In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world. Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped, and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely. But this is the year 1944. Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned. The free men of the world are marching together to victory. I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty, and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory. Good Luck! LONGMONT, Colo. - At 76, former Red Sox outfielder Carroll Hardy is in stellar health, but he knows his obituary is all but set in stone. The only man ever to pinch hit for Ted Williams. “I’m kind of excited by it,’’ says Hardy, a glint in his eye. “I think it’s funny.’’ He’s been described as having the good fortune of Forrest Gump, and for good reason. Hardy also played one year in the NFL and caught four touchdown passes from Hall of Fame quarterback Y.A. Tittle. He pinch hit for a young Yaz and a rookie Roger Maris. He was tutored by the legendary Tris Speaker, coached for the volatile Billy Martin in Triple A Denver, and hit a walkoff grand slam at Fenway Park. He was even responsible for a change in the NFL draft. Hardy was a journeyman outfielder for the Red Sox, Indians, Colt .45s, and Twins who hit just .225 with 17 home runs and 113 RBIs in 433 games over an eight-year major league career.     Collecting Lombardi’s Dominating Packers BY DAVID LEE ince Lombardi called Lambeau Field his “pride and joy.” Specifically, the ground itself—the grass and the dirt. V He loved that field because it was his. He controlled everything that happened there. It was the home where Lombardi built one of the greatest sports dynasties of all-time. Fittingly, Lambeau Field was the setting for the 1967 NFL Champion- ship, famously dubbed “The Ice Bowl” before the game even started. Tem- peratures plummeting to 12 degrees below zero blasted Lombardi’s field. Despite his best efforts using an elaborate underground heating system to keep it from freezing, the field provided the perfect rock-hard setting to cap Green Bay’s decade of dominance—a franchise that bullied the NFL for nine seasons. The messy game came down to a goal line play of inches with 16 seconds left, the Packers trailing the Cowboys 17-14. Running backs were slipping on the ice, and time was running out. So, quarterback Bart Starr called his last timeout, and ran to the sideline to tell Lombardi he wanted to run it in himself. It was a risky all-in gamble on third down. “Well then run it, and let’s get the hell out of here,” Starr said Lom- bardi told him. The famous lunge into the endzone gave the Packers their third-straight NFL title (their fifth in the decade) and a second-straight trip to the Super Bowl to face the AFL’s best. It was the end of Lombardi’s historic run as Green Bay’s coach.

    Name: James Arthur "Art" Monk Years: December 5, 1957 to Present Residence: White Plains, New York Brief Biography: Born in White Plains, Art Monk had a passion for sports and particularly excelled in football while attending White Plains High School. With good grades and the support of his coach, Monk won a full scholarship to Syracuse University. At Syracuse University, Monk was a four-year Orangemen letter winner (1976-79). He led the team in receiving in 1977, 1978 and 1979 and still ranks in the top 10 on several school career record lists, including career receptions (sixth), all-time receiving yards (seventh) and receiving yards per game (ninth). Monk was drafted in the first round of the 1980 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. During his rookie year, Monk was a unanimous All-Rookie selection and set a new Redskins rookie record, with 58 receptions. In 1984, Monk caught an NFL record 106 receptions for a career-best 1,372 yards. He caught eight or more passes in six games, had five games of 100 yards or more, and in a game against the San Francisco 49ers caught ten passes for 200 yards, earning him team MVP honors and his first Pro Bowl selection. Monk went over the 1,000-yard mark in each of the following two seasons, becoming the first Redskins receiver to produce three consecutive 1,000 yard seasons. He also became the first Redskins player to catch 70 or more passes in three consecutive seasons. During Monk's 14 seasons with the Redskins, the team won three Super Bowls (XVII, XXII, and XXVI) and had only three losing seasons.
