[10 min] Discover – The Eucharistic Mystery (p. 246-247)

 Ask: Why is the Eucharist a ?  Read page 246 to find the answer.  Read page 246 on the Liturgy of the Eucharist and ask these questions to check comprehension: o What does consecration mean? . Consecration is the part of the Eucharistic prayer in which the priest prays the words of Jesus over the bread and wine, and these elements become the Body and Blood of Christ. o What is transubstantiation? . Transubstantiation is the process by which the power of the Holy Spirit and the words of the priest transform the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. o What is another name for the Eucharist? . The Blessed Sacrament.  One important difference between Protestant and beliefs is that Protestants believe that the Eucharist is only a symbol or Christ or that he is only present spiritually, not physically. The Catholic teaches that the Eucharist is the Body, Blood, , and Divinity of Jesus present under the appearance of bread and wine. Through the process of transubstantiation, the bread and wine are changed into Jesus.  Because Catholic beliefs are different from Protestant denominations, we should not receive communion at Protestant churches, and non-Catholics should not receive the Eucharist at .

o Take the class into Church to pray in the pews in front of the tabernacle. o Note: There may be other classes in Church, so you might want to go to a quieter area in the Church if possible. o Before praying in silence, give the students some ideas of what to pray for: o Is there someone you know who needs God’s help? o What graces do you need to help you in your life this week?

 Explain: God has a plan for each of our lives. Give the students 5-10 minutes to write, then discuss as a class.

 Hand out the Youth Bibles. Help the students look up 1 Samuel chapter 3, verses 1-10 on page 295.  Recite the prayer on page 264.  Remind the students to read the Family + Faith pages with their parents.
