SANTA FE — Members of an independent federal over- sight panel will hold a public hearing Wednesday in New Mexico on risks associated with ramping up plutonium work at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where problems have resulted in safety con- cerns and costly fines. The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board has scheduled the hours-long, evening public hearing in Santa Fe. The board, which advises the president and the U.S. Energy Department, raised concerns earlier this year after a fire at the lab’s plutonium facility, where the cores used to trigger explosions in nuclear weapons are devel- oped. Lab officials said the fire was quickly extinguished and only minor injuries were reported, but the board and others raised questions about the safe handling of plutonium and other materials at the facility. Los Alamos last year restarted development of the plutonium cores. The U.S. Energy Department wants to ramp up production. The board is looking at actions the lab and the National Nuclear Security Administration have taken to minimize risks as well as the adequacy of safety systems for current and future operations. Operations at Los Alamos have been under a microscope since 2014, when a container of waste left over from decades of bomb-making was inappropriately packed at the lab and shipped to the federal government’s only under- ground nuclear waste reposi- tory, where it ruptured. The resulting radiation release at the New Mexico facility forced the closure of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant for nearly three years and dis- rupted the federal govern- ment’s multibillion-dollar cleanup program. The incident led to policy and management overhauls and an expensive settlement with the state of New Mexico.
