. It is a highly significant one that has pervaded the everyday life, where many gestures have acquired a ritual meaning, be it social or sacred. The present course aims to offer an overview of contemporary Japanese society with a focus on sacred rituals (related to religious practices) and profane rituals, those daily practices that have gained ritual characteristics: cyclic repetition in a pre-determined space, with pre-determined participants, roles, and activities. Course goals The students will become familiar with general concepts related to anthropology and ritual studies, and they will be able to apply them to contemporary Japanese society. They will be able to differentiate between universal and culture-specific aspects, and use this knowledge to analyze both sacred and daily practices. Grading criteria Class participation 10% Response papers (2 papers, 800-1000 words each) 20% Midterm 20% Ethnography report (presentation 20% + paper 30%) • The response papers are based on the readings indicate in the syllabus. Students may choose, but the response paper must be submitted by the deadline indicated in the syllabus (deadlines differ depending on the reading). • The midterm includes questions from topics covered during weeks 1~6. • The ethnography report is based on participant observation + academic research. The topic should be chosen by the midterm the latest. Oral presentations will be given during the last week of the course, and the written report (7000~8000 words) will be submitted during exam week. -

KNOWING WOMEN: SEI SHŌNAGON’S MAKURA NO SŌSHI IN EARLY-MODERN JAPAN by GERGANA ENTCHEVA IVANOVA A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Asian Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) July, 2012 © Gergana Entcheva Ivanova, 2012 Abstract This dissertation explores the reception history of Makura no sōshi (The Pillow Book, 11th c.) from the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries. Focusing on an extensive body of texts, including scholarly commentaries, erotic parodies, and instruction manuals for women, I examine how Makura no sōshi and the image of its female author Sei Shōnagon were transformed through shifts in political contexts, readerships, and socio-cultural conditions. The complex reception history of The Pillow Book, in which the text was recreated through diverse forms, serves as a useful case study of how literary criticism, gender structures, and the status of women have changed through time. Drawing from research on the invention of national literatures and the historical reception of Japanese “classical” works, this study reveals the processes and agents that contributed to the shifting place of Makura no sōshi within Japanese literature. By so doing, it sheds light on the extent to which misrepresentations of Heian texts and their authors have influenced approaches in literary scholarship and shaped contemporary images of the Heian period as a whole. The Introduction analyzes the context in which Makura no sōshi was produced and considers theoretical approaches to the reception of literary works, particularly the processes of evaluation, interpretation, adaptation, and canonization.
