This review describes the pattern and level of landings during the period
1971 through 1977 in the nine Western European countries which occupy an important
place as producers and exporters of fish and fishery products. It is hoped that
an overview of catches during this period will provide some insight with re-
gard to their production and export potential during the eighties.
As there is a .wide range of species of fish and shellfish, it was felt
that in order to provide a more complete supply picture, given the possibility
of substitution, the species with landings of 1,000 metric tons or over in any given year during the period under review ( 1971 - 1977) must be included.
The tables in the appendix provide more detailed information on catches . for the selected species.
WESTERN EUROPE
In 1977, the nominal catch of fish and shellfish in the nine Western
Eroupean countries amounted to nearly 7.5 million metric tons. Some Western
European countries experienced declines in their landings while the catch in ochers showed a substantial improvement compared to the previous year. The level of landings in a few countries remained more or less the same as in 1976. - 2 -
Among the Western European countries, Norway is the most inportant
harvester of fish. It accounted for nearly 48 per cent of the combined total nominal catch of the nine countries. Spain was in second place with 20 per cent , of the total nominal catch. Iceland with its catch of nearly 1.4 million tons
occupied third position. Its share of the total nominal catch amounted to over
18 per cent. These three countries combined accounted for 86 per cent of the total landings in the selected Western European countries.
