  • Cherub at Christmas
CHERUB AT CHRISTMAS ROBERT MUCHAMORE 1 The following events take place on December 24th 2004, in-between CHERUB: Class A and CHERUB: Maximum Security. 2 1. THE OLD NEIGHBOURHOOD Friday December 24th 2004, 10:37a.m. James knew exactly what he'd see as he turned the corner into Holloway Villas: six-storey housing blocks, built around a courtyard, with a vandalised playground in the centre and the stench of rubbish as you walked past by the giant steel bins. The only thing James didn't recognise was the graffiti. PIG41 was the new spray can supremo on James' old estate. His bright red tag adorned walls, doors, billboards and even the pavement itself. ‘You OK, James?' Bruce asked as the two boys walked side by side. ‘Yeah,' James said, swallowing a lump in his throat. But he wasn't OK. Memories of the night when his mother died fourteen months earlier still had the power to sting. Bruce handed James a tissue. ‘It's a bit crumpled, but there's no snot on it.' ‘Ta,' James said, feeling a little embarrassed as he took it and rubbed his eyes. ‘I don't know … I mean … I just remembered the ambulance men carrying my mum out and Lauren holding my wrist. It all came flooding back.' 3 ‘Nothing to be ashamed of,' Bruce said. ‘Nobody's gonna get over their mum dying in any sort of hurry.' The boys headed up a concrete staircase. A bitter gust of wind hit them as they stepped out on to the second-floor balcony.

  • The Chairman Are All Set in October 2031, a Few Weeks Before James’ Fortieth Birthday, but Each One Shows James’ Life Taking a Radically Different Path
1 CHERUB: 3 FUTURES To celebrate the May 2011 launch of the CHERUB: Shadow Wave paperback Robert Muchamore has written three alternative futures for James Adams, the hero of CHERUB: Series One. The Playboy, The Family Man and The Chairman are all set in October 2031, a few weeks before James’ fortieth birthday, but each one shows James’ life taking a radically different path. NOTE ON CHARACTER NAMES: Most CHERUB agents change their names when they retire, but for simplicity their original CHERUB-era names have been used in this story. 2 CHERUB: THE CHAIRMAN October 2013 – No 10 Downing Street James Adams tipped his armchair back and stared at the portraits on the wall. He recognised Winston Churchill, but he’d never paid much attention in history class at school so he didn’t know any of the other historic figures who were glaring at him. He’d been waiting for long enough to know every detail of the room. He’d drunk two cups of black tea because he couldn’t figure out how to work the milk dispenser and didn’t want to splash his best suit. He’d also eaten two iced fancies and a mini scone off the cake stand and grown fond of the way his well-polished shoe left an impression every time he pulled it out of the ultra-thick carpet. James’ thirteen-year-old middle daughter Sarah had polished the shoes before school. She was the only one of James’ three daughters who still lived at home, because fifteen-year-old Ellen was a qualified CHERUB agent who preferred to live amongst her friends on campus, and eleven-year-old Gwen had just begun her second attempt at CHERUB basic training.

  • Year 9 Reading List
YEAR NINE READING IDEAS Holes Louis Sachar Stanley Yelnats is under a curse that began with his great-great-grandfather. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys’ detention centre, Camp Green Lake, where the boys build character by spending all day, every day digging holes exactly five feet wide and five feet deep. It doesn’t take long for Stanley to realize that the boys are digging holes because the warden is looking for something. What could be buried under a dried-up lake? Stanley tries to dig up the truth in this inventive and darkly humorous tale of crime and punishment— and redemption. A fantastic read. Truly gripping. Sensitive, plot driven, strong characters. Madame Doubtfire Anne Fine Many people will recognise this title from the film, Mrs Doubtfire. Lydia, Christopher and Natalie are used to domestic turmoil as their parents' divorce has not made family life any easier in either home. The children bounce to and from their volatile mother, Miranda, and their out-of-work actor father, Daniel. Then Miranda advertises for a cleaning lady who will look mind the children after work - and Daniel gets the job, disguised as Madame Doubtfire. Poignant, funny and thought provoking. Homecoming Cynthia Voigt All of Cynthia Voigt's Tillerman family novels deal with people who don't fit into mainstream society. “Homecoming” is about thirteen-year-old Dicey Tillerman, her younger brothers James and Sammy, and her younger sister Maybeth who live with their mother in an old, run-down shack by the ocean. Their father's been gone for years, and money's always been tight.
