The Fourth Sunday of Advent The Fourth Sunday of Advent 22nd December, 2019 Welcome On behalf of everyone at St. John’s, Toorak, a very warm welcome to this church and faith community. St. John’s welcomes everyone to all services and events, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, race or background. This is a wonderful and historic church, founded in 1859, and celebrating our 160th anniversary this year! We are part of the Anglican Church of Australia and a member of the global Anglican Communion, comprised of 80 million people. Regular services of worship are held each Sunday at 8am and 10am, and Wednesday at 7pm. All are welcome. Services are followed by times of fellowship over food and drinks to which everyone is also welcome. This church actively follows Jesus’ command to love God, love one’s neighbour and to care for all people. Our clergy and parishioners regularly visit the sick, home-bound, and the dying. We care for the poor and needy through service and charitable giving, through our Opportunity Shop run in partnership with the local Catholic and Uniting churches, and by supporting the work of Anglicare, The Brotherhood of St. Laurence and The Anglican Board of Mission. Our clergy regularly baptise new members of the church, preside at weddings and care for the grieving through our funeral ministry. If we can be of service to you or your family, please do not hesitate to get in touch. If you would like to give of your time and talents in the service of others, please also contact the church and we will gladly welcome your contribution. The 10am service begins with the processional hymn 271. ​ INTRODUCTORY RITE The Fourth Candle on the Advent Wreath is lit, using the following prayer Blessed are you, sovereign Lord, merciful and gentle: to you be praise and glory for ever. Your light has shone in our darkened world through the child-bearing of blessed Mary; grant that we who have seen your glory may daily be renewed in your image and prepared like her for the coming of your Son, who is the Lord and Saviour of all. Amen. ​ The Lord be with you. And also with you. ​ Hymn 271 ‘The advent of our God’ At 8am only verses 1 & 2 are sung ​ ​ ​ The Collect for Purity said together ​ Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord.     MEDIA RELEASE 10 February 2018 ANGLICANS WELCOME NEW ARCHBISHOP KAY GOLDSWORTHY AO The Right Reverend Goldsworthy AO, is today (Saturday 10 February) being installed as the eighth Archbishop of Perth, and Metropolitan of the Province of Western Australia, signaling a historic moment for the Anglican Church as the first woman in Australia and the worldwide Anglican Communion, elected to the role. Archbishop Goldsworthy’s installation service at St George’s Cathedral followed an extensive eight- month selection process that was announced in August last year. Anglican Primate, Archbishop Philip Freier has warmly welcomed the new Archbishop to the role. “Bishop Kay Goldsworthy continues her pioneering series of appointments as the first woman to be appointed an Archbishop in the Anglican Communion,” Archbishop Freier said. “She will bring her distinct gifts to bear upon this important role and goes to it with my support and encouragement.” The Right Reverend Kate Wilmot, from the Anglican Diocese of Perth, said the installation is an exciting moment for the church. “The installation of a new Archbishop is always a memorable and historic occasion, but we are also conscious that this is the first time an Australian Archbishop has been a woman. “Bishop Kay Goldsworthy knows Perth well but has also had experience in other Australian dioceses, has ministered for more than three decades in three dioceses and brings wisdom and an ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse members of the church community. “Bishop Kay has a long history of service to this diocese, and is an experienced church leader, having spent a decade in episcopal ministry.

    Partners Praying Together EACH DAY THIS MONTH ABM Prayer Theme: Give thanks for Wontulp-Bi-Buya College in Cairns. The college supports the development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander church and community leaders through study programs leading to awards in theology, suicide prevention, addictions management and community development. Pray for the Rev Victor Joseph, the college’s Principal, for the staff who teach, and the students who learn. Friday 1 November – All Saints’ Day ABM Prayer for the Day: Give thanks for the General Community Development Fund, and for those who support it. The fund allows ABM to continue to measure and evaluate our effectiveness in the aid projects we deliver, enabling us to learn from and improve the work we do. It means we can support the Anglican Communion to amplify the voices of smaller churches around the world, especially in the Pacific region, in advocacy on climate change, prevention of violence against women, and ending human trafficking and slavery. It allows us to support the ecumenical work of the Church Agencies Network which works to prevent, mitigate or effectively respond to disasters in our region, and to support the ecumenical work of Action by Churches Together in responding to disasters across the world.
