INSIDE: CANDIDATES COMPARED ALL MAJOR THE POWER OF BIBLICAL CITIZENSHIP HONORING GOD WITH YOUR VOTE IN 2020 Get the Guide online at mnfamilyvoter.com INTRODUCTION We’re called to exercise citizenship worthy of the gospel of Christ (Philippians 1:27). We live in a country where God has entrusted us with the responsibility of choosing our leaders, so part of “citizenship worthy of the gospel” is learning how the Bible informs our vote. We know that’s what would honor God, and yet it’s not easy. Often churches and Christians have forsaken the hard choices involved in voting and instead decided to follow one party or one leader without question – or they’ve simply stayed home on election day. In our ultra-polarized culture, that often seems like the easiest option. Everyone on the ballot this year is flawed, just like the rest of us. But skipping this election is not the answer. This guide will help you see where candidates stand on some of the issues that are most important to many Christians. The answers aren’t always simple, but our goal is to help you and your family honor God with your votes this election. Working with churches across the state, we’ve concluded that the following issues, though certainly not the only issues at stake in this election, are particularly important for Christians to think about as we prayerfully make a decision this fall. Vote Early By Mail This fall, many Minnesotans will be voting by mail. That’s why we’re including an absentee ballot application, which you can fill out and mail in to receive an absentee ballot when General Election ballots become available. For your ballot to count, remember this important information: • Read the instructions that come with your ballot carefully. • Your signature envelope might have a box for a witness to complete and sign. Due to COVID-19, there is no witness requirement for registered voters for the November 3, 2020 General Election. Non-registered voters will still need a witness to indicate their proof of residence. • Mail the ballot and forms back right away after you finish. Your returned ballot must be postmarked on or before Election Day (November 3, 2020) and received by your county within the next seven calendar days (November 10). You may also drop off your ballot envelope in person. See details at https://www.sos.state.mn.us/elections-voting/other-ways-to-vote/vote-early-by-mail/. You can also request an absentee ballot online at: https://mnvotes.sos.state.mn.us/ABRegistration/ABRegistrationStep1.aspx. So we’re calling on elected leaders to support efforts to ban the dangerous and medically inappropriate procedure known as “gender reassignment surgery” for minors, and to oppose this ideology in school curricula and athletics. SCHOOL CHOICE Parents need to be able to make the right choices for their children’s education. We are asking candidates to commit to making this easier for all Minnesota families by making tuition tax credits available to families who need them. RELIGIOUS FREEDOM We believe that elected leaders must pledge to protect religious freedom so that we can “live peaceably with all” (Romans 12:18). ISSUES FOR FEDERAL CANDIDATES CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM We believe God’s Word is clear on this issue. Punishments for criminals must be proportional to the crime and justly administered (Exodus 21:23-25). Elected officials must work to end draconian sentencing rules and racism in our criminal justice system. We will ask every candidate for federal office to support criminal justice reform. FIXING OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM We believe elected leaders must acknowledge that good rulers secure their borders (Psalm 147:14) while recognizing that showing mercy to genuine refugees is part of our calling as Christians - that when we welcome a stranger, we are welcoming Christ (Matthew 25:31-40). For these reasons, we are asking candidates for federal office to answer three questions on how they would fix our broken immigration system.
