The fifty songs in Choose Christ quickly became a popular supplement to the hymnals and missals of parishes throughout the country. By 2009, it was clear that demand for supplemental contemporary liturgical music exceeded those original 50 songs. OCP responded by reformulating Choose Christ into an annual publication, and added an additional 60 songs. Each subsequent year Choose Christ added a dozen more new songs, reaching over 250 by the 2019 edition. In the fifteen years of Choose Christ’s history, the embrace of liturgical music modeled on modern musical styles has continued to grow, as has the expertise of the composers of this repertoire. Now, responding to the demand for quality liturgical music in contemporary styles, and recognizing its increasingly central role in the music programs of many parishes, OCP has once again reformulated Choose Christ. This comprehensive missal is suitable as the primary musical worship resource for parish liturgies. In the tradition of OCP’s annual missal publications, the Choose Christ Missal offers a balanced repertoire of both new and well-known Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Our editors worked diligently to select from among the two decades of Spirit & Song repertoire, from the treasury of songs written since the Second Vatican Council, and from the evangelism-centered repertoire of modern worship songs, combined with contemporary arrangements of hymns, carols and chants. Added to this music repertoire are the Order of Mass with musical settings of the Mass ordinaries, full Lectionary readings from the Sunday cycle, ritual and devotional prayers, and Psalm and Gospel Acclamation settings from OCP’s annual Spirit & Psalm resource. The pew edition of the Choose Christ Missal is of course supported by complete accompaniment books for both guitar and piano, available loose-leaf with attractive binders and in PDF format for tablets. The popular Spirit & Psalm annual resource of responsorial Psalms and Gospel Acclamations may be purchased as needed for ensembles to support the singing of Psalms and acclamations found in the front of the Choose Christ Missal. Continuing OCP’s tradition of excellent customer support, complimentary copies of the accompaniment books, Spirit & Psalm, and other materials are included with purchases of 50 or more copies of the pew edition of the Choose Christ Missal. As Pope Francis reminds us, “It is necessary to ensure that sacred music…be fully ‘inculturated’ in the artistic and musical language of the current time; namely, that [we] are able to incarnate and translate the Word of God into song, sound and harmony capable of making the hearts of our contemporaries resonate…” (March 4, 2017; on the 50th anniversary of Musicam Sacram). The goal of the Choose Christ Missal is just that: to provide contemporary music that incarnates the Word of God, makes hearts resonate, and stirs full participation in the Eucharist. Our hope and prayer is that it will help lead your community to a deeper encounter with God in the sacred liturgy. • “Spreading Your Wings”
“Spreading Your Wings” Baccalaureate Mass at Our Lady of Czestochowa Shrine (Doylestown, PA) 2 June 2007 I’m honored to be with you today to share in your Baccalaureate & Graduation, and I thank you for the invitation. It’s been thirty years since I took part in one of these, but if I remember correctly, there should be a few parties on this occasion! And that reminds me of a graduation story from California. There a young Valley girl was cruising along the coast in her convertible after her party. She came to a sharp curve which she couldn’t negotiate, and went flying off the side. As the convertible plummeted below her, she managed to reach out and grab onto a single branch extending from the rocks. Immediately she screamed, “help!” But no response. “Help,” she cried again, but there was silence on the lonely road above. Finally, she yelled out, “can anybody hear me?” And a voice from the clouds answered, “Yes.” “Can you help me?” she yelled back. “Of course I can ... I’m God” the voice bellowed. “So, just let go.” A minute or two went by, and the girl looked up and yelled ... “can anybody else hear me?” Now I know that scenario is unlikely to play out for any of you who are very soon-to-be high school graduates, and not just because I assume you are more sensible drivers. Rather, it’s because today you are “spreading your wings” ... so you could fly. I’m intrigued by this as your choice of a theme for this day and so I’d like to explore with you this idea of “spreading our wings.” Don’t worry, this won’t be a full-fledged lesson in aviation.
