Grade 5 – Lesson 11 Key Points Consecration is the part of the Eucharistic prayer in which the priest prays the words of Jesus over the bread and wine, and these elements become the Body and Blood of Christ. Transubstantiation is the process by which the power of the Holy Spirit and the words of the priest transform the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. The Blessed Sacrament is a name for the Holy Eucharist, especially the Body of Christ reserved in the Tabernacle. A vocation is a particular way to answer God’s call, whether as a lay person (married or single), a religious, or a member of the ordained clergy. Recite the prayer and Scripture passage on page 243. [5 min] ACRE Review Review some of the questions from JEOPARDY last week, especially the questions that were more difficult for the students. The answer sheet is attached below. [10 min] Discover – The Eucharistic Mystery (p. 246-247) Ask: Why is the Eucharist a sacrifice? Read page 246 to find the answer. Read page 246 on the Liturgy of the Eucharist and ask these questions to check comprehension: o What does consecration mean? . Consecration is the part of the Eucharistic prayer in which the priest prays the words of Jesus over the bread and wine, and these elements become the Body and Blood of Christ. o What is transubstantiation? . Transubstantiation is the process by which the power of the Holy Spirit and the words of the priest transform the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. o What is another name for the Eucharist? . The Blessed Sacrament. One important difference between Protestant and Catholic beliefs is that Protestants believe that the Eucharist is only a symbol or Christ or that he is only present spiritually, not physically. The Catholic Church teaches that the Eucharist is the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus present under the appearance of bread and wine. Through the process of transubstantiation, the bread and wine are changed into Jesus. Because Catholic beliefs are different from Protestant denominations, we should not receive communion at Protestant churches, and non-Catholics should not receive the Eucharist at Mass. [5 min] Video on Eucharistic Adoration Explain: Jesus wants us to know and love him, and he is present inside the tabernacle in every Church for us to visit him. Eucharistic adoration is offered every Tuesday from 6:00-9:00 PM. Watch USCCB Adoration Video by St. Lawrence Catholic Church https://youtu.be/txuaN5FXgW8 [10 min] Eucharistic Adoration o Take the class into Church to pray in the pews in front of the tabernacle. o Note: There may be other classes in Church, so you might want to go to a quieter area in the Church if possible. o Before praying in silence, give the students some ideas of what to pray for: o Is there someone you know who needs God’s help? o What graces do you need to help you in your life this week? 2 o Are you feeling sad? o Do you have any good news? o Do you have any promises you would like to make? o What are you grateful to God for? [5 min] Live – People of Faith (p. 249) Read and discuss the life of St. Clare. [15 min] Your Vocation Explain: God has a plan for each of our lives. Another word for our “calling” in life is “vocation.” When you find your vocation, you will live a happy and fulfilled life. Vocations fall into these categories: o Clergy (bishop, priest, deacon) o Religious (monks and nuns) o Lay people (married and single people) Hand out Your Vocation. Give the students 5-10 minutes to write, then discuss as a class. [10 min] Responding to God’s Call (p. 258-261) Read pages 258-261 about vocations. o Deacons can be married, but priests, monks, and nuns live celibate lives. Discuss (You can divide the class into small groups first, then discuss as a class): o What are some good things about being a priest? . What are some challenges? o What are some good things about being a monk or a nun in consecrated religious life? . What are some challenges? o What are some good things about married life? . What are some challenges? o What are some good things about single life? . What are some challenges?
