As the season began...

• Three All-Americans returned from the 1976 Cross Country team which placed 3rd in NCAA II; Joe Sheeran, John Christy, and John McInerney.

• In July, Joe Sheeran and Reo Rorem finished 1-2 in the Annual 20 kilometer Panther Pant in Charleston.

• John McInerney had an emergency appendectomy during the summer of 1977, just months before the start of the season.

• Dr. Tom Woodall was elected President of the NCAA II Cross Country Coaches Association.

The dual meets...

• Reo Rorem set a course record of 25:56 (5 miles) at the Oakbrook Sports Core, in the dual against Circle and Wisconsin-Parkside. The record was set in the rain on a wet, muddy course, and was broken several weeks later by the first 40 runners at the State Championships, including Rorem.

• Joe Sheeran set a course record at Indiana State (25:28 for a hilly 5 miles), and a total of 13 runners, including nine Panthers, broke the old course record. In addition to Sheeran, Casey Reinking, Reo Rorem, Bill Bandy, John Christy, Larry Schuldt, Bill James, John McInerney and John Dickey shattered the old course mark of 26:40.

• Joe Sheeran set a four-mile course record of 18:58.3 at Wisconsin, breaking the 1975 record of 19:24. In addition to Joe, three Wisconsin runners broke the old course record, and John Christy (19:27) and Casey Reinking (19:28) were close to it.

• Eastern averaged 17.3 points per dual meet in 1977 (15 points being a perfect score), with a record of 10-1. Four of the victories were shutouts, and the Panthers scored only 15 points in five victories.

• Eastern's loss to Wisconsin, 27-29, was its only dual loss in 1977, suffered on Wisconsin's course in a shortened 4 mile race. Wisconsin went on to win the Big Ten title and finish 6th in the Division I National Championships.

The Notre Dame Invitational...

• Eastern became the first non-Division I team in meet history to win the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational, beating 13 Division I schools and nosing out defending Big Ten Champion Michigan by 12 points. All seven runners finished in the top one-third of the field.

• "Since I've been at Eastern I don't think a total seven man team has better for a 24 minute period."...... Coach Tom Woodall, after Eastern's victory at Notre Dame Invitational (Eastern News, October 10, 1977)

The Illinois Intercollegiates...

• "That's going to be an interesting confrontation. I think this is the first time we've gone into the intercollegiate worrying about anybody other than Southern Illinois.".....coach Gary Wieneke, University of Illinois cross country coach, commenting after Eastern's victory at Notre Dame (Peoria Journal Star, prior to October 22 Illinois Intercollegiate Championships).

• Eastern's top three runners finished 2-3-4 in the State Championships (Sheeran, Reinking, Christy).

The NCAA II Championships...

• Since the first rankings in early October, Eastern had been ranked first in the nation in the NCAA Division II Cross Country poll.

• "Everybody says that cross country is an individual sport, but it's really not. It's the team that makes you. Without the rest of the team, I wouldn't be near where I am now." • ...... John Christy, team captain, quoted in the Eastern News, prior to the NCAA II Championships.

• "You could take any one runner away from us, and we would have won everything except the Notre Dame meet."...... Coach Tom Woodall, commenting on the team's depth (Eastern News, Friday, November 11, 1977).

• There isn't going to be any runaways, I know that much.....we'll have to have five guys in the top 25 if we want to win the thing....We're going to have to have five All-Americans and I think we're very capable of that."....Coach Tom Woodall, commenting on the upcoming NCAA II Championships (Eastern News, Friday, November 11, 1977).

• Eastern Illinois was the first team in NCAA history to have six All-Americans in a NCAA Championship (Joe Sheeran, Casey Reinking, John Christy, John McInerney, Duncan McHugh and Bill Bandy).

• Eastern's victory margin (124 points) was the second-largest in meet history, and their score (37 points) was the second-lowest in meet history. The Panther's victory margin was so large, they would have won even without their top two finishers (Sheeran-2nd and Reinking-5th).

• Joe Sheeran's second place finish was the highest finish ever in the NCAA II Championships by an Eastern runner.

• The 1977 Championship was the third NCAA II Cross Country title won by Eastern Illinois (following National Championships in 1968 and 1969). In the last 10 years, beginning in 1968, the Panthers had finished among the top three teams in the nation seven times (three NCAA II titles and four 3rd place finishes).

After the National title...

• Coach Tom Woodall was named NCAA II Cross Country Coach of the Year by the NCAA Div. II Cross Country Coaches Association, his second such award in three years.

• Joe Sheeran finished 18th in the nation (10th American) at the NCAA I National Cross Country Championships in Pullman, Washington, becoming the first NCAA I Cross Country All-American in Eastern Illinois history. Casey Reinking also competed, finishing 128th.

1977 Eastern Illinois University Cross Country Team Summary

In 1977, the Panthers competed against more than 90 different colleges and universities across the United States (many of whom earned national recognition). Only two teams beat the Panthers. Illinois, who later tied for 2nd in the Big 10, nipped Eastern by 7 points in the State Championships. Big 10 Champs Wisconsin squeaked a 2 point dual victory against the Big Blue of EIU. Wisconsin later finished 6th in NCAA Division I Championships. The Panther upset win in the Notre Dame Invitational was surpassed only by the near-record 37 point NCAA Division II Championship total. Six Panthers (Joe Sheeran, Casey Reinking, John Christy, John McInerney, Duncan McHugh and Bill Bandy) were in the top 24 places thereby becoming the first team in meet history to have six All-Americans in the same race. One week later, Joe Sheeran, runner-up in the Division II race, placed 18th (10th American) in the NCAA Division I Nationals in Spokane, Washington. Fellow coaches voted Tom Woodall as National NCAA Division II Cross Country Coach of the Year for the second time in the past three years.
