Fairy Tales: The Three Little

And he tried and he tried. He huffed and he puffed, and he huffed and he puffed, but he couldn’t blow the pig’s brick house down. “Little pig, little pig, I’m coming down your chimney right now to get you,” bellowed the big bad wolf. “Please yourself,” called the third little pig who was now busy with some important preparations. “Little pig, little pig, I have my front paws down your chimney,” threatened the big bad wolf. “Please yourself,” called the little pig who was still busy. “Little pig, little pig, I have my bushy tail down your chimney,” called the wolf. “Please yourself,” called the third little pig 6

That clever little pig had placed the pot on the fire, right under the chimney. The wolf splished and splashed, and scrambled out of the big pot. He ran as fast as he could out of the front door, and was never, ever seen again. The third little pig went to look for his two brothers and found them safe and sound. So the three little pigs went and fetched their mother. And now they all live happily together in the brick house.

Gladwin Elementary Specials (Art, Music, Physical Education, & Science)

Art: For this week we will be creating modeling clay, which is much like play dough! This is one of the class choices during early finisher stations in Art. There are so many kids who love working with our classroom clay. The ingredients to make it are items that should be around the house. Many of you may have even made it a time or two. It is a fun way to be creative with 3-D forms and it is great for sensory work as well.

Materials: -4 cups of flour -1 cup of warm water -food coloring (if you do not have this, it is okay your clay will just look like bread dough) -2 tbsp. of canola or vegetable oil -1 ½ cups of salt -zip lock bag or saran wrap to put finished clay in

This recipe will make a nice amount of clay. The first thing to do is to get four separate bowls ready. They can be the size of a cereal bowl. You will then divide the water into each cup. This will equate to ¼ cup of water to each bowl. The next thing you will do is add about 4-5 drops of food coloring to each bowl. If you have 4 colors, make 4 different colors of clay. *See below color mixing guide if you want to make another color than what you have. Also remember that if you do not have food coloring, that is quite alright! Next, you will add ½ table spoon of oil to each bowl. Then mix each bowl well. In a DIFFERENT bowl, a bit larger than a cereal bowl, you will mix the dry ingredients together. Put the 4 cups of flour and the 1 ½ cups of salt in the new bowl and then give it a good mixing. Now it is time to add 1 cup of the flour/salt mixture to each of the original four bowls. Once the flour is dispersed evenly, you will begin the process of mixing each bowl until a soft dough ball forms. When the ingredients are mixed together, you will lightly sprinkle additional flour to your table and roll the clay around kneading the dough until a nice smooth clay ball is formed. To store, get either a ziploc bag or saran wrap and place each clay ball into the bag. Make sure all the air is out and stored in the fridge when not in use, this will make the clay last longer. Music: This week we are going to explore high and low pitches. This is different from sound volume. You will need different sized objects like different sized glasses, or plastic pop bottles or tin cans. You can also use different sized pots and pans. Try to have your objects be made of the same material, such as all plastic or all metal. You will also need something to tap them with like a wooden or metal spoon. Arrange the objects from left to right, from largest to smallest. Tap each one gently and notice the sound each one makes. 1. Do small objects have a high or low pitch? 2. Do large objects have a high or low pitch? 3. What happens to pitch when you go from larger object to smaller object? 4. See if you can make a simple song using these objects. Suggestions: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, This Old Man, Mary Had a Little Lamb. You can also make up your own song.

Fun Fitness Activities

Make an obstacle course: Using couch cushions, pots and pans, and plenty of other household objects, construct an engaging and challenging obstacle course. Kids can climb under blankets stretched between the couch and coffee table, or they can somersault across the living room. Take this kind of play outside if you want more room to move around.

Clean-up race: What could be better than fun exercises for kids that benefit both their bodies and your house? Pick a room or assign the whole house and see which kid can clean up the most. This exercise is practical enough that you could employ a “clean-up race” in your kids’ rooms every day.

Jumping jacks and heart activity: Do 25 jumping jacks and find your heartbeat in your neck or wrist after you have finished. Count the number of beats that you feel for one minute.
