It argues that these media can potentially enable subcultures to challenge, and possibly overthrow, hegemonic power structures that maintain the dominance of a mainstream culture. I trace the meme from its creation by Matt Furie in 2005 to its appearance in the 2016 US Presidential Election and examine how its meaning has changed throughout its history. I define the difference between a meme instance and the meme as a whole, and conclude that the meaning of the overall meme is formed by the sum of its numerous meme instances. This structure is unique to the medium of Internet memes and is what enables subcultures to use them to easily transfer ideologies in order to challenge the hegemony of dominant cultures. Dick Hebdige provides a model by which a dominant culture can reclaim the images and symbols used by a subculture through the process of commodification.

Overall consumption of album sales, song sales and audio on-demand streaming volume is up 5% over 2015, fueled by an incredible 203% increase in on-demand audio streams, enough to offset declines in sales and return a positive year for the business. 2016 also marked the highest vinyl sales total to date. It was an incredible year for Canadian artists, at home and abroad. Eight different Canadian artists had #1 albums in 2016, led by Drake whose album Views was the biggest album of the year in Canada as well as the U.S. The Tragically Hip had two albums reach the top of the chart as well, their latest release and their 2005 best of album, and their emotional farewell concert in August was something we’ll remember for a long time. Justin Bieber, Billy Talent, Céline Dion, Shawn Mendes, Leonard Cohen and The Weeknd also spent time at #1. Open the Pdf, on the top you have a menu, click on “Edit” and select “Find” for a word in this Pdf. Click on next to see the next place in that Pdf. 2. Searching in one or more Pdf’s. Open one Pdf, click on “Edit”, go to “Advanced search” A window will open. Make your choice “current document” or “All Pdf documents in” If you made the choice “All documents in”, click on the arrow right on the bar below it. There you can look for the place on your computer where you have the Pdf-Folder. If you don’t see the folder click on “Browse for location” and find the folder on your computer, then click on it once. This is the place where the search will be done.

  • Montreal Poet Seymour Mayne Remembers His Friend Leonard Cohen
    BY SEYMOUR MAYNE Leonard was holding court at the front table unit of the café on upper Stanley Street one Sunday in 1960, when our mutual friend, the poet Henry Moscovitch, ushered me forward to meet him. He was twenty-six that spring, the lion of the McGill University arts crowd, and I was a high school student aged sixteen. I had just entered the Canadian literary world, small as it was then, having published several poems in The Canadian Forum. THE The first sight of the debonair figure, with two beautiful young women who flanked him on his left and right side, remains framed in my memory. He must have said something encouraging to me. And that is how our long friendship began. As he grew older, the strength of affection and respect he inspired in his old Montreal friends increased in depth and intensity. When he left us this November, he was still that gracious Davidic figure. How Jewish was Leonard Cohen? He had no way not to be, born into the unique Montreal Jewish community, sandwiched as it was between the French-speaking working-class quartiers to the east and the English- speaking middle-class suburbs to the west. While Yiddish was the first language of many Jewish immigrants in the SEYMOUR MAYNE MAYNE SEYMOUR working-class neighbourhoods of Montreal, it did not have the same currency among the wealthier members Montreal poet Seymour Mayne of the community. Leonard’s home was not suffused with the expressive language. At school he studied mainly BET in English, with French added as a second language.

[email protected] Abstract This work tries to show the repercussion and diffusion of the political illustrations of the American cartoonist Ben Garrison on the Internet as an example of a right-wing activism carried out from a traditional technique, the editorial cartoon, in a current medium, the Internet. With all this, the objective is to demonstrate, from this specific case, the benefits and harms of freedom of expression in the net, as well as the power of metaphorizing emotions to build virtual communities. When addressing this writing, first of all, the motivations of its beginning as an independent political cartoonist are explained; secondly, the reasons for the viralization of his work are established; and finally, the reception of his cartoons from two sides is compared. On the one hand, the reproduction and defense of his work from the US nationalpopulist movement in social networks and alternative pro-Trump digital newspapers.
