SOCIO-ECONOMIC CONDITIONS OF FLOOD AFFECTED PEOPLE IN

ABSTRACT

The study examined the impact of floods on the socio- economic conditions of flood affected people of , Urngattiri grama panchayath in . The aim of this study is to understanding of the impact of floods on the socio-economic livelihoods and underlying causes of the Thottumukkam, Urngattiri gramapanchayath`s vulnerability. To analyse damage to property and destriction of environment. To identify the impact on their life and work, family structures on authority, Religious and Tribal factors and also we just focusing in analysis of government policies.

The importance of study in mainly the issue of water pollution of the river due to floods, increases the health risk. Accessibility to health service was a problem due to infrastructure (roads& bridges) damage as discussed under the heath section.

INTRODUCTION

The flood on 16 August 2018, Kerala`s economy and human life too have been affected. It affected all sectors of the Kerala economy. During the month of August 2018, the entire state of Kerala was in the grip of a massive unprecedented flood: the last time anything like this happened was in 1924 and very heavy floods in almost all rivers of Kerala. Heavy losses to life, property and crops etc. This will further affect the living and working conditions of people living and working conditions of people living in these areas.

According to Kerala government, one-sixth of the total population of Kerala had been directly affected by the floods and related incidents.

According to official figures, about 483 lives have been lost and around 140 people went missing .with over 250000 homeless over 80000 relief campus opened. The economy of Kerala suffered from a loss of about rupees 2000 core. The social-economic impacts are experienced by different people in different ways.

The paper aims at assessing the impact of floods on the socio-economic conditions of flood affected people.

OBJECTIVES

1) To analyze impact of socio-economic conditions of affected people. 2) To analyze relief fund from government

METHODOLOGY

The study area is Urangattirigrama panchayat. Both primary and secondary data is being collected for data analysis primary data has been collected from the people of grama panchayath by a questionnaire. The data collected was analyzed through Graph, tables. Secondary data collected Agricultural office.

STUDY AREA

The Urangattiri village is located in the Malappuram District. The geographical area in which this village is expanded in 2809 hectares /28.09 Square kilometers(km^2) 6941.1901654128 acres.

HOW ARE PEOPLE AFFECTED BY FLOOD?

Flooding affects people in a multitude of ways. People suffer stress on multiple fronts, not just as flooding occurs, but also in the anticipatory period preceding a flood and during the cleanup and recovery phase. Flooding can damage properties, destroy homes, create financial burden and cause emotional hardship.

 Physical property.  Financial burden.  Agricultural effects.  Emotional effects.

Physical property

Flood damage property. Flood water damaged many things in Urangattiri Grama panchayath especially physical properties like houses, vehicle, Land. And it also created many health and diseases. Urangattiri Grama Panchayath consists of 10000 houses, 34 houses completely destroyed and 450 houses were partially damaged. Panchayath approved 409 applications and rejected 75 applications. Second ward is highly effected.

Financial burden

Some insurance companies will cover damages caused by flooding, but others will not. The flood have led to loss of human life, destruction of social and economic infrastructure. Even schools and other educational institutes have been affected. Around five educational institutions were partially damaged. Roads and bridge were damaged, it leads to financial burden.

Agricultural effects

In Urangatttiri grama panchayath, more people engaged in Agricultural sector. So agricultural sector play a vital role. People who mainly interested too cultivated banana, arecanutpalm, coconut, rubber, pepper, ginger, coco etc. compare with other crops banana is must cultivated crops, then and pepper. According to official data agricultural sector faced around 2.5 crore loss. But according to unofficial figures, more than 3crores were lost. Government approved 7256308 lakh.

In agricultural sector banana cultivation was the highest losses.

Emotional effects

People affected by flooding may experience a range of emotions, including anxiety, fear, anger, frustration, sadness and grief. It is natural for people who experience traumatic events, such as flooding, to experience difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, depressed or angry moods and heightened feelings of anxiety. Often mental health professionals are made available by organizations planning for disaster response, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The landslide occurred on the night of August 8 at the Urngattiri grama panchayath. Landslide happened in many places Odakkayam, ,paragimala etc. The first relief camp opened at odakkayam G.U.P School. There reported active participation of appropriate authorities and clubs (president, revenue officers, NSS Students, Army and Police). 9 people were reported missing in the landslide. 7 people died and 2 people escaped with injuries.

Health department handled the situation in where reported health related problems.

FINDINGS

 Compare with other sector Agricultural sector faced heavy loss. Flood adversely affected Agricultural and ancillary activities. Especially in banana cultivation.

 In Agricultural sector faced around 3 crore loss.

 The government could not cover all victims of floods.

 The flood mainly created like,causes outages, disrupt transportation, damage buildings and create landslides.

 In study area reported infectious diseases.

 People suffered transportation problem in the time of flood.

 34 houses completely destroyed and 450 houses were partially damaged.

 To experience difficulty sleeping loss of appetite, depressed or angry moods and heightened feelings of anxiety.

SUGGESTIONS

 There need appropriate fund distribution to flood victims.

 Provide fund facilities only to eligible persons. That means authorities should closely watch each application.

 The government of Kerala/ must take strong actions to control this kind of natural calamities.

CONCLUSION

Floods are one of the natural disaster that known to have caused by the livelihood of affected people. The most of the flood victims, having gone through serious hardship at their relief camps, felt that life had to continue. They were able to get back to their various houses and start life. While some were able to get back to work quickly, some are still finding it difficult to embark into normal life. The government must take strong action to control this kind of natural calamities.
