Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings May 25, 2017 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 2011-The 19-inning game at Philadelphia lasts 6 hours, 11 minutes, setting a club record MLB.COM Vroom when it happens: Hamilton's huge run By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com | @m_sheldon | 2:46 AM ET + 9 COMMENTS CLEVELAND -- Just a few minutes earlier, the fireworks had burst and the music had blared as the Indians were celebrating what they thought was a one-run win over the Reds on a rainy Wednesday night at Progressive Field. But the only sound Reds outfielder Billy Hamilton could hear was the wind whistling in his ears as he blazed around the bases to score the game-winning run in an improbable 4-3 victory over the Indians. They say speed kills. On this night, it certainly killed the Indians. Twice the Indians had a chance to end the game and twice Hamilton said "not so fast." With men on first and second with one out in the ninth, Hamilton appeared to hit into a stellar 3-6-3 double play that closed with a bang-bang play at first to end the game. But Reds manager Bryan Price challenged the out call at first as the Indians gathered to celebrate their win, and the call was overturned. That left Hamilton at first and pinch-runner Arismendy Alcantara on third, with two outs and shortstop Zack Cozart at the plate facing Tribe closer Cody Allen, who had not blown a save all season. Allen threw Cozart a 1-0 fastball that was lined hard into short left field.

Outfielder Christin Stewart and right-handed reliever Adam Ravenelle will represent the organization at the league’s annual showcase game. Not selected this season was centerfielder JaCoby Jones. Stewart has struggled this fall, hitting .198 (7-for-37) with one home run and three RBIs in 10 games. The second-round draft pick out of Tennessee in 2015 had a strong debut for his first full professional season, with 30 home runs and 87 RBIs at Class A Lakeland and Double-A Erie. Ravenelle should garner consideration for a big league call-up sometime next season. Armed with a high-90 m.p.h. fastball, the righty out of Vanderbilt has allowed one hit in six innings this fall. He has recorded four saves for the Salt River Rafters, striking out three and walking three. Jones is playing well, going 13-for-39 in 11 games, with one home run and seven RBIs. Jones, who logged limited time with the Tigers last season, could compete for the starting centerfielder job if the team decides against picking up Cameron Maybin’s $9-million contract option and elects to fill the spot internally.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings February 17, 2017 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1909-The National League no longer allows umpires to fine players and begin to require relief pitchers to retire at least one batter before being relieved. MLB.COM Seasoned Votto embracing new wave of players By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com | @m_sheldon | February 16th, 2017 + 59 COMMENTS GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- A former National League Most Valuable Player, one of the game's best hitters and at 33 years old, Reds first baseman Joey Votto is also one of the club's longest-tenured players. Votto realizes that might prompt a fleet of younger, newer teammates to feel like they need to give him deferential treatment. Votto doesn't want that, however. "That can be a bit uncomfortable, because I'd just like to fit in," said Votto on Thursday, the report day for Reds position players at Spring Training. "But that passes quickly. It happens at the initial meeting and goes away. Some take the opposite spectrum and go, 'Pfff, who cares about this guy?' That's great, too." Spring Training 2017 has the rebuilding Reds missing the presence of Jay Bruce and Brandon Phillips after both were traded. Votto misses the teammates who have come and gone over the years, but is embracing the new wave of players. "It can be odd sometimes looking around the clubhouse and seeing certain players I used to play with not around," Votto said. "But I'm really excited about the next group. I'm excited to share future winning with them." Following a notoriously slow start to 2016, Votto finished with a .326/.434/.550 slashline, 29 home runs, 34 doubles and 97 RBIs.
