ABSTRACT "KING HARVEST (HAS SURELY COME)": RURAL POPULIST IMAGERY IN ROOTS ROCK MUSIC, 1967-1973 CHRISTOPHER LEE WITTE CANDIDATE FOR DEGREE OF ARTS IN HISTORY UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND MAY2006 PROFESSOR ROBERT C. KENZER The Americanroots rock musical genre of the late 1960's and early 1970's too oftenhas been overlooked in the historical discussion of popular culture of the period. This study, through an examination of the works of fivepopular musical groups- Bob Dylan, The Band, The Grateful Dead, The Byrds, and Creedence ClearwaterRevival - focuseson how this music tied into a continued American mythology tradition of populism. Through an approach that corresponds with Richard Slotkin's views on the creation of Americanmyth , and a focuson the lyrical content of the songs and their presentation of nature, the open road, American heroes and anti-heroes, and death and destruction, this thesis examines how these songs utilized populist philosophies foundin earlier American folkand blues music andadapted them as a means to explain and rationalize their place in the post-modem American society.

  • LOOKING BACK in HISTORY Happenings in the Cookeville Area As Recorded in the Pages of the Herald Citizen Newspaper, Cookeville, TN
WAY BACK WHEN: LOOKING BACK IN HISTORY Happenings in the Cookeville area as recorded in the pages of the Herald Citizen Newspaper, Cookeville, TN. By Bob McMillian 1960’s (Compiled by Audrey J. Lambert) http://www.ajlambert.com 1960 (January 11, 1960) The town's two newspapers have changed hands. The Citizen has been sold to Coleman Harwell, former editor and vice•president of the Nashville Tennessean. The Putnam County Herald has also been sold to Harwell by its former publisher, William Matthew. Joining Harwell as a partner in the venture is John Mott, the editor of The Citizen. (January 13, 1960) Tennessee Tech professor D. W. Mattson says they don’t make them like they used to. He’s referring to roads, specifically the road he helped rebuild through Cookeville’s Westside business district in 1930 when he was resident engineer with the State Highway department. It’s still in good shape today. The road’s foundation was a thick sheet of concrete. Mattson, now chairman of TTU’s engineering department, says most of today’s roadbeds begin with layer of crushed stone. It just doesn’t hold up as well. Broad Street through Westside has been heavily traveled for the past 30 years and shows no signs of wear, he says. The one exception today is the new interstate highways like the one that’s due to be built past Cookeville in a year or so. He says the new superhighways are using concrete roadbeds and should last for at least 50 years. (January 13, 1960) The town’s two newspapers have changed hands.

  • “The Stories Behind the Songs”
“The Stories Behind The Songs” John Henderson The Stories Behind The Songs A compilation of “inside stories” behind classic country hits and the artists associated with them John Debbie & John By John Henderson (Arrangement by Debbie Henderson) A fascinating and entertaining look at the life and recording efforts of some of country music’s most talented singers and songwriters 1 Author’s Note My background in country music started before I even reached grade school. I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992.

  • Maxine Brown
Bio Maxine Brown Maxine Brown was born April 27, 1931 in Campti, Louisiana, and raised in various towns and villages in Arkansas. She began singing with her younger brother, Jim Ed, on the Barnyard Frolic, a live weekly radio show from Little Rock in 1952. The two recorded their first hit, “Looking Back To See,” Maxine’s own composition, in 1954. It went to No. 8 on the charts. Soon after, their younger sister, Bonnie, joined the act. Their next song, “Here Today And Gone Tomorrow,” which Maxine also wrote, went to No. 7. Initially, the three siblings billed themselves as “Jim Edward, Maxine & Bonnie Brown,” but by 1958, they were performing and recording simply as “The Browns.” They joined The Louisiana Hayride in 1954. It was here that they met and befriended Elvis Presley, who was then seeking a job on that show. The Browns toured with Presley from 1954 to 1956, when they became members of the nationally broadcast TV series, The Ozark Jubilee. During the mid-to-late 1950s, the trio charted such hits as “I Take The Chance,” “I Heard The Bluebirds Sing” and “Beyond The Shadow.” Then, in 1959, they released the record that would make them literally world-famous. It was “The Three Bells,” an English version of the French song “Les Trois Cloches.” Their producer was the renowned guitarist Chet Atkins. The song went to No. 1 on the country music charts and stayed there for 10 weeks. It topped the pop charts for four weeks, and it even went to No. 10 on the rhythm & blues chart.

  • Dear Friends, As 2013 Draws to a Close, I’D Like to Thank You for Your Continued Support and for So Many of You Coming to Our Shows
Nov - Dec 2013 Volume 32 Dear Friends, As 2013 draws to a close, I’d like to thank you for your continued support and for so many of you coming to our shows. We appre- ciate that lots of you come out year after year – so much that it’s like a family reunion and that makes it all the more fun for us when we spot you in the audience. Our goal for next year will be to meet each and every fan somewhere along the way as we hope to have a show near your town. For those that can’t get to a con- cert, we appreciate you staying in touch on the Facebook page and the website. Now I’m not too great with that Twitter thing yet but when there’s a special show or an Opry appearance, I’ll try extra hard to get you some photos that way. This new-fangled stuff changes all the time and it makes me wonder just what will be invented next. But it’s all good if it helps me stay better con- nected with you so I’ll keep trying to stay up on it. So what’s coming up for 2014? Well in my world, we’re talking about making new music. I’m still wanting to get a new Gospel album recorded but thinking I might do just a new music album first and then later in the year, Rhonda Vincent and I will proba- bly work on a new duet album as the first was so well received.
