Although a work of fiction, I’ve drawn on many of my parents’ and grandparents’ stories of their lives in Bermondsey. My grandmother started work as a teenager in Pearce Duffs custard factory before World War I and worked there for most of her life. Reading about / MARY GIBSON MARY the Bermondsey women’s strike of 1911 gave me the starting point for the story and the ending was inspired by my grandfather’s experiences during World War I. It seems fitting that the story of the custard tarts and their men who marched away will be published during the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War. MARY GIBSON Heartwarming and gritty, the life and loves of a factory girl in Bermondsey through World War 1. Nellie Clark is a custard tart – a factory girl packing custard powder in London’s east end. Conditions are poor, and srikes are frequent. Nellie must support her family after her mother’s death – often going hungry to feed her little brothers. Two men vie for Nellie’s love. One is flamboyant, confident and a chancer. The other is steady, truthful and loyal. But the choice is not as easy as it might seem. Looming over them all – over Bermondsey, over the factory, over the custard tarts and their lives and loves – is the shadow of the First World War. And that will change everything and everyone. MARY GIBSON grew up in Bermondsey, where both her grandmother and great aunt worked in the Pearce Duff factory. This is her first novel. 02 JANUARY 2014 Fiction/Saga * 228x145 mm * 416 pages E 9781781855751 * FTP 9781781855782 £12.99 Territories: WORLD XUSA * Rights: Audio, Large Print ‘With Jay, there are no sacred cows, no punches pulled 5 and no laugh left on the cutting room floor. PEGASUS BOOKS FALL 2019 PEGASUS BOOKS FALL 2019 NEW HARDCOVERS THE KING’S WAR The Friendship of George VI and Lionel Logue During World War II Peter Conradi and Mark Logue Following the New York Times bestselling The King’s Speech, this eagerly anticipated sequel takes King George VI and his speech therapist Lionel Logue into the darkest days of World War II. The broadcast that George VI made to the British nation on the outbreak of war in September 1939—which formed the climax of the multi-Oscar-winning film The King’s Speech—was the product of years of hard work with Lionel Logue, his iconoclastic, Australian- born speech therapist. Yet the relationship between the two men did not end there. Far from it: in the years that followed, Logue was to play an even more important role at the monarch’s side. The King’s War follows that relationship through the dangerous days of Dunkirk and the drama of D-Day to eventual victory in 1945—and beyond. Like the first book, it is written by Peter Con- radi, a London Sunday Times journalist, and Mark Logue, Lionel’s grandson, and again draws on exclusive material from the Logue Archive—the collection of diaries, letters, and other documents left by Lionel and his feisty wife, Myrtle. This gripping narrative provides a fascinating portrait of two men and their respective families—the Windsors and the Logues—as they together face the greatest chal- lenge in Britain’s history. PETER CONRADI is an journalist with the London Sunday Times.

  • Spring/Summer 2021
AND OTHER STORIES Spring/Summer 2021 We started publishing in September 2011. Many of the most brilliant, engaging and artistically innovative authors weren’t finding publishers back in the post-2008 Credit Crunch, so off we went. Today the books in this catalogue represent the home stretch as we approach our tenth anniversary. And again, as larger publishers look fearfully at a difficult few years ahead and show every sign of once more losing their nerve on literature, we say: it’s time. We’d better step up. And we’re thinking about the future in more ways than one. We’ve always been concerned about our ecological impact, and we’ve tried to lead in our own small way, but recently we’ve come to terms with the fact that our efforts weren’t enough. In autumn 2020, we experimented with not using matt laminates on our paperbacks’ covers, out of a wish to cut out plastics from our books as completely as from our packaging, but we realised it meant we had many more damaged books that no one wanted. It had been a knee-jerk reaction, but probably not the right one. Ecological issues are complex and I’m strongly involved in groups in the arts and publishing, e.g. the Publishers Association’s Sustainability Taskforce, that are working to widen industry access to environmental knowledge. We’ll continue to look at our books’ production; we need to do so much more, both us the press and us the industry. In 2019, we also started to ask festivals and shops if our international authors could appear on a giant screen at their (live) events, rather than be flown there, to cut carbon emissions.

Fatine Bahar Karlidag Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Dr. Stefka Mihaylova School of Drama Based on archival research, recent Joan Littlewood centenary events and contemporary scholarship on the Theatre Workshop of Joan Littlewood and Ewan MacColl, this dissertation proposes to take sides with the radical class politics of the Old Left, or Communism, to read the legacy of MacColl-Littlewood collaboration in theatre, and its continuing impacts on Littlewood’s post-theatrical work in the 1960s’ New Left. This is to demystify the ‘genius’ aura bestowed upon Joan Littlewood; to re-instate Ewan MacColl’s contribution to the legacy of this ground-breaking theatre famously known as that which revolutionized the West End; to retrofit Theatre Workshop as a sample ensemble of the larger frame of the radical left-wing interwar theatres while acknowledging the independent evolution of their work into 1950s, and to further complicate the thematically and textually oriented analytical narratives’ efforts to analyze Theatre Workshop productions.
